Innovation at Riverside School

Riverside teachers participated in two innovative professional learning activities recently. We held a training session on the TouchCast video app with the NYC developers. A number of teachers and classes have been using TouchCast to produce interactive presentations (including occasional morning video announcements). You can see the latest TouchCast which mentions the innovative teachers at Riverside here.

Also, on the early release day this past Wednesday, teachers hosted their own personalized professional development event called an EdCamp here at Riverside. Fourteen sessions were facilitated by volunteer teachers so other teachers could
pick the topics most relevant for their work and share together resources and learning over each of four sharing sessions.

Joining us for the Boo Bash?

I am looking forward to seeing many families at tonight's Boo Bash events. Thanks to all the parents and PTA members who planned and are running this fun evening. Please remember - no dangerous (or dangerous-looking) accessories (including swords, etc.) or inappropriate costumes, please. Thank you.

I CARE FOR MYSELF DAY

Riverside students participated in I Care for Myself activities during their morning ROPES CounSEL on Thursday.  In first grade, students made a list of how they can care for themselves. In specials, students reviewed how the norm Caring for Self and Others as well.  Fourth grade students are very excited to create videos that exhibit ways to Care for Self and Others. Overall, the day was a success and students were able to share how the norm relates to their own life.

Safety... we need YOUR help!

car safety

We still need volunteers for our Safety Committee.  There is an on-line
sign-up allowing parents to volunteer only here and there and not have to commit to the whole year, much like lunch duty. A Safety Shift starts when the front doors open at 8:30a and ends when the bell rings at 8:45a. It's very easy and takes very little time, but helps to keep the kids safe.

Please consider helping us with this important job of keeping all the children safe.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN

TURKEY TROT

Attached is a flyer from our good friends at Greenwich Alliance about their annual Turkey Trot on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 29th.  Please consider participating and don't forget about the $500 prize to the school with the greatest participation.

Thank you for your support!

FROM THE NURSE

Greenwich Public Schools, in agreement with the Harvard School of Public Health, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Association of School Nurses, recognizes that the management of head lice should not disrupt the educational process, especially since no disease process is associated with head lice.  Further best practice suggests that regular head lice screening in schools does little to reduce the incidence of head lice (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2003).  Rather it is important that parents regularly inspect their child for head lice, perhaps at the same time they inspect their child for the presence of deer ticks, a far more serious threat to their child's health.

Further as we all know, all health information regarding students is absolutely confidential, and the student's privacy must be respected.  Therefore, any child who exhibits any symptoms of head lice should be referred to the school nurse who will work with the student's parents to care for the child and avoid further cases.  "The school nurse retains an important role in educating all constituencies about pediculosis and dispelling myths and stigmas regarding lice infestation." (National Association of School Nurses, Position Statement 2004).  The school nurse at each school will provide information about pediculosis to parents and staff.  Any questions at this time can be directed to Ruth Holz, School Nurse at 203-637-1440.
