New maps for the Port Gamble trails!
Check out the location of Kitsap County's new Port Gamble Shoreline Park on the new maps. For a larger map, click the image.
New maps are installed on the trails and at trailheads, and are in the brochures at the trail heads. The new 534 acre park has 1.5 miles of shoreline (not very accessible yet) and can be accessed from the Bay View trailhead, about a mile south of Port Gamble on highway 104. There are no trails or parking lots on the water side of the road so please be considerate of the neighbors and don't head down their driveways. So 534 acres saved! The next challenge is the remaining 3316 acres!
Poulsbo Marathon/Half/10K/Relay
Sunday October 12th
The 5th annual Poulsbo Marathon is Sunday October 12 at 7:30 AM, all races begin and end at North Kitsap High School. The marathon has something for everybody; marathon, half marathon, 10K, kids dashes, or gather some friends together and run it as a relay.
If you aren't running, please consider helping! Volunteering at the race can be a family affair. Some of the jobs include packet pick up and registration, course marshals, start and finish line helpers, and cleanup crews. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, contact Lisa at volunteers@poulsbomarathon.com.
The Poulsbo Marathon has generously donated its proceeds to NKTA every year since its inception. It is by far NKTA's largest regular donor AND it's lots of fun! We need lots of volunteers to ensure that the runners have a great day, so if you aren't racing, please consider helping!

NKTA is pleased to be the recipient of a $10,000 stewardship grant from REI
This years' grant will be divided between several projects:
- A pilot project for water trail signage in coordination with the Kitsap Peninsula Water Trail Alliance and Visit Kitsap. This project will mark water trail launch sites from land and water, so people know both where they can launch and take a break.
- Purchase of trail maintenance equipment and tools.
- A trail construction project at the Kingston Green.
- A trail construction project at Raab Park in Poulsbo.
If you're interested in water trails, you'll be interested in two projects.
- We're looking for volunteers to help w/ the water trail signage pilot project--we'd like to find people to spearhead the specifics on just two or three sites in your area. If you are willing to help with this fall/winter project, please contact us at info@northkitsaptrails.org
- Kitsap County, Visit Kitsap and the National Park Service are organizing the Kitsap Peninsula Water Trails Alliance, a regional effort to work on Kitsap's National Water Trail system. For more information on this exciting project, please contact Eric Baker at (360) 337-4495.

Haunted Hike and Spooky 12K Trail Run Sunday Oct.26th
Put this date on your calendar, because you won't want to miss this! NKTA is hosting a free "Haunted Hike" on the Port Gamble trails immediately following the 8th annual Spooky 12K Trail Run (part of the Roots and Rocks series put on by Poulsbo Running). 12K race starts at 8:30, the kid's 1 mile starts shortly after, and the free guided haunted hike starts at 11. All begin at the Uplands Trailhead, (just south of Port Gamble, and north of the newly acquired Kitsap County Shoreline Park). You can choose between 1 and 2 mile hikes. Two guides will lead a brisk group and a more leisurely group, telling actual accounts of ghost sightings and paranormal experiences that took place in Port Gamble (if you believe that sort of thing) and discussing the current land status - we still have 3316 acres to save on the Port Gamble Watershed block!
Port Gamble is widely known as one of the most haunted towns on the West Coast, and there are plenty of spooky stories to tell. As a matter of fact, there is a ghost conference in Port Gamble happening on the very same weekend. Whether you believe the stories or not, this hike is sure to entertain the whole family and provide more info on the trail status! Following the hike, anyone signing up for an annual membership to NKTA will be treated to a complimentary coupon to either Borrowed Kitchen Bakery in Kingston or a free beer at Slippery Pig Brewery in Poulsbo. Don't miss this fun Halloween activity!
