| DOGS AT WAR | |
 Afghanistan and Iraq are just some of the most recent instances where dogs have supported troops on the battlefield.
The National Geographic website has introduced a daily six-part series that reviews how dogs have contributed. |
| DETECTING MELANOMA | |
Yes, our dogs (and cats) can get melanoma. And,  as in humans, melanoma can be aggressive. However, unlike in humans the most common place to find melanoma in dogs is as an oral tumor. In fact, bad breath may be an early warning sig n.
According to a recent article in VetStreet, "oral melanomas are most commonly black, raised masses that frequently bleed." Melanoma may also appear as a broken toenail where the nail breaks at the junction between the toe and the toenail or as a very sore, swollen toe. "The tumor weakens the nail, which snaps off without provocation." |
