NEWS YOU CAN USE ON GRASS AWNS | |
|
Foxtail Barley Grass |
We probably all know someone who has or has lost a dog due to a grass awn infection. A number of stories have been published recently about the dangers of thse "mean seeds."
Grass awns can be ingested, inhaled, enter through the eyes, ears or skin. One of the most challenging aspects of grass awn infections is how difficult they can be to diagnose, locate and treat.
Here is a recap:
- Field & Stream's website has just published an article about the dangers associated with grass awns. Dangerous grasses include: foxtail barley, cheatgrass, nimblewill and wild rye. The article cites a good explanation from the AKC's Canine Health Foundation and another website called The Grass Awn Project.
- Listen to a podcast of an interview with Dr. William Laurenroth produced by the AKC's Canine Health Foundation on how to protect your dog and a summary of the work he is doing.
- Another terrific source is a Bob West's interview with Cathy Lewis found on the Gun Dog Magazine website. Since the resulting infection is often unfamiliar to vets, she suggests printing out information found on these sites and bringing the material with you to the vet.
- The Gun Dog Magazine article also asks those of us who have dogs that have experienced the effects of a grass awn infection to provide case study information via email to regentess@gmail.com.
|
PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR DOG | | Most of us are thrilled to have good pictures of our dogs. And part of the reason is because they can be difficult to take, particularly for those of us with black dogs!
- Get down at your dog's level, about level with your dog's face.
- Use natural light or if indoors be sure there's enough light.
- If outdoors shoot at the beginning or end of the day or on a cloudy day.
- Be sure the camera is focused on the dog, not the background, making the dog's eyes the main focus. And think about the background to make sure it's what you want.
- If you're using your smartphone, check out a service like Instagram where you can enhance (and even "fix") the original photo.
