Weekly Column by Mr. Weiss

Letters to Mr. Weiss - deadline this Wednesday

Parents are invited to write a letter, addressed to me, regarding class placements for next year. I ask that you focus on your child's needs, both academic and social. You may not request a specific teacher.

The information you provide will be shared with staff and will be one of several criteria considered as we develop class lists for the new school year. Please note that email will not be accepted for this purpose.

The deadline, no exceptions, for this letter will be Wednesday, May 6.

This Thursday will be our Poetry Picnic & "Poem in your Pocket" Day

This Thursday will be  "Poem in your Pocket Day" when we also hold our annual "Poetry Picnic" during your child's lunch shift on the front lawn. Students should find a great poem to read or write one of their own. Parents are welcome to join their child during his/her lunch shift on May 7. The rain date is May 8.

Save the Date - iPad Workshop (& PTA General Meeting) May 12 at 9 a.m.

Please join us on Tuesday, May 12 at 9:00 a.m. in the media center for a hands-on workshop highlighting the use of Schoology and Google Drive on iPads at school.  If you have a tablet, laptop, or smart phone, please bring it to fully participate.  This will also be our PTA General Meeting so we hope many will come out to hear the latest PTA updates and learn about Schoology and Google Drive, two key platforms being used by students at Riverside in grades 2-5 (parents of students at all grade levels are welcome).

Parents - Save the Date - S.T.E.M. Fair - May 13

On Wednesday, May 13 from 6-7:30 we invite all family members to join us for our S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Student Fair and see all the innovative and experiments, inventions, and projects developed by our students.

SBA Assessment Schedule

Grades 3 & 4 SBA make-ups will be held as needed 5/4-5/8

DLE Presentation from the BOE Meeting

The presentation "Top 10 DLE Positive Outcomes at Riverside School" (shared at the BOE meeting) is available here:

See the Current Work of the DLE

An article on the 1:1 DLE in the Greenwich Schools from the Greenwich Time last month shows some of the great work happening in classrooms.

Enjoying the larger parking spaces?

We were able to make our new parking spaces wider now that spring has arrived. We also are thankful to the district for the wider front sidewalk (with the addition of the beautiful bricks). The last section will be completed soon.

"Walk This Way" is back!

Starting Monday, we are launching our "Walk This Way" initiative to encourage a better environment. We would encourage students (if it is safe to do so) to either walk or ride their bikes to school, or to carpool or ride the bus (if eligible) at least 10 times a month for May and June.

Important News about the Art Department

Mrs. Jacobson has announced her retirement as our art teacher after serving our community with beautiful art and a joyful spirit for over 30 years. We wish her all the best in her retirement at the end of the year! Additionally, Ms. Jalil (our part-time Art teacher) has accepted a full time art position at Central Middle School for next year. We thank her for her wonderful work with our students as well. We are now embarking on a district process to select art teachers to fill these positions for next year.

Fitness Challenge

THE RIVERSIDE SCHOOL FITNESS CHALLENGE IS ON!!!

The Wellness Committee is sponsoring the "Fitness Challenge" starting tomorrow. Forms for kids to record their daily physical activity should be in your Friday folders.  The challenge runs for 6 days starting Saturday, May 2nd through Thursday, May 7th.  By simply completing the form and submitting a completed form on Friday, May 8th, you will be entered into a raffle.  The Wellness Committee will randomly choose 1-2 students per grade to win a prize.   All you need to do is submit a completed form to enter the raffle.

***Forms are due back to school (submitted to your teacher) on Friday, May 8th***

To get everyone in the fitness mood, there will be a "warm-up activity" each day next week led during the morning announcements by Bill Bogardus.  Additionally, on Wednesday, May 6th we will be hosting a special in-school activity during the lunch recess periods run by one of our very own Riverside School parents to reinforce that being active is easy and fun.

DID YOU KNOW...Like adults, kids need exercise.  Most children need at least an hour of physical activity every day.  Regular exercise helps children:

- feel less stressed

- feel better about themselves

- feel more ready to learn in school

- keep a healthy weight

- build and keep healthy bones, muscles and joints

- sleep better at night

Riverside Run

Kindergarten is winning the Riverside Run registration challenge with 32 students registered to participate in the run, with the first grade still just a few runners behind.

FIELD DAY GRADES K-2

Field Day Grades K-2:

Help is needed to run an hour of our K-2 Field Day Morning program on

Wednesday May 27th with a rain date of Friday May 29th

Please sign up for a slot at 8:509:50, or 10:50 but for the second two shifts, please plan to arrive 10 minutes early for "on- the -job" training.   The 8:50 shift need not come early as the students begin at their first station at 9:10.  Parents will be working in teams of two.

If you prefer to email me with your time slot preference and all of your contact information and rain date availability, I will sign you up for a station in need of supervision, and will email you back with your assignment.  I will try my best to accommodate your time preference but, unfortunately,  cannot guarantee a particular station activity request, or that your child(ren) will be coming through your station during the time that you are "working".  However, you are certainly invited to walk around to see your child in action prior to, or after your shift.

[email protected].ct.us

Sign up sheets are posted on the wall beside the main school office.  Please be sure to write your information CLEARLY as I will be making up email group lists for further communication.  There are spots for your name, phone #'s, email, and rain date availability.

Thank you for your support of this fun event!

FOURTH GRADE PARENTS

Kids In Crisis "Stuff a Duffle"

The Riverside Student Council is now collecting items for Kids in Crisis.

This organization helps children who are victims of neglect and abuse.

Please bring in new twin sheets, bath towels and face cloths in addition to items that can be "stuffed in a duffle" for children who arrive at the crisis centers without anything from home.  These items include:  duffle bags, drawstring bags or backpacks which we can stuff with pajamas, socks, underwear and small toiletries like toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Safety...we STILL need your help!!!

car safety

We still need volunteers for our Safety Committee.  There is an on-line
sign-up allowing parents to volunteer only here and there and not have to commit to the whole year, much like lunch duty. A Safety Shift starts when the front doors open at 8:30a and ends when the bell rings at 8:45a. It's very easy and takes very little time, but helps to keep the kids safe.

Please consider helping us with this important job of keeping all the children safe.
