Meldahl Hydroelectric Facility Dedication
Half of Hamilton's energy will now come from Hamilton Utilities' renewable source
The dedication and ribbon cutting for the Meldahl Hydroelectric dam was held on June 2nd. This project represents a significant investment and is now the largest such facility on the Ohio River. Since groundbreaking in 2010, over 400 workers were employed in constructing the dam. It is expected to operate for more than 100 years providing 58,000 homes with renewable, green energy, and will produce an average of 550 million kilowatt hours (kwh) annually. Read more about Meldahl here.

Barclaycard Earns REDI Growth Award
Annual award recognizes projects that attract and retain businesses, jobs, and capital investment
 
Barclaycard was recognized at the Regional Economic Development Initiative (REDI) Cincinnati Commercial Developers Power Breakfast and Growth Awards ceremony. Barclaycard began their Hamilton operations in February with 50 employees, with plans to employ at least 250 by the end of this year and to double their employment in 2017. Their presence in Hamilton and their plans to create a total of 1,500 jobs within three years represents a commitment to the community and will help to attract and retain businesses, jobs, and capital investment in the area. The annual James A. Wuenker Growth Award presented by REDI recognizes companies that bring high value to the Greater Cincinnati area. Read about the award here.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Barclaycard
Over 100 people attend ceremony to celebrate opening of customer contact center
 
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Barclaycard's new facility at the Vora Technology Park on May 2nd. In attendance were, among others: U.S. Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown, Ohio Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor, State Senate President Keith Faber, State Senator Bill Coley, State Representative Wes Retherford, REDI Cincinnati President and CEO Johnna Reeder, JobsOhio President and CIO John Minor, Barclaycard CEO Curt Hess and Chief Operations and Technology Officer Patrick Wright, City of Hamilton Mayor Patrick Moeller, and Butler County Commissioner T.C. Rogers. The Barclaycard customer contact center is expected to create a total of 1,500 jobs over the next three years. Prior to moving into their current location, the company spent over $9 million to renovate an initial 40,000 square feet of vacant or underutilized office space and will utilize approximately 150,000 square feet within the next few years. Ribbon Cutting and Open House at STARTEK
Call center in downtown Hamilton opens

On April 20, STARTEK, located in the center of downtown Hamilton, held a ribbon cutting and open house. Representatives from the corporate office of STARTEK were in attendance to celebrate the partnership between the company, the City of Hamilton, the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, and CORE. Once fully operational, STARTEK will employ 682 people and plans to hire as many as 200 people by the end of this year. Check out their Facebook page by clicking here.
Municipal Brew Works Grand Opening
Hamilton's first craft brewery in 80 years
 
The grand opening of Municipal Brew Works was held on June 8th. The brewery occupies what used to be the fire station in the old municipal building on High Street, and is the first craft brewery in the city of Hamilton in 80 years. It is owned and operated by five founding partners, two of them Hamilton natives. An estimated 1,500 people attended the grand opening. Read their story here.
CORE Sells Two Properties
Two families become new homeowners in the community

The MacKenzie-Thurley family and the Vallandingham family both recently bought property from the Consortium for Ongoing Reinvestment Efforts (CORE). Ian MacKenzie-Thurley, the Executive Director at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts, and his wife closed on their home in April. In early May, CORE closed their first commercial sale when the Vallandinghams bought the building where their business, Sara's House, is located. Read about the sales here.

New Business Activity on Historic Main Street
Revitalization efforts bring in five new shops

Hamilton's Main Street in the historic Rossville district became home to five new small businesses this quarter. Fleurish Home, a home decor boutique which also hosts home project workshops and classes, recently began renovations on 135 Main Street and plans to open early this fall. At 116 Main Street, IVY Salon & Gallery is a modern take on the traditional barber shop experience.  Serendipity opened in early June at 233 Main Street and Treasures on Main is at 235 Main Street; both sell rediscovered and re-purposed vintage antiques for the home, office, and garden. Finally, 118 Main Street will soon be home to The Studio, a do-it-yourself pottery painting shop which also plans to offer classes.

Hamilton Flea Held in German Village
Monthly urban curated flea market on Third Street Plaza

The very first Hamilton Flea was held on May 14 and will continue to be held from 11-5 the second Saturday of every month through September. The Flea takes place in Hamilton's historic German Village district on the newly revitalized Third Street Plaza. Community members can attend for free to browse the booths of local businesses and artists, as well as to enjoy craft beers and food trucks. These events will foster the revitalization efforts of Hamilton, engage the community, and and serve as a small business incubator. An estimated 5,000+ people have attended the first two markets. StreetSpark Murals Underway
Murals planned to improve city streetscape

Residents passing through the Main Street corridor will have noticed the new StreetSpark mural of Alexander Hamilton facing Armstead Park at the corner of Main and D Street. StreetSpark is a program created through a partnership between the City of Hamilton and the Fitton Center for Creative Arts. These projects provide opportunities for local artists while at the same time showcasing Hamilton's flourishing art scene and enhancing the visual appeal of the city. Another project, "Make Way for McCloskey", is currently underway on the former municipal building, and will pay homage to children's author, illustrator, and Hamilton native Robert McCloskey. The Great Ohio Bike Adventure Comes to Hamilton
Annual week-long bike trip began and ended at Butler County Fairgrounds

This June, Hamilton saw an influx of approximately 1,500 cyclists who began and ended this year's Great Ohio Bike Adventure (GOBA) here. This annual week-long bike trip takes participants on a roughly 400-mile trip around a selected region of Ohio, and this year cyclists were able to tour the scenic country roads of southwest Ohio. The event kicked off with a bicycle parade from Butler County Fairgrounds to RiversEdge, where opening ceremonies and a free concert were held. The Butler County's Visitor Bureau worked with GOBA and their staff, the City of Hamilton, RiversEdge, and the Butler County Fairgrounds to support and plan this event. RiversEdge kicked off the summer with their concert series, which features bands playing a variety of music styles on Thursdays and Saturdays.  All RiversEdge concerts are free and open to the public, so come out and get something from the food trucks while you enjoy the music.
