Read about the history of this special day.
Find a festival or celebration near you(e.g., Amsterdam, Jerusalem, Kiev, Ljubljana, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Sofia or Tel Aviv).
Support Translators without Borders and Red T.
Put other language holidays in your calendar. (Did you even know about International Mother Language Day?)

Finally, don't overreact when you read that Google Translate is now nearly as good as a human translator. Take a look at this article and read between the lines. Google's full of hot air.

Celebrate International Translation Day with a Great Video

This animated introduction to simultaneous interpreting launches with a story. And what a tale! One misinterpreted comment from Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev in 1956 to western ambassadors (rendered "We will bury you") created an international firestorm.

The rest of the video, at less than five minutes, highlights with humor and accuracy what simultaneous interpreting is all about--and why it matters.

It's short and witty, a great educational tool. It's also fun to watch! Pass it on.

Legal Interpreters Should Check out "Op-Docs"

Here is a study and practice resource for legal interpreters. It goes by the name "Op-Docs."

This link consists of a video called "Expert Witness" that reenacts a legal transcript, with links to other cases. Great stuff!

Around the world, many translators and interpreters earn a living thanks to language policies that recommend or require the provision of language services.

Hot off the press, here is a book that claims to the first to be devoted to translation policy. That makes it indispensable for language libraries.

Today, migration and globalization have catapulted government decisions about whether or how to legislate language requirements to high priority. As the publisher writes:

This book recognizes that these choices (or the absence thereof) become policies of their own in terms of translation. It builds upon the work of scholars in the fields of translation studies and language planning and policy in order to develop a new theoretical perspective on translation policy. In essence, the book proposes that translation policy can be understood as the management, practice, and beliefs surrounding the use of translation. The book deals with these issues under European and international law and then explores such management, practice, and beliefs in the UK, as a case study.

IAPTI Comes to Buenos Aires in 2017--Call for Papers

Looking for an excuse to visit Argentina?

The International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (IAPTI) will hold its next conference on April 22-23, 2017, in Buenos Aires. The conference website is not yet posting details, but the call for papers has a deadline of October 20, 2016.

Submit abstracts (no more than 300 words) to the Organising Committee. Priority will be given to new topics not presented
before at other conferences. Include:

A title.
A description
A short bio (up to 100 words)
A profile photo.

Speakers will have 45-50 minutes for their presentations and 10 minutes for Q&A. The conference fee is waived for speakers (one per presentation).

A big player in the medical VRI industry, Stratus Interpreting is currently looking for Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese interpreters at a guaranteed hourly rate. Interpreters can work from home and receive benefits that include a 401K and personal time off.

Language Services Will Surpass US $40 Billion in 2016
