Picciotto is elected to the Institute of Medicine
Marina Picciotto, PhD, the Charles B. G. Murphy Professor of Psychiatry and professor of neurobiology and of pharmacology, has been elected a member of the Institute of Medicine, the arm of the National Academies charged with providing science-based advice on medicine and health to policymakers, professionals and the public at large. Picciotto is also assistant chair for basic research in psychiatry and associate director of the Yale School of Medicine MD/PhD Program. Read more

Yale alum builds a crucial bridge for psychiatry researchers
A $3 million gift will establish a Psychiatry Research Scholars Program under the aegis of the Yale Child Study Center and the Department of Psychiatry. The gift is from the family foundation of Herb Allison, MBA (pictured), a 1965 alumnus of Yale College. The three inaugural Scholars are Christopher Pittenger, MD, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry; Thomas Fernandez, MD, an instructor at the Child Study Center; and Tamara Vanderwal, MD, a fellow at the Child Study Center. Ketamine, a N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist, produces rapid antidepressant responses in patients who are resistant to typical antidepressants. Yale researcher explores what makes some people resilient
The study of resilience seeks to explain why some people suffer debilitating disabilities such as post-traumatic stress disorder while others with the same experience have only mild psychological symptoms that quickly disappear. Genomic study reveals new mutations linked to autism
Armed with genetic data from 30,000 individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders as well as 4,000 children enrolled in studies of autism spectrum disorders, researchers have taken a critical step in improving genetic diagnostic testing for children with autism. New tool measures emergency department interventions to reduce patient drinking
Yale researchers have developed and validated a new tool, the first of its kind, to measure how well emergency department physicians administer a brief intervention aimed at curtailing harmful drinking by patients. Michael Pantalon, PhD, a research scientist in the department of emergency medicine and assistant clinical professor of psychiatry, is lead author of the article which appears in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment. Griffith speaks on forensic psychiatry and diversity at University of Rochester
Ezra E.H. Griffith, MD, professor emeritus of psychiatry and of African-American studies at Yale, recently delivered lectures at three University of Rochester events - two as the annual Charles E. Steinberg Visiting Professor in Psychiatry and the Law, and the third as a public lecture on diversity for the University of Rochester community. Griffith is also deputy chair for diversity and organizational ethics and senior research scientist in psychiatry. Read more

Krishnan-Sarin is appointed to FDA Advisory Committee
Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry at Yale, has been appointed to serve on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC). Established in 2009, TPSAC reviews and evaluates safety, dependence and health issues relating to tobacco products and provides advice, information and recommendations to the Commissioner of Food and Drugs. Anticevic is recipient of NIH Early Independence Award
Alan Anticevic, PhD, associate research scientist in psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, is one of fourteen recipients of the NIH Director's Early Independence Award. The award recognizes talented junior scientists and accelerates their transition to independent research. Anticevic is the first Yale investigator to receive the honor. Read more

Steinfeld is named a 2013 Teaching Scholar by the American Psychoanalytic Association
Matthew Steinfeld, PhD, an instructor in psychiatry in the department's Psychology Section, has been selected as a Teaching Scholar by the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA), and will participate in the organization's 2013 APsaA Teachers' Academy. The prestigious Teachers' Academy is designed to nurture and develop the psychoanalytic educators of the future. Read more

Enrichment program aims to help kids learn to focus
Twenty kids, some with attention-deficit disorders, are part of a National Institutes of Health study to validate an enrichment program that combines computer games with physical tasks. Startup seeks to tap mind power
goBlue, a New Haven startup, is developing a tool for measuring when people have achieved a peak mental state and then training them to reach that state more and more easily. The technology is based on the research of company founder Judson Brewer, MD, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale. Recently, goBlue was selected to receive a grant from Connecticut Innovations' TechStart Accelerator program, designed to help launch technology businesses. Read more
