FROM THE EDITOR
|
|
It's here, the first Retriever Results Newsletter including information from the first few weeks of 2016.
As you know we've worked closely with the NRCC to build systems and processes that "should" result in an accurate and useful website and informative newsletters.
We may run into a few snags in our first few weeks. Please bear with us. That said, if you see something wrong, let the NRCC Secretary know. We want this to be a valuable service for the community.
Your comments and suggestions are welcome as well. You can send those to feedback@retrieverresults.com .

FROM THE NRCC SECRETARY
| |

Event Reporting System Up & Running
The NRCC Event Reporting System is up and running with results from the first six trials of the season already reported. Results are available on the NRCC website by choosing Field Trial / Field Trial Results from the left side menu or by visiting the Retriever Results website. Click on the Blue Results opposite the trial you want to view, then select the stake. In addition, you can now track the top dogs, handlers, and kennels in Canada, and National Qualifiers updated after each trial is reported.
Club secretaries are now able to quickly create running orders, produce catalogs, and report results using one convenient database.
Accuracy Matters The information that appears in the catalog and online starts with the entry form.
As the saying goes, garbage in, garbage out. By reviewing your entry form for typos, errors in birth dates, titles, and CKC numbers, before you submit it, will ensure your information is correct in the catalog and online.
It is especially important to correctly identify the Handler in the Open (and every) stake. Making an error here may mean that placements won't be properly attributed, leading to a delay in CKC Amateur titles, absence from the list of Qualifiers for the National Amateur, errors in Rankings and may create problems with the running order for the stake. And if you do see something amiss online, please report any errors to results@nrcc-canada.com so the information can be corrected.

SHOOTING | |
Shooting Steel
Field & Stream has an interesting article about a survey designed to understand hunters' antipathy to nontoxic shot. The findings may surprise you.
Back to School Ducks Unlimited reports that shooting schools are growing across the country. The keys to a good shot?: "uniform mount, accurate point and smooth swing."
|
KEEPING TICKS & CHIGGERS OFF | |
Field & Stream reports on ways to repel both ticks and chiggers. The key is to use a DEET formulation of at least 30 percent and apply it strategically.
Of course, other sources promote the use of repellants that aren't loaded with "toxic chemicals." You can read about those solutions here. |
HEALTH | |
Free Animal PoIson Control App
The ASPCA has created a free mobile app that includes a wealth of information on how to deal with toxins your dog may have ingested.
You can download it at the App Store or on Google Play.
Canine Cancer
The AKC CHF has published information that should help you prepare if one of your dogs is stricken with cancer. They have created a podcast that talks about "What to Expect When you Visit a Veterinary Oncologist." You can also read the transcript.
More Ticks
If you think ticks are gross, check out the spinose ear tick. You can read more about it here - yuck!
Loading and Unloading
Using a ramp can save wear and tear on your dog and you. While it may seem as if your dog can easily sustain jumping in and out of its dog box, that activity can slowly but surely damage your dog's soft tissue, bones, and joints.
You can learn more here.
Hemangiosarcoma Study
A study, being conducted at the University of Minnesota, is looking for participants.
You can learn more here.
Why Do Dog Paws Smell Like Fritos?
We know. You just went over and smelled your dog's foot. That Frito smell is a result of common bacteria that live on "even the cleanest dog paws."
You can learn more here.
