General Manager's Update

I hope this newsletter finds you well. We're keeping busy getting into the swing of new fiscal year things.  We have new interpretation and translation contracts in place , our new EmpowerLA Leadership Academy series on Planning 101 starts tomorrow, and we're still negotiating with other banks for the new Funding Program.

Some of our Valley Neighborhood Councils are making news this week.  Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council did a fierce response in CityWatch to a LA Times Op-Ed piece on planning, and the Studio City Patch did an article on Studio City Neighborhood Council President John Walker.  Also, Denyse Selesnick of Tarzana Neighborhood Council has started a thoughtful series on the Neighborhood Council system for CityWatch so I suggest checking those out, too. Search for her name on the Citywatch site, and they'll come up.

We were thrilled to hear at City Attorney Mike Feuer's celebration last Friday that he has appointed Capri Maddox, former President of the Public Works Commission and former former Neighborhood Council Deputy City Attorney, as his Special Assistant City Attorney.  Capri has been a great friend to Neighborhood Councils, and we wish her well in her new position.  I've also been meeting with some of our new electeds, Controller Ron Galperin, Councilmembers Curren Price and Bob Blumenfield, to chat up Neighborhood Councils and possible collaborations so I'm excited about that, too!

Don't forget to save the date for the Congress of Neighborhoods on September 28th!  There's so much on the horizon, and I'm looking forward to the journey with you. Have a great weekend!

Best,

Grayce Liu,

General Manager

The journey to a more sustainable Los Angeles begins with small steps, lots of them, such as reusing supplies, equipment, and furniture.

L.A. SHARES is an organization that supports Neighborhood Councils, community organizations, and schools with surplus and salvage goods. This gives the excess materials a second life and reduces the strain on Neighborhood Council and non-profit budgets....

The Board of Neighborhood Commissioners is considering making recommendations to the City Council on a number of important policy issues which govern the Neighborhood Council system. Before acting, the Commission would like to have your input through a survey.  Okay, so policy and surveys aren't the most exciting of topics... but they do matter.  To whet your appetite, here are the nine topics that you'll see addressed in the survey....
