LOUISIANA FLOODING
| |
You've seen it on the news. Now is your chance to help fellow retriever people and their dogs. The Amite River HRC has set up a donation page where you can make a contribution to help the people and dogs that have been flooded out of their homes. You can donate here.

SCENTING | |
The PBS Newshour website has published an interesting article that goes "inside the extratordinary nose of a search-and-rescue dog." While scientists have figured out how sight works, our sense of smell remains something of a mystery.
Here are some of the highlights:
- Dogs smell "in stereo" through a labyrinth of passageways that "filter air into different parts of the nose."
- Some of these "turbinates" send air to be warmed (making scents easier to distinguish), others separate odor chemicals by "weight and solubility."
- Dogs use the outer portions of the nose to "sample" the air in different directions allowing dogs to distinguish the freshness of an odor.
- Slits on the side allow dogs to take twice as many breaths as we do in the same amount of time.
- Dogs circle the outside of a scent area to figure out where the odor is coming from.

SUPPORT THE FARM BILL
| |
The Conservation Reserve Program helps America's farmers, ranchers, and forest owners to voluntarily conserve environmentally sensitive land. Once supporting 37 million acres of soil, water and wildlife habitat, Congress has reduced the size of the program to just 24 million acres.
The petition to expand the CRP program is being supported by numerous organizations including Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl and Quail Forever. You can sign the petition here.
