Pope Resource is "thinning" some forests on their private timberlands and will begin a series of rolling temporary trail closures starting next week. Check portgamble.com for the exact roads, trails and areas that are currently closed, and for more information about the thinning project. As Pope Resources opens areas back up and temporarily closes others, they'll update their website.
Please remember trail users are guests on private land. Stay safe and respect the temporary trail closures. Unfortunately, some flagging has already been pulled down. The flagging is important to ensure operations are conducted within the permitted area and to protect everyone's safety. Let's help out the company that allows us to enjoy trails on their private land, and stay out of the way.
Come support the toughest runners around!
The Lumberjack Endurance Run is coming to Port Gamble April 11 and 12 and has 100 mile, 100K and 50 mile options. This is part of the Roots Rock race series and benefits the North Kitsap Trails Association. If you aren't ready to run for up to 30 hours, please help NKTA, the trails and the runners by volunteering. The runners appreciate the support so much and it's fun to cheer them on! If you are interested in helping, send us an email or call Brooke or Chris at Poulsbo Running (360-779-8757). Food and beverages will be provided to all volunteers.
Do you know what NKTA accomplished in 2014?
Here's what your membership dollars, donations & time helped NKTA get done in 2014:
Supported $1.8 million in County grant applications to acquire land in Port Gamble.
- NKTA volunteer trail scouts crawled over logs and through salmonberry jungles to help County Public Works find a feasible trail connection from Kingston to the Port Gamble trails.
- NKTA trail planning helped secure the grants for the new Port Gamble shoreline park. Plus NKTA donated funds, organized the press tour and helped stage and clean up after the party!
- Amazing progress on the Sound to Olympics Trail on Bainbridge--$3.5 million in grants secured and construction to start this year!
- Kitsap is now the home of the first National Water Trail in Washington state.
- New local community trails @ Kingston Village Green and Poulsbo's Raab Park.
- Learn more about our work last year, and help us get even more done in 2015.

NKTA, County Parks and REI team up to improve new trailhead

March |
Check out the newly improved trailhead at Kitsap County's Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park along SR 104. Kitsap County Parks, NKTA volunteers and a mix of County, NKTA, and REI grant funds are all being put to good use for some loooong overdue maintenance at the trailhead parking area. The old parking area has been cleaned up, re-graded and graveled. Coming soon to trailhead near you: a new fence and a trailhead kiosk. Our new gorgeous park is starting to look gorgeous when you arrive!
What is a Mountain Bike Ride Park?
NKTA has been working with Kitsap County, Kitsap Forest and Bay Partners, the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance and Pope Resources to purchase land for construction of a mountain bike park near Port Gamble. The County's grant proposal for state WWRP funds was ranked highly and we hope will receive funding by the Washington legislature this June.

- Graded and banked "flow trails"
