There are any number of reasons why your dog coughs and many different types of cough: dry, soft, honking.
While much of the time there's no cause for alarm, there are instances where a cough can indicate a serious problem. The Good Vet and Pet Guide and Petmeds each have good articles on the subject.
Flooding and Lepto  The weather has been extreme in different parts of the country. If your area has experienced flooding, be on the lookout for signs of leptospirosis, whose infection can cause severe damage and even be fatal.
