HUNTING ROUNDUP | |
Meet the Whites, the first family of quail in Missouri. Over the years, quail populations have dropped precipitously in parts of the country, but the White family is determined to support bobwhites by providing protective cover, open areas for feeding and resetting vegetation.
Field & Stream reports that the family is now working with the Missouri Department of Conservation and have worked together to "launch a quail research-and-restoration plan on public and private lands." The results are impressive with areas reporting three to five times more bobwhites.
You can read more here.
Best Guns Ever Made Field & Stream has created a list of the "Best Guns Ever Made." Guns were chosen based on their impact on the firearms industry, longevity, excellence and "general-horribleness-but-still-works-like-a-son-of-a-bitch." You can read more here. Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge

BLIND OF ARDEN

Remember Life magazine? Well the December 12, 1938 issue featured Blind of Arden on the cover. Owned by Averell Harriman, the dog "practices on live pheasants for half an hour each day."

RETRIEVER HALL OF FAME INDUCTION
| |
Two people and two dogs were inducted into the Bird Dog Foundation's Hall of Fame last week. You can read more about all the nominees here.
To be inducted both individuals and dogs should meet a number of criteria. Any member of the Field Trial community can nominate a person or dog. Nominations for the 2016 Retriever Hall of Fame are due in August.
Here are the 2015 inductees. Congratulations to all!

Purina is a big supporter of the Bird Dog Foundation. So this year it was particularly exciting that an English Springer Spaniel named FC-AFC Raintree's Sassy Lady, owned by Dean Reinke and Catherine Lewis was inducted as well.

Thank you Purina! (l-r) Ray Cacchio, Karl Gunzer, Dean Reinke, Greg Blair and Terry Trzcinski.

5 LESSONS

Hannah d'Entremont has written an excellent article about the impact riding has had on her life. - Hard work really does pay off
- Mental strength is just as important as physical strength
- Winning isn't always everything
- Being competitive shouldn't involve being mean
- I am the person I have become because of my sport.

More on Hip Dysplasia
Vet Lonnie Davis has published an interesting article on the importance of proper positioning in a dog whose hips are being x-rayed for OFA. In it he shows how the same dog, positioned differently could receive a grade of mild or good dysplasia.

CHECK OUT THE NEW RANKING | |
Even though there were no AKC hunt tests last weekend. we thught we'd let you know about a new feature we've been working on.
With the new year comes a new ranking. We are trying something out and would like to hear what you think. We have tracked passes since mid-2009 and began tracking starts in January 2015. As a result we are now able to create a new ranking of Master Pass Rates based on calendar year.
Here's a link to the new page with 2015 results. (You can look at 2016 but there haven't been enough hunt tests to make the results meaningful as yet.)
