Help design Phase II of the Sound to Olympics Trail on Bainbridge! 7 PM Wednesday September 17 Bainbridge Island City Hall
Sound to Olympics regional trail on the Island between Winslow Way and Vineyard Lane--building active transportation connections with all West Sound communities. The meeting will present project context, purpose, and goals; note physical and financial constraints; and receive input from stakeholders on potential elements and alternatives.
The City of Bainbridge Island has been awarded three grants to design and construct more than a mile of the Sound to Olympics Trail from the toll booths at the Washington State Ferries Terminal up to High School Road--thus connecting the entire Winslow business district, civic centers, neighborhoods, schools, ferries and Kitsap Transit with a bicycle and pedestrian spine route along SR 305. The first two of three funded segments will be built in 2014, connecting up to the existing non-motorized bridge which crosses the Winslow Ravine along the east side of the highway at the Vineyard Lane development.
The awarding of these grants is a huge accomplishment for a small municipality and all West Sound communities competing with larger municipalities which have specialized staff to track funding and write such grants. Broad support, including that from the North Kitsap Trails Association, has been a major factor in this funding success. Funding sources prioritize projects which serve the greatest numbers of people, support denser development to minimize sprawl, and connect to regional centers--in this case, Seattle.
The first of these grants, through the Washington State Department of Transportation's Pedestrian and Bicycle Program covers design and construction of both the STO and on-road bicycle facilities in the SR 305/ Olympic Drive corridor through the intersection of Winslow Way--Winslow's main street. Two very well attended public meetings hosted by the Bainbridge NMTAC have helped narrow down design alternatives and a final design recommendation is being developed which will integrate with this next STO section.
The second grant, through Puget Sound Regional Council's Transportation Alternatives Program will construct the STO on the east side of the highway by Umpqua Bank at SR305 & Winslow Way north to Vineyard Lane, incorporating an existing trail from Cave Avenue, which is separated by a buffer of trees from the highway. This grant also provides preliminary design for the remaining route up to High School Road, including a separated grade bicycle-pedestrian crossing of the highway near Vineyard Lane, i.e. bridge or tunnel--which will break up a mile long super-block to connect neighborhoods and key destinations on both sides of SR 305.

Save The Date! Poulsbo Marathon/Half/10K/Relay October 12th
The 5th annual Poulsbo Marathon takes place Sunday, Oct. 12th at North Kitsap High School. The Poulsbo Marathon has generously donated its proceeds to NKTA every year since its inception. If you aren't prepared to run a marathon, there is something for everybody; a half marathon, 10K, kids dashes, or gather some friends together and run it as a relay. All races begin at 7:30 am and begin and end at the high school.

The Poulsbo Marathon is by far NKTA's largest donor AND it's lots of fun! We need lots of volunteers to ensure that the runners have a great day, so if you aren't racing, please consider helping! Volunteering at the race can be a family affair. Some of the jobs include packet pick up and registration, course marshals, start and finish line helpers, and cleanup crews. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, contact Lisa at volunteers@poulsbomarathon.com.
