| NATIONAL DOG WEEK | |
 For many of us, every week is National Dog Week, but this week (September 19-25) is the official one. Here are some fun facts thanks to the ACVIM:
- 1 million dogs in the US have been named as the primary beneficiary in their owner's will
- Dogs have 2x the number of muscles in their ears compared to humans
- A dog's hearing is more than 10x more acute than a human's
- A dog's sense of smell is more than 100,000x stronger than that of a human
- A dog's nose prints are as unique as a human finger print

| PARVO WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW | | |
Recent news stories regarding canine parvovirus outbreaks should encourage you to ensure your dog is current on vaccinations. If not, or if its vaccinations are nearing their end dates, be sure your dog is seen as soon as possible by your vet.
The American Veterinary Medical Association has a website with excellent information regarding canine parvovirus.

| FILLING A PRESCRIPTION FOR A DOG | |
 From The New York Times' Metropolitan Diary
The mega-drugstores that have replaced the "mom-and-pop" drugstores of a bygone era can be a blessing (convenience and selection) and, at times, a problem. What has become my personal "Groundhog Day," a reference to the Bill Murray movie that has scenes recurring over and over again, is when I go to pick up a prescription for my dog at one of the aforementioned mega-drugstores.
Me: "I would like to pick up a prescription."
Pharmacy worker: "Patient's name?"
Me: "The prescription is for a dog."
Pharmacy worker: "Date of birth?"
Me: "Not sure of the date of birth, but the prescription is for a dog."
Pharmacy worker: "Date of birth?"
Me: "Sorry, but I don't know the dog's date of birth."
Pharmacy Worker: "Can I use January 1?"
Me: "O.K."
Pharmacy worker: "Does the patient need any counseling on the use or have any questions about the medicine?"
Me: "The prescription is for a dog."
Pharmacy worker: "I need someone to sign that the patient does not need any counseling."
Me: "Can I sign for the dog or do you need him?"
Pharmacy worker, without a hint of a smile: "Please sign here."
