HOW BE MENTALLY TOUGH

Navy Seals and Olympic athletes have more in
common than you might think. Members of both groups are not only physically fit, they're also mentally tough.

Here's what they do to be their (mental) best:
1) Talk positively to yourself
2) Set goals
3) Practice visualization
4) Use simulations

You can read more here.
AKC AWARDS
Breeder of the Year By Sport
The AKC recognizes an outstanding breeder or pair of breeders in each of the seven groups as well as in each of the subgroups.

This year Dr. Mary Tatum has been awarded the 2015 Breeder of the Year for Retriever Field Events - Labradors. In addition Jackie Mertens has been awarded the 2015 Breeder of the Year for Obedience - Golden Retrievers. You can read more here.

A few months ago, we let you know about one of the nominees for an AKC Lifetime Achievement Award. In case you haven't heard, John Russell did win the 2016 AKC Lifetime Achievement Award in the Performance Event category. (The other categories are Conformation and Companion events). You can read more here.
HUNTING NEWS WRAP UP
The DU, PF and Avery websites have a wealth of information useful to hunters. Here are links to articles we found interesting:
  • PF has published state-by-state forecasts for those making rooster roadtrips. Read more here.
  • DU has published waterfowl migration maps. Read more here.
  • Scott Linden, writing for Outdoor Life has a good article on how to "pack it in" for a hunting trip. Read more here.
  • DU has published an article on "Calling the Shot" that just may help make the trip more successful for everyone. Read more here.
  • Temperatures have finally dropped in the East. DU talks about the impact on the Atlantic Flyway. Read more here.
  • An app to help you set up decoy spreads from Decoy Pro. Read more here.
  • DU has put together an interesting article about the incredible diversity of critters waterfowl eat. You can read more here.
HEALTH WRAPUP
Is a Cough Just a Cough?
So your dog just coughed. How do you know if it's serious? Here's an article to help you differentiate between a cough and a reason to see the vet. You can read more here.

Fish or Coconut Oil?
First we heard about the benefits of fish oil, then coconut oil comes on the scene. Which one is best?

According to the Dogs Naturally website, they are both good, for different reasons. You can read more here.

You take a bite under the watchful eye of your dog. You give in, break off a piece and share your food. Those calories can add up. Graphic courtesy White Lodge Veterinary Surgery.

Incidence of Reported Hip Dysplasia
Other than environment (see next item), selectively breeding for normal hips is the main way to reduce the incidence of dysplasia. The OFA has created some great charts that show how the reported incidence has changed over the past 30 years.
Hip Dysplasia
We're reported it before, but we think it's important so we're going to say it again. Research on hip dysplasia makes it clear that some portion of the incidence of the condition is controllable -- by owners. As reported in the Institute of Canine Biology, "we often talk about hip dysplasia as if it is a discrete disorder... in dogs dysplasia is a processs with no fixed endpoint."

You can read more here.
