CASA in Georgia Celebrating 25 Years of Service

This fiscal year 2013 (July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013) marks 25 years of the CASA organization in Georgia! In 1988, Georgia CASA was founded by Karen N. Sibley, Kathie Gannon and Nicki Vaughan. It was originally a program of Kids in Georgia Need Volunteers, Inc. Georgia CASA began developing CASA programs in the state, starting in Hall and Dawson counties in Northeast Georgia. In 1992, Georgia CASA became its own 501(c)3 nonprofit and transitioned the developed programs into independence as they became affiliates of Georgia CASA. Today, Georgia CASA provides comprehensive support services to its 47 current affiliate programs serving 140 counties throughout the state and continues to work on developing and/or expanding existing affiliate programs to the 19 unserved counties. Over the past 24 years, over 93,000 abused and neglected children have been served by over 20,400 CASA volunteers, leaving a rich legacy of service to the children of our state.

During this celebration year, look for the 25 years of CASA service in Georgia to be promoted at all of Georgia CASA's regular events, including CASA at the Capitol Day in February, the Georgia CASA Conference and the Luncheon & Fashion Show, both in March. Plans also include a 25 years of service kick-off reception and culmination event, along with promoting the 25 years of service in various other ways.

Big Voice for Children Awards Event

For the sixth year in a row, the nonprofit organization Voices for Georgia's Children (Voices) is proud to recognize the state's top child advocates at its Big Voice for Children Awards dinner, which this year will take place on Friday, November 9th at the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta.

Among Voices' honorees is Georgia CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and its network. This award comes as Georgia CASA celebrates 25 years of service in Georgia. The Big Voice for Children Awards honor individuals and organizations that have improved children's lives as vocal advocates for change. This event also serves toBig Voice Awards Logo
elevate the importance of policy and advocacy in improving the lives of children, recognizes community members who have been effective advocates for children, and engages local communities and the media in recognizing the honorees and the important work of advocacy. Georgia CASA and its network of affiliate CASA programs have provided exceptional support to Georgia's children through work to develop and support these court-sanctioned, community-based affiliate programs that provide trained and supervised volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in juvenile court deprivation proceedings.

Georgia CASA is among a distinguished group of past and present Big Voice honorees with outstanding accomplishments in child advocacy. This November 9th, Georgia CASA will share the stage with the following other winners: Bill Bolling (Founder and CEO of the Atlanta Community Food Bank) and several community-nominated honorees, including Elaine Draeger (President and CEO, Sheltering Arms), Tim Johnson (Executive Director, Family Connection/Communities in Schools of Athens) and Patricia Nobbie (Deputy Director, Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities).

For those who wish to celebrate Georgia CASA's achievements, consider purchasing individual tickets to the Big Voice awards dinner, becoming a corporate event sponsor, or making a contribution to Georgia CASA. Donors who give $250+ will be recognized in the 2012 Big Voice event program. For more information, please contact Voices at 404-521-0311 or info@georgiavoices.org.

Telemedicine Making Big Difference for Society's Smallest Victims

Published in Georgia Health News, July 23, 2012

A 9-year-old girl in rural Georgia discloses the unthinkable: sexual abuse by her stepfather. The case is referred to police and local child welfare officials, who contact the Stephanie V. Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children. A doctor soon conducts a physical examination and speaks with the child.

What makes this story different is the geographic distance between

Telemedicine
Dr. Jordan Greenbaum

doctor and the child. The center is in Atlanta, and its medical director, Dr. Jordan Greenbaum, handles the "visit" in real time through telemedicine. The little girl is able to stay close to home in her rural area, in more familiar and reassuring surroundings.

This scenario is typical of an expanding application of telemedicine in Georgia - evaluation and diagnosis of child abuse and neglect. Georgia is setting the pace nationally for promoting telemedicine as a way to deliver medical care in rural areas, using high-definition cameras to illuminate problem areas and transmit them to a physician hours away with clear pictures.

The examinations can range from routine ailments -- ear and sinus infections, bronchitis, skin abrasions -- to more complex cases, including behavioral health issues.
