Interim General Manager's Update

I hope this newsletter finds you well. Wow, this short week was crammed with activities, and it's still not over since we have the Mayor's Budget Day tomorrow! We have over 200 RSVP's, and we're excited with the great line-up of speakers that we have, including Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Controller Wendy Greuel, Budget & Finance Chair Councilmember Paul Krekorian, CAO Miguel Santana, Deputy Mayor Monique Earl, Deputy Mayor Torie Osborn, the new Inspector General Fernando Campos, and our own Neighborhood Council Budget Advocates, Jack Humphreville, Vera Del Pozo and Co-Chair Jay Handal. A big thanks to all of our Budget Advocates this year and to Joe Hari for staffing their work first at the Mayor's Office and now with our Department.

Yesterday, we had a great wrap to our 2012 election cycle where 3 out of the last 4 Neighborhood Councils holding their elections had over 500 voters turn out, resulting in a 50% increase in voters to open seats from 2010. It's been an amazing election roller coaster ride, and we couldn't have done it without the support of our wonderful Neighborhood Councils, volunteers, IEAs, election and nonelection (for keeping everything else running smoothly) staff, the Mayor's Office, the City Attorney's Office and the City Clerk for creating a great foundation from which we leapt 5 short months ago. We'll be winding down, cleaning up and working on our post election report the next few weeks.

If your Neighborhood Council has not turned in your Election Encumbrance Reconciliation form, please do so ASAP! You will have until Friday, November 30, 2012 to provide us with that information or else any election funds you encumbered will be swept and your election expenses will come from current year funds instead.

Lastly, we submitted our Proposed Budget yesterday. Thanks to Jeff Brill for putting the final budget packets together while the rest of us took on elections, Mayor's Budget Day and the day-to-day Neighborhood Council operations support. We have put in a request for the elections and for additional staffing to assist us in our Neighborhood Council Funding Program. We look forward to working with the Mayor's Budget team and the CAO in the upcoming months to provide the budgetary support for a sustainable Department and Neighborhood Council system.

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow at the Mayor's Budget Day!

Best,

Grayce Liu,

Interim General Manager
