General Manager's Update

I hope this newsletter finds you well. We had a great start to our next EmpowerLA Board Development series last Saturday on effective advocacy with our partners for the East Los Angeles workshop, Councilmember Reyes and the City Clerk. Councilmember Reyes' Outreach Director, Tony Perez, gave a very powerful and helpful presentation on how to work with the City Council Committees. Then I ran over to catch the Valley Alliance of Neighborhood Councils' Mayoral and Controller Candidate Forum. Nearly 200 people and 25 of the 34 Valley Neighborhood Councils were in attendance with great questions moderated by a very entertaining Dan Schnur.

The Board of Neighborhood Commissioner's Plan Review Committees tackled elections, boundary adjustments and subdivision this week. I am constantly amazed by the dedication of our Neighborhood Council leaders in their volunteer efforts to improve the system through careful analysis and discussion of the existing Plan language. It's really quite wonderful to be working with such folks.

Councilmember Buscaino took some time out of his busy schedule to talk Neighborhood Councils with me on Wednesday. He is known as the YouTube Councilmember with his weekly posted updates, and we swapped some outreach ideas, which is important with Neighborhood Council elections just a year away. Elections will be here in a a few blinks of an eye so start thinking about your election elements - candidate recruitment, outreach, bylaws and budget.

Speaking of budgets, please make sure your council is on track to spend down your funds and that your reconciliation reports are current. You'll be receiving a letter from us if they aren't. We'd hate to freeze funds right before the end of the fiscal year so please let us know if you need help with getting your reports in. Thanks for helping us keep public funds spending transparent.

I'll see you at the LANCC on Saturday. Don't forget to vote on March 5th!

Best,

Grayce Liu,

General Manager
