New U.S. Federal Rule Targets Discrimination in Healthcare
On May 13, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a final rule under the Affordable Care Act . The goal is to advance health equity and reduce health care disparities."

The rule targets protecting individuals "from discrimination in health care on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability and sex, including discrimination based on pregnancy, gender identity and sex stereotyping."

The final rule prohibits sex discrimination in health care by requiring that women be treated equally with men in the health care.It also includes protections for individuals with disabilities and people with limited English proficiency.

HHS also has a fact sheet with frequently asked questions about the rule.
An American Interpreter Connects with Deaf Bhutanese
Imagine being a refugee.

Imagine being a deaf refugee.

Now imagine being a deaf refugee from Bhutan transplanted to--Vermont. A hard life, of course. To add to the challenges, free classes for English for refugees don't include American Sign Language (ASL). Yet it turns out there is an oddly significant number of Bhutanese refugees in Vermont who are deaf.

Enter ASL interpreter Stephanie Cramer, who joined in cooking classes for this community and has been teaching the refugees ASL. It's a lovely, touching story.

in healthcare

This week's "book" is an international journal's special edition packed with great articles that lie at the intersection of health care, language and communication. From the special issue's editorial:

"This special issue is born from our mutual work and concern about how language barriers affect patients under our care and their health outcomes. The papers...illustrate the scope of how language and communication issues affect the care we deliver across care contexts and around the world."

This issue spans the globe from Ghana to Taiwan, the Netherlands to the U.S. It includes articles on perioperative, home care, primary care, long term care, physical therapy and the research on language barriers and interpreting in health care.
