Interim General Manager's Update
Happy New Year! I hope this newsletter finds you well. After the holiday break and some much needed rest, we're off to an Olympic sprint start in 2013. On Saturday, the Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Coalition held their officer elections and welcomed new Chair Terrence Gomes and Vice Chair Glenn Bailey. Many thanks to outgoing Chair Bob Gelfand and Vice Chair Len Shaffer for their excellent work. Along with Secretary Dan Wiseman and Treasurer Alisa Smith, Terrence and Glenn will be working to reach out to Neighborhood Councils to take on citywide issues, such as the Street Repair Bond and Sales Tax Measures.
I was happy to stop by Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council's meeting on Tuesday night where I met LAFD Captain Stacy Gerlich who would like to partner with more Neighborhood Councils to work on CERT training. With the next round of Neighborhood Council elections only a year away, I welcome any opportunity to raise the awareness of Neighborhood Councils in Los Angeles so collaborating with the 57,000 CERT trained stakeholders in the City would be great!
Last night, the Valley Alliance of Neighborhood Councils invited Eric Garcetti to speak as part of their Mayoral Candidate series after which the VANC also took on the Street Repair Bond and Sales Tax Measures. There was some confusion about whether Neighborhood Councils can weigh in on such matters. We've done a write-up below, which includes some City Attorney documents on the issue. I hope your Neighborhood Councils will agendize these and other important citywide issues and submit Community Impact Statements so your voice and that of your stakeholders are heard at City Hall.
Keep warm and have a great weekend!
Best, Grayce Liu, Interim General Manager Department of Neighborhood Empowerment Empower Yourself. Empower Your Community. Empower LA.
