Top 10 Tips: De-Cluttering Mother

1. Tell Mom it's ok to let go. The love is in the memory, not the object. Suggestion: take photos of your old trophy collection so mom can see it on her computer rather than allow it to continue to clutter a room. And remind her that she doesn't have to dust the photo!

2. Go through the home and put everything where they belong. If nothing has a spot or permanent location help your mother find the best home for the object.

3. Have your mother compile a "To Do" List, then lend a hand. She may need the gutters cleaned or windows washed.

4. Organize the spices and seasonings that have accumulated over the years. Ask her how she would like them to be organized. Maybe alphabetical is the easiest, maybe by taste.

5. Get a digital photo frame for her and load it with pictures of your childhood. This is a great alternative to all those boxes of photographs. Put the pictures on a loop so every time she looks at the frame there will be a new picture looking at her.

6. Dust the top of the refrigerator or ceiling fans, spots that your mother cannot easily reach. We don't want mom breathing that dust every time the fan is turned on!

7. Wash her car and clean out the random wrappings and empty water bottles that have been lying around on the floor of the back seat.

8. If your mother has a garden, help her plant flowers or prune roses. Untangle the hose and upgrade the gardening equipment if necessary.

9. Help your mother de-clutter her spirit. This can be in the form of a nice spa day or pleasant walk. Be thoughtful and do something enjoyable for your mother.

10. If your mother is already a completely de-cluttered person, keep her that way by following my tips in Psychic Debris, Crowded Closets: The Relationship Between the Stuff in Your Head and What's Under the Bed. Purchases, reviews, and comments may be found here.
