Read an Immigrant Father's Letter of Love

From the Seattle Times comes one of the most moving immigrant stories I've ever read. It's the letter of a refugee from Bhutan to his newborn daughter.

This eloquent piece by Som Nath Subedi gives us a window into the lives and hearts of immigrants around the world: those who uproot their lives to move to another country and build a new life while still keeping ties with their first culture.

His writing is so beautiful and moving. A letter from the heart.

Learn Words as Pictures

Finally there is scientific proof of something I've always known.

Since I was 7 years old, people have been trying to convince me that I don't see words in my mind (like elephant) but pictures of the meaning (like an image of an elephant). That's just not always true for me.

It turns out that seeing words as images helps us read faster. Recent research has tested adults on exactly this hypothesis. It turns out that if your brain processes the word as a whole image (instead of reading each letter), you read faster. Quite a study!
