Vol. VI, Issue 18
September 7, 2016
IT TAKES MORE THAN PRACTICE
According to a study published in Perspectives in Psychological Science, practice accounts for just "18 percent of the difference in athletic success."

So why is this? According to the article's author Brooke Macnamara, "learning rates vary. Some...improve very quickly with less practice, while others require much more practice."

So if practice doesn't account for the differences what does?
  • Personality and perseverance
  • Propensity to get injured
  • Propensity to choke under pressure
  • Differences in maximum oxygen uptake
  • Differences in how muscle mass is acquired
  • Coordination
  • Height
  • Enjoyment of competition.
Happy training! You can read more here.
FUNDING TO STUDY THYROID DISEASE
AKC's Canine Health Foundation has announced a new grant funded by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals to "address thyroid disease in dogs."

You can read more here.

LOVE THE DOG YOU'VE GOT
Sometimes the dog we end up with doesn't live up to our expectations. Even though we research the parents, develop a solid training plan and sketch out a travel schedule that will give the pup the best competitive opportunities, it just may not be enough.

Here's a good article to help you love the one you're with. You can read more here.
WHICH WAY IS NORTH?
Many of us rely on cellphone apps to help us provide wind direction and compass. But in case you find yourself without your technology, Field & Stream has published a quick idea.
  • Drive a three foot stick into the ground in a sunny spot.
  • Set a stone at the tip of its shadow.
  • Wait 20 minutes then place another rock at the tip of shadow.
  • The first marker indicates the west and the second marker indicates east.
SHOTGUNS
What Makes A Shotgun Shootable?
Some guns make you look good, others...not so much.

Acccording to Field & Stream, here are the key attributes.
  • Fit
  • Balance
  • Weight
  • REcoil reduction
  • Choke
  • Trigger
  • Beads
You can read more here.

The House of Beretta
There are guns and then there are Berettas. Garden & Gun has written an article on the Valle Trompia factory where arms have been made for more than 2000 years. The craft of engraving began as a way to "cover up the little imperfections ...where the metal meets the wood...[and] grew into the art form that we know."

You can read more here.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG GETS POISONED
We hope it never happens to you or one of your dogs, but if it does, you might want to read this article.

You can download it here.
HOW TO NOT GET INVITED TO A DUCK BLIND
The sport of duck hunting runs from making prepa

rations tothe stories told around the fire afterward. Field & Stream has listed just some of the ways you can jeopardize an invitation.

You can read the top ten list of mistakes here.
BLACK LEGGED TICK
Summer may be over but you and your pet remain vulnerable to a tick that's active in the fall and the winter -- the Western Black Legged Tick.

So just in case you were thinking you could back off on repellent, don't.

You can see more here.

TREATING CHIGGER BITES
We've run a pointer to this article before, but chiggers are so awful, we thought we should post it again.

You can read about three different remedies here.
