 UPCLOSE AT THE NATIONAL
UpClose Photo
Those of you who attended the 2014 National Championships in Vicksburg were lucky enough to see some terrific dog work first hand. If you weren't there, you can feel as though you were by checking out the amazing photos taken by Mark & Shannon Atwater of UpClose Photo.

You'll see photos of each dog that started the event, the winner, the finalists, plus shots from other series. And the Atwaters are still hard at work, uploading even more photos. Visit the website to see the action and order some photos.

NEWS WRAPUP
The Price of a Puppy
We all know how expensive it can be to campaign a dog. And it all starts with the purchase of a puppy. While much of this article is familiar, it may help those of you who breed. You can learn more here.

Scent & Airflow
Neat article on how dogs use their noses to find just about anything. Read more here.

The Genetics of Bloat
Tufts is leading a research project designed to "unravel the complex genetics of bloat." Currently researchers believe bloat is closely linked to a dog's size and confirmation, but suspect that genes play a role too. You can learn more here.

Watch Them Poop
Believe it or not, researchers have discovered that dogs can detect the specifics of the earth's magnetic field, aligning themselves on a north-south axis -- tending to face north, while they do their business. You can learn more here.

Detecting Cancer
Dogs working as part of trial in England have been found to be 93% accurate at detecting prostate cancer, more reliable than current blood tests. The success of this study has led to additional studies designed to see if dogs can help detect cancers for which there is no current screening method. You can learn more here.

Saying Goodbye
No-one likes to think about it, but it's worth thinking through how you'll say goodbye to an ailing pet. Thanks to Lydia Fekula for providing this article.
