One Kids' Video Can Change the World--and Save a Language

Try not to love these kids. You'll fail.

You know the bad news: half our 7,000 languages and the precious cultures tied to them may die before the century is out. One way to try saving them is using social media to reach out to youth.

This video does that and more. With 200,000 views on multiple online postings, kids rap about Kukama, their native tongue. The video is amazing, beautiful and fun.

It also helped launch an Indiegogo campaign, for a school to preserve the language and books to teach it. Congrats to the kids: you are astounding.

Un-Tweet That Translation

Ah, the perils of Google Translate.

Phil Neville found out the hard way. A well-known English soccer (football) coach in Spain, Neville decided he should be gracious and tweet in Spanish.

Poor idea.

His recent tweet Morning--early run on the beach to start today came out as corrida de la maana en la playa de empezar el da. Just one problem. What his Spanish sounded like in Spain was something more like, Ejaculation on the beach to start the morning.

Oops.

BOOK(S) OF THE WEEK

Interpreting in Spanish-Influenced Settings: A Curriculum Guide, NCIEC, 2015

"This volume applies the domains, competencies, and skills published in Toward Effective Practice: Interpreting in Spanish-Influenced Settings in a teaching format that offers ideas and approaches for instruction."

A trainer's guide--for free!

If you are an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter trainer who also works with Spanish, this astounding resource will be precious. The culmination of four years of work by countless authors, contributors and collaborators, comes from an authoritative source: the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC).

This book might well represent the most significant contribution to date for the teaching of "trilingual interpreters" (ASL/Spanish/English). Warmest congratulations to NCIEC on this achievement.

ON THE CALENDAR

Just in Time: A Glossary for the Greece Crisis

Having trouble following the news on Greece? Is your grasp of economics terms a little shaky?

This glossary will do the trick. It comes from a Telegraph article called, "It's all Greek to me: a glossary of the Eurozone crisis." I found it actually helped me understand the tragedy a little better. To test it, I looked for a new term I'd heard--and found it:

Grexit

A handy portmanteau for "Greek exit", this is the buzzword you will have seen being thrown about as shorthand for a Greek departure from the eurozone.
