NEWS YOU CAN USE ON GRASS AWNS
FoxtailWe probably all know someone who has or has lost a dog due to a grass awn infection. A number of articles have been published recently about the dangers of these "mean seeds."

Grass awns can be ingested, inhaled, enter through the eyes, ears or skin. One of the most challenging aspects of grass awn infections is how difficult they can be to diagnose, locate and treat.
  1. Field & Stream's website has just published an article about the dangers associated with grass awns. Dangerous grasses include: foxtail, barley, cheatgrass, nimblewill and wild rye. The articles cites a good explanation from the AKC's Canine Health Foundation and another website called The Grass Awn Project.
  2. Listen to a podcast of an interview with Dr. William Laurenroth produced by the AKC's Canine Health Foundation on how to protect your dog and a summary of the work he is doing.
  3. Another terrific source is Bob West's  interview with Cathy Lewis found on the Gun Dog Magazine website. Since the resulting infection is often unfamiliar to vets, she suggests printing out information found on these sites and bringing the material with you to your vet.
  4. The Gun Dog Magazine article also asks those of us who have dogs that have experienced the effects of a grass awn infection to provide case study information via email to regentess@gmail.com.
PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR DOG
Most of us are thrilled to have good pictures of our dogs. And part of the reason is because they can be difficult to take, particularly for those of us with black dogs!

Here are some tips offered by VetStreet:
  1. Get down at your dog's level, about even with your dog's face.
  2. Use natural light or if indoors, be sure there's enough light.
  3. If outdoors, shoot at the beginning or end of the day or on a cloudy day.
  4. Be sure the camera is focused on the dog, not the background, making the dog's eyes the main focus. (And think about the background to make sure it's what you want.)
  5. If you're using your smartphone, check out a service like Instagram where you can enhance (and even "fix") the original photo.

CORRECTIONS & AMPLIFICATIONS
We strive to deliver accurate information quickly, but from time to time, we make mistakes. If you believe a results or handler is listed incorrectly, please let us know!

Last week we reversed the two dogs that had qualified for the 2014 National Amateur and the 2013 National Open. The correct information is above.

You are receiving this email because you registered with RetrieverResults.com, expressed interest in the web site or your dog placed in or finished a recent event.  If you no longer wish to receive this email, unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the page.  This will not affect any account you may have with RetrieverResults.com.

Data in RetrieverResults are drawn from print, telephonic and electronic sources we believe to be reliable.  When the source material lists two handlers, we generally take the first one unless we have direct knowledge of who handled the dog. To correct any errors or omissions, please use the feedback link on the website or send an email to feedback@retrieverresults.com.
