HYPERTHERMIA AND HEATSTROKE
Hyperthermia in dogs is defined as having a body temperature above 103 degrees. Heatstroke in dogs is defined as having a body temperature of 106 degrees or higher and can lead to multiple organ dysfunction. (Source: PetMD.)

Here are some of the warning signs (with thanks to our vet Dickinson-McNeill).
  • Panting
  • Dehydration
  • Excessive drooling (ptyalism)
  • Increased body temperature - above 103 F (39 C)
  • Reddened gums and moist tissues of the body
  • Production of only small amounts of urine or no urine
  • Sudden (acute) kidney failure
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Irregular heart beats
  • Shock
  • Stoppage of the heart and breathing (cardiopulmonary arrest)
  • Fluid build-up in the lungs; sudden breathing distress (tachypnea)
  • Blood-clotting disorder(s)
  • Vomiting blood (hematemesis)
  • Passage of blood in the bowel movement or stool
  • Black, tarry stools
  • Small, pinpoint areas of bleeding
  • Generalized (systemic) inflammatory response syndrome
  • Disease characterized by the breakdown of red-muscle tissueDeath of liver cells
  • Changes in mental status
  • Seizures
  • Muscle tremors
  • Wobbly, incoordinated or drunken gait or movement (ataxia)
  • Unconsciousness in which the dog cannot be stimulated to be awakened
If any of these symptoms exist and you as the pet's owner or guardian feel an emergency exists, take the animal immediately to a local emergency center.

Given the extreme heat seen in many parts of the country this year, we asked Nate Baxter, DVM to update his article that focuses on prevention. In it, he reviews:
  • Symptoms & warning signs
  • Prevention
  • How to Recognize an Emergency
  • Knowing what's normal for your dog
You can download the article here.
SHOTGUNNING ADVICE
Fredrick Broden
Garden & Gun has published an article that should help you improve your shot.

Check out these tips for better shooting care of two-time Olympic skeet gold medalist Vincent Hancock.

You can read more here.
SIGNS OF A BAD BOARDING KENNEL
Sometimes you just have to board your dog. Here are some indicators that you might want to look out for. Pet MD has created a list of signs that send you packing to another spot.

You can read more here.

COMPETING WITH CANCER
As healthcare for our dogs becomes increasingly sophisticated, they are able to live longer and healthier lives. Even when it comes to cancer. In this clip, John Robinson talks about his dog Gus (Topbrass Montana Lonesome Dove), a 2016 National Am competitor, member of the Derby List, and currently being treated with chemotherapy. You can also read the article published in his local paper.  As John says, "We'll just take it day by day, train and run as long as he feels good and enjoys it while watching for any sign otherwise."
HEALTH
PetMD has published a good article on over-the-counter meds and the effect they can have on your dog.

You can read more here.

STINKY BOOTS
Field & Stream reader Thomas Shipshock has a great way to rejuvenate your boots. Buy a sack of corn and bury your boots in it. A few days of immersion will take care of the aroma.

NILO FARMS
Winchester celebrates the legendary John Olin, Nilo Farms and King Buck in this video of the 150th anniversary.
DUCK NUMBERS LOOKING GOOD
According to the U.S. Fish and wildlife Service overall duck numbers are "statistically similar to last year and remain steady...with 48.4 million breeding ducks." DU has put together a handy chart showing how the numbers have changed compared to last year and the long term average.
