Quarterly Newsletter                                                                          December 2013

Greetings!

In the midst of the holiday rush, the Board of Directors and staff of Communities in Schools of Nevada would like to take a moment to express our sincere thanks to our growing list of supporters and partner organizations.

We know that many families in Nevada will struggle to make it through the winter, putting children at risk for giving up on school and their dreams. The generosity of our donors and the dedication of our site coordinators and partner organizations will help create solutions for families and students, giving them hope for a brighter new year.

We thank you for your continued support, and share our best wishes for a happy, healthy holiday season for you and your families.

Sincerely,

null

Harvest For Hope is a Huge Success
Founder Elaine Wynn, CEO Diane Fearon, board members Elizabeth Blau & Kami Dempsey

The 3rd Annual Harvest For Hope, held at Cashman Center on November 1st raised $350,000 for Communities In Schools of Nevada.
The restaurants of The Cosmopolitan of  Las Vegas served delicious dishes to 600 guests, while families enjoyed everything from face painting to a pop-up arcade provided by Insert Coins, and a rousing rendition of The Cupid Shuffle. Fantastic live and silent auction items, including an original work of art created by artist Steven Spann with input from guests throughout the evening, resulted in lively bidding wars and happy guests. Our special thanks to NV Energy, who matched our direct give pledges up to $25,000.
If you missed out on the fun this year, don't worry.  Harvest For Hope will be back next year and we look forward to seeing you there!
Community Partners Work Together at Chaparral High School

With the help of community supporters and partner organizations, Chaparral High School site coordinators have created an incredible place for CIS students to "shop" whenever they need something.  From food to formal wear -  it's all here, along with school supplies, backpacks, jeans, shoes, and toiletries. Of course, there is no charge for these necessary items.  Those who contributed to this outstanding resource are Chaparral students, parents, teachers, support staff and administrators; Future Smiles,
3D Exhibits, Project 150, Title One Hope and Las Vegas Prom Closet. CIS
stocks the pantry with food from Three Square, and in addition to donated clothes, uses Goodwill gift cards to purchase needed clothes for students.

Realtors Raise Funds for CIS of Northeastern Nevada

The Elko County Association of Realtors raises money to benefit a local organization each year at their annual golf tournament, held this year at Ruby View Golf Course. Communities in Schools of Northeastern Nevada (CIS-NENV) was selected to receive funds raised through the tournament, which resulted in a donation of $3,500 to CIS-NENV.
Elementary Success Story

The CIS site  coordinator from Kit Carson Elementary has been working with a student who had the weakest math skills in her class and was struggling with basic multiplication and division.  After several weekly 45 minute sessions of math tutoring with the CIS site coordinator, the student has improved greatly. Her teacher reports that the student can actually do long division now,  knows all of her multiplication tables, and that the one-on-one caring relationship the site coordinator has established is making a huge difference in her academic performance. Our site coordinator will continue to work with this student to make sure she is academically ready for middle school.
