Grants, Volunteers & Donations To Complete
New Trail In NK Heritage Park

The NK Heritage Park Stewardship Group, NKTA and volunteers from Aspect Consulting LLC, will team up later this summer to build a boardwalk to reroute the trail cross the wetland near the parking lot at Miller Bay Road. It will complete the Boundary Trail, creating a loop with the Spine Line Trail. Grants from Puget Sound Energy ($3,000) and the Suquamish Tribe ($2,000), combined with $500 from the Kingston Rotary, will fund the purchase of materials. This will be the second year that Aspect Consulting employees have done a major project in the park. Park steward Dave Haley is coordinating the project. Thanks to all the volunteers and donors that will help make this happen!

Trails & Happenings In Port Gamble

• New Trailhead open: Olympic Property Group (OPG) has built a new trail head to access the Port Gamble area trails. The roughly 60 miles of trails have become so popular that parking is impacting neighbors and local businesses. The new trail head is just south of town off highway 104, and even has a map kiosk and parking that for horse trailers. It is adjacent to the RC airfield, so be sure to keep off the landing field. NKTA will try to keep the kiosk stocked with trail maps or you can download them from our website (link). Also, NKTA is partnering with NW Trail riders, backcountry horsemen and OPG to post some trail maps in a few key locations on the trails themselves. This land is privately owned timber land, so only the logging roads are signed.

• NK Herald series of articles on trails: The North Kitsap Herald has begun publishing a series of articles describing the trails that are part of the Kitsap Forest and Bay land conservation proposal. The first article is on the Beaver Trail Loop, a short hike accessible from the new trail head. NKTA will post these and other descriptions of local trails on our website. If you would like to help write articles about your favorite trail, contact us at info@northkitsaptrails.org

• OPG community open house: OPG held an open house June 27 to share their plans for Port Gamble with almost 400 community members. If you missed it, information on their plans is available on OPG's website.

• Puget Sound Partnership Award: The Kitsap Forest and Bay coalition just received a "Puget Sound Champions" award from the Puget Sound Partnership for their efforts to try to protect forests and bay in Port Gamble and North Kitsap.
