DISTEMPER OUTBREAK

Distemper is something most of us seldom encounter. After all, we vaccinate our puppies and keep our older dogs up to date on their shots. But distemper is highly contagious and serious with no known cure. Dogs that survive often suffer irreparable neurological damage. The disease can be tricky to diagnose in the absence of testing as symptoms can mimic those of tick-borne diseases. While the disease can be managed, the outlook is not great. And this probably played a role in the Franklin (OH) County Dog Shelter's decision to euthanize more than 50 dogs over the weekend that were showing "severe clinical signs" or were determine to "not be suitable for quarantine." You can read more about distemper here.

IT TAKES MORE THAN PRACTICE

According to a study published in Perspectives in Psychological Science, practice accounts for just "18 percent of the difference in athletic success." So why is this? According to the article's author Brooke Macnamara, "learning rates vary. Some...improve very quickly with less practice, while others require much more practice." So if practice doesn't account for the differences, what does?
- Personality and perseverance
- Propensity to get injured
- Propensity to choke under pressure
- Differences in maximum oxygen uptake
- Differences in how muscle mass is acquired
- Coordination
- Height
- Enjoyment of competition.
Happy training! You can read more here.

LOVE THE DOG YOU'VE GOT

Sometimes the dog we end up with doesn't live up to our expectations. Even though we research the parents, develop a solid training plan and sketch out a travel schedule that will give the pup the best competitive opportunities, it just may not be enough. Here's a good article to help you love the one you're with. You can read more here.
