NATIONAL RETRIEVER CHAMPIONSHIP - SASKATOON
The National Retriever Championship will be held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and hosted by the Saskatoon Retriever Club September 18-24. The judges are Gerry Burmaster, Jim Green and Graham Tyler.

The NRCC website is loaded with information about the event. Check out the Schedule and follow the action with Daily Reports and Callbacks as well as see which dogs are Qualified.
DISTEMPER OUTBREAK
Distemper is something most of us seldom encounter. After all, we vaccinate our puppies and keep our older dogs up to date on their shots.

But distemper is highly contagious and serious with no known cure. Dogs that survive often suffer irreparable neurological damage. The disease can be tricky to diagnose in the absence of testing as symptoms can mimic those of tick-borne diseases.

While the disease can be managed, the outlook is not great. And this probably played a role in the Franklin (OH) County Dog Shelter's decision to euthanize more than 50 dogs over the weekend that were showing "severe clinical signs" or were determine to "not be suitable for quarantine."

You can read more about distemper here.
HUNTING
Waterfowl Forecast
DU has published an article on the 2016 Waterfowl Forecast produced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Canadian Wildlife Service.

The report is organized by region, making it easy to get a sense of how your hunting spot may fare.

You can read more here .

Top 5 Shotgunning Mistakes (and how to fix them)
Field & Stream's Phil Bourjaily demonstrates the top five shotgunning mistakes. His techniques work for "kids, new shooters and even veterans.

You can read more here.

Top Shooting Tips from Olympic Hopefuls
Field & Stream's Dan Saelinger has an interesting article on what he learned visiting the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs -- specifically:
  • Making Second Shots
  • Eye Exercises
  • The Perfect Gun Mount

You can read more here.

Kansas Pheasant, Quail Populations Good
The Kansas Department of Wildlife says that Southwest Kansas could have "the best overall pheasant population in the state with Northwest Kansas coming in a close second. And the outlook for quail hunters is one of the best in the past 20-30 years.

You can read more here.
IT TAKES MORE THAN PRACTICE
According to a study published in Perspectives in Psychological Science, practice accounts for just "18 percent of the difference in athletic success."

So why is this? According to the article's author Brooke Macnamara, "learning rates vary. Some...improve very quickly with less practice, while others require much more practice."

So if practice doesn't account for the differences, what does?
  • Personality and perseverance
  • Propensity to get injured
  • Propensity to choke under pressure
  • Differences in maximum oxygen uptake
  • Differences in how muscle mass is acquired
  • Coordination
  • Height
  • Enjoyment of competition.
Happy training! You can read more here.
LOVE THE DOG YOU'VE GOT
Sometimes the dog we end up with doesn't live up to our expectations. Even though we research the parents, develop a solid training plan and sketch out a travel schedule that will give the pup the best competitive opportunities, it just may not be enough.

Here's a good article to help you love the one you're with. You can read more here.
