A Petition to the UN Urges Protection for Translators and Interpreters
Change.org, an organization that circulates petitions, has set up a petition directed at the UN. It focuses on the risk to translators and interpreters in war-torn countries, conflict zones and those with military regimes. The petition cites kidnapped, tortured and executed linguists and imprisoned translators, among others.

The petition adds, "The simple practice of our profession makes thousands of us vulnerable to loss of life, limb and liberty."

It's a petition to pass on to others. Interpreters and translators shouldn't have to risk their lives to do their work.
So What Is a Terminologist? A Transcriber-Translator?
They've done it.

First, let's get the alphabet soup out of the way. AIIC, Mano a Mano, NAJIT and NCIHC are, respectively: a) the International Association of Conference Interpreters; b) the leading association for trilingual interpreters (for American Sign Language, Spanish and English); c) the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators; and d) the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care.

They all worked hard to produce something simple. Simple, but hard to write: clear definitions of the terms for interpreters and translators.

Eight months in the making and hot off the press, this document published by NAJIT is intended "To support clarity in understanding the role of Translators, Interpreters, Transcriber-Translators and Terminologists..." Feel free to share!

BOOK(S) OF THE WEEK

Picture of books
Introduction to Healthcare for Spanish-speaking Interpreters and Translators. Ineke H.M Crezee Holly Mikkelson and Laura Monzon-Storey, John Benjamins, 2015.
This book is based on the popular international publication (Crezee, 2013), in this edition supplemented with Spanish glossaries. The book provides a "big picture" of healthcare settings and an overview of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and common conditions, diagnostic tests and treatment options.

A clear handbook, this one even includes a chapter on the bedeviling U.S. health insurance system. The Spanish glossary terms reflect usage in various parts of the Americas and in Spain.

ON THE CALENDAR
GALA Comes to New York

This year, the big international association for the language industry, GALA (Globalization and Localization Industry) brings its annual conference to New York City.

Coming up on March 20-23, the conference now focuses on interpreting as well as translation, thanks in great part to InterpretAmerica's "think!Interpreting" special contributions.

And of course, there are provocative titles like "Abolish the Per Word Pricing Model" or "Think You Don't Need a Board of Advisors? Think Again!"
France Hosts a Seminar on... Medical English

The Société française des traducteurs (SFT) will hold an intensive session for a full week for translators and interpreters on March 14-18, 2016 in Lyon, France. The topic is medical English. No doubt it will keep the participants busy!
If You Can Dream It... Mobile Free Sign Language Training
The goal is simple. The execution is a challenge.

Veditz.org has a dream: that instead of only 2% of the Deaf having access to education in sign language, Veditz will change that number to 100%. It's an assault on social injustice--an impressive one, if it works. For Veditz is working to create the first mobile, on-demand and live interactive video chat tutoring and practice platform.

This free tutoring will be available to the Deaf--and anyone else who wants to learn sing language. Veditz start with American Sign Language, working with professional teachers with certification. Then they'll move on with other languages such as Spanish, British and Chinese sign language.

I was deeply saddened to learn this week that a Kickstarter campaign on behalf of this project was just canceled. Let's pray that Vedizt finds happy "sugar-daddy" funding because this sounds like a beautiful project in need of a big-heart funder.

Good luck to Veditz!
