The Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care
www.HernandezCenter.com

Greetings!

First of all, we'd like to welcome Dr. Sage Lynn Siemon, N.D., to our staff at Pacific Naturopathic.  A short bio on Sage follows below.  At first, Dr. Sage will be primarily working in the intravenous therapy center. But with her wide range of skills, we it's just a matter of time before Dr. Sage is integrated into other therapeutic aspects in the clinic.

The theme for this month is "Remedies That Work."  As always, we neither prompted our writers in any way nor did we try to integrate themes.

Dr. Connie begins by musing on how belief systems play a part in remedy effectiveness and offers three simple, effective naturopathic remedies.  Dr. Marcel follows with three short articles on the elegance and effectiveness of the Myers Cocktail offered in the IV center; Elijah Free writes about remedies he developed that are effectively helping his clients overcome obstacles to healing; Jane Hernandez writes about the portability and effectiveness of EFT; Dr. Brad discuss the misplaced hoopla on "evidence based medicine" and echoes Dr. Connie in writing that the effectiveness of a remedy all comes down to knowing yourself; and Lauren Hoover-West offers a yummy recipe for mushroom broth.

As always, there are thoughtful articles on breast thermography and the profoundly healing environment at our Hawaii vacation rental.  Also this month, Dr. Marcel has penned a short article on the economic politics of finding a cancer cure that might open a few eyes.

Be Well.

Dr. Connie, Dr. Marcel, Dr. Brad, Dr. Sage and your health care team at Pacific Naturopathic and the
Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Meet Dr. Sage Lynn Siemon,

-- new associate at Pacific Naturopathic --

Dr. Sage Lynn Siemon has joined the staff of Pacific Naturopathic and will be primarily working in the intravenous therapy center.

Dr. Sage is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, a nationally certified massage therapist, as well as a certified lymph therapist for the upper extremity. Her passion in homeopathy and energy medicine led her to graduating as a naturopathic doctor in 2000 from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences.

Dr. Sage  also holds a degree in Advanced Massage Therapy from Palmer Institute and has received multiple certifications including Master Teacher Reiki, Divine Intervention Spontaneous Remission, and Metis Medicine Way Lightworker.  She has extensive training with Bodywork, Yoga, Botanicals, Nutrition, Aromatherapy, Hydrotherapy, and Homeopathy.  Her bodywork styles are a combination of Swedish, Deep Tissue, Neuromuscular, Trigger Point, Shiatsu, Thai Yoga, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, Reflexology, Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), Hot Stones, and Sacred Aromatics.

Dr. Sage's goal is to assess each client "as the whole person," evaluate their vital force, and guide them on a journey of healing aligned in their own unique flow.

What impressed us about Dr. Sage is her friendly, outgoing personality as well as her experience and skill level as a naturopathic doctor.  Dr. Sage and Dr. Marcel took the intravenous therapy certification program together and have been friends and professional associates ever since.

Dr. Connie's Musings...
Dr. Connie basks in elemental energy -- the pure air, sparkling light
and rich colors at our Hawaii retreat.

Remedies That Really Work

For some folks and for some conditions, indicated remedies predictably work and work well, and for others, well chosen remedies rarely work.

Sometimes people cling to incorrect diagnoses made by themselves or others. When the diagnosis is incorrect, the remedy which would be indicated if the person actually had the diagnosed condition, is not actually indicated, and will not work.  An antibiotic (antibacterial that it is) will not be effective against a viral illness. A heartburn remedy will not treat a heart attack.

Supposing that the diagnosis of the physical ailment is correct, it may still be that an indicated remedy will not really work. This may be because the condition being treated is multifactoral (as most conditions are). A person with low thyroid may functionally  be low thyroid due to adrenal stress issues preventing the conversion of thyroid hormone to the active form. Treating the person with activated thyroid hormone in this case will agitate the person, while treating the adrenals will normalize thyroid function.  Lack of conversion may also be due to low iron, in which case supplementing with iron may restore thyroid function. It is a matter of treating the cause, rather than the effect.

In virtually all situations, the efficacy of a treatment is also contingent not only on physical world realities, but on causative emotional or mental states. Asthma sometimes fails to respond to a barrage of steroid inhalers, antihistamines, and what not. When we remember that asthma can also be thought of as "grief stored in the lungs", we find we can get better efficacy with resonant vibrational remedies such as the flower essence Yerba Santa, or with counseling or emotional freedom technique.

Moving from causative emotional states to causative mental states, one thing is clear. Belief systems play a huge role in whether or not a remedy will or will not really work for a person.  Our minds affect our bodies. Thoughts are remarkable in their power and influence every bodily process.

The placebo effect
Mistaken beliefs may create physical symptoms and prevent well chosen remedies from working. As an example, certain patients believe themselves to be very sensitive to any medication. In order to discern whether it is a medication or a belief that causes their troubles, a harmless remedy may be given. If the patient then reports a severe reaction, it is not to say that the patient is not experiencing what they think they are experiencing, but it is to say that the experience is through the effect of the mind on the body, not the effect of the remedy. This is the nocebo effect.

Conversely, patients given a placebo may report great benefit from a physiologically ineffective remedy or procedure. People who believe in their ability to heal and in their healers and in the methods or medicines the healer employs, tend to respond positively. People who do not, do not.

All of these factors condition whether or not remedies will really work in any given situation.

The Elegance of the Myers Cocktail

What do Brad Pitt, Madonna, Simon Cowel, Rihanna, Alan Cumming, Rita Ora, Kelly Osbourne,Jessa Hinton, Beyonce, Dr. Oz and many other athletes and celebrities have in common? The answer is that they all receive an amazing blend of intravenous (IV) nutrients called a "Myers Cocktail."

During the 1960s, Dr. John Myers, an internist from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, concluded that because of our digestive, absorptive, and detoxification systems, only a small fraction of the vitamins and minerals we take (either in food or in pills) were actually being absorbed into our bloodstream. He proposed that a safe mixture of key nutritional supplements might be given in a single intravenous infusion - literally flooding each cell in the body with nutrition.  Each of the vitamins and minerals Dr. Myers selected had actually been available in intravenous form for years, but no one had ever considered combining them into an intravenous "cocktail."  Here's the story...

Many patients take high quality and appropriate supplements and nutrients, yet still are not experiencing expected improvements.  To have a therapeutic effect, nutrients need to be adequately absorbed and delivered to the cell.  When nutrients are taken orally, the gastrointestinal track needs to break down foods and supplements to release the core nutrients, and transport those nutrients to the blood for delivery to the cells requiring them. This process is dependent on numerous physiological systems functioning properly, including optimal enzyme activity, proper acid production, healthy gut flora, healthy gastrointestinal lining free of inflammation and irritation, absence of "bad" bacteria, and others variables.

After the nutrients are broken down and transported to the blood, they are then delivered to the liver for filtering and detoxification before having opportunity to reach other cells in the body.  A compromised liver can make certain nutrients inactive, ineffective, or bound for excretion before given the opportunity to have therapeutic action in the body.

Furthermore, the therapeutic effect of many nutrients is only attained after reaching very high levels.  For example, vitamin C has been demonstrated to have an antiviral effect at high serum concentrations of 10-15 mg/dL. These levels are not achievable via oral route even in a healthy individual.  Even if we could achieve higher and higher serum concentrations from super dosing of vitamin C, disagreeable gastrointestinal side effects like diarrhea and nausea would be common.

Another factor hindering fast and significant improvement from healthy diet and supplementation is that by the time healthy regimens are implemented, the body may be so depleted that it needs a long time to "catch up." In addition, many people are basing adequate supplementation levels on the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) guidelines, which are levels intended to avoid deficiency induced diseases, but have little to do with levels promoting optimal health.  Therefore, most individuals are nutrient deficit, which requires even higher amounts and longer periods of time to "catch up.

Intravenous Nutrient Therapy (IVNT) delivers nutrients directly to the circulation and to the cells where the nutrients are needed.  In addition, whereas oral absorption may be 1-25%, IVNT provides 100% of nutrients delivered to be available to cells for repair and health.  This circumvents the problem of malabsorption, gastrointestinal disease, and liver dysfunction to allow the nutrients to have immediate and direct action promoting improved health and function.

Myers Cocktail Q & A

Why do an IV? Aren't we able to get the nutrients we need from our diets?

In a perfect world, this is true.  But the typical American diet is lacking in adequate nutrient content and even with a stellar diet, the nutrient quality in the foods has steadily declined.  Also, chemicals, toxins, stress, allergies, genetics, infections and other reasons, many people suffer from compromised gastrointestinal function. The result is impaired digestion, decreased capacity to break down foods and compromised ability to absorb the vital nutrients needed to just maintain health.

When nutrients are given intravenously, the digestive system is bypassed and nutrients are delivered directly into the cells. Each cell gets to bathe in a nutrient-dense solution, so that these vitamins are easily accessible, in the most bio-available form, allowing the greatest potential for healing and ENERGY.

Just what is a Myers cocktail?

The basic Myers' Cocktail, is an intravenous vitamin nutrient supplement that was formulated more than 40 years ago for promoting healing and restoring energy and stamina.  The standard Myers Cocktail at Pacific Naturopathic consists of magnesium, calcium, selenium, zinc, vitamin B-5 vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C. Other vitamins or ingredients may be added to the Myers' Cocktail protocol, depending on the patient's diagnosis and overall health as well as the condition being treated.

What is the Myers cocktail used for?

Please see next article

Have there been any studies on the Myers Cocktail?

Yes.  Yale researchers recently tested the Myers Cocktail on a group of patients in a double-bind, placebo controlled randomized trial. The study measured tender points, depression levels and quality of life. Significant improvement was shown in all pertinent outcome measures with the Myers' group and none with the placebo group. There are currently 274 clinical research trials employing intravenous micronutrient therapy. About half of these concern treatment or prevention of cancer.  The remainder cover a wide range of medical and health conditions.

How many treatments does it take to feel better?

Patients vary in the number of treatments needed, but a typical protocol is infusions once or twice a week. Some patients experience improvement after only one treatment, and many report significant healing by the fourth infusion. People who have chronic conditions may need ongoing treatment of several times per week, or periodically every few weeks to regain their energy.

How long does a Myers infusion take?

A typical Myers drip takes about 15 minutes.

Is It Safe?

The Myers Cocktail is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive therapy that is well tolerated by most people. It carries an extremely low risk of serious adverse side effects. If the protocol is administered quickly there may be a sensation of warmth and flushing. This is due to the rapid rise of magnesium. Some patients may also have the taste of vitamins in their mouth shortly after they are given the infusion.

Is there any preparation needed before receiving a Myers?

Before your treatment: It is best to prepare for the Myers' by drinking plenty of water and having food in your stomach before you come in the office.

Is a Myers Cocktail right for me?

At Pacific Naturopathic, we provide comprehensive holistic medical care, including thorough evaluation of each patient's symptoms, health, and needs.  During our evaluation, we can determine if IV therapy will be beneficial to your health goals.  After consultation, we can schedule IV treatments to be performed in the office on the same dayby one of our fully trained and certified Naturopathic Doctors.

The Myers Cocktail --
What Conditions is it Used For?

Some of the conditions that may be improved with Myers' Cocktail:

* Acute viral illness/colds
* Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with or without Epstein-Barr virus
* General immune system boosting
* Intestinal malabsorption
* Vitamin/mineral deficiency
* Chronic depression
* Vitamin B12/folic acid anemia
* Acute or chronic muscle spasms and cramps
* Fibromyalgia
* Migraine headaches- often within minutes
* Tension headaches
* Narcotic withdrawal
* Seasonal allergic rhinitis
* Respiratory problems
* Acute of chronic asthma
* Sinusitis
* Allergies
* Anxiety and insomnia
* Cancer support

It is especially useful in situations where oral nutrients or other therapies are not working. When nutrients are given intravenously, your digestive system is bypassed and a much higher level of nutrition can be delivered directly to your cells via the bloodstream.

If you tend to be anxious or overstressed, it can help to calm and relax you. If you tend to have fatigue and feel run down, it can help boost your energy.  There are so many diseases and symptoms that benefit from this therapy.

It is like getting a supercharge of vitality!

Simple, Effective, Naturopathic Remedies

Simply put, a remedy really works if it does what it is supposed to do (which is not necessarily the same thing as doing what a person wants it to do).  Whereas remedies most often work for some people and not for others (see Musings above for reasons why this is so) a remedy that really works should have predictable and reproducible effects, for the most part regardless of the person's mental and emotional conditioning.

In search of such remedies, I find that I invariably return to my naturopathic roots. From the gross physical level, where cold contracts and heat expands, to the stratosphere of energy medicine, naturopathy offers tried and true, often quite simple remedies.

Castor Oil Packs are an example. An organic cotton or wool flannel cloth, saturated with cod liver oil, is warmed and placed over the liver. The heat of the pack dilates the blood vessels, increasing the circulation of blood and lymph, and fires the enzymatic processes in the liver, all of which are driven by heat. The pack, in this way, promotes liver function and facilitates detoxification. There is no way that it can not. This remedy is used as part of a treatment regime in ailments ranging from anxiety to uterine fibroids.

Dew Walking is another naturopathic favorite. Dew Walking is simply walking barefoot on the dewey grass in the morning. Walking barefoot strengthens the feet and the calf muscles and stimulates acupressure points in the feet. Pressure on these points reflexively strengthens body organs. The chilly wetness of the grass causes vasoconstriction, and a rebound vasodilation when the feet are dried. In addition to supporting the immune system, dew walking offers the innumerable benefits of "earthing" or "grounding"

A third simple and effective remedy is the use of infrared sauna to c in sauna release toxins stored in deep body tissues. As the person sweats, toxins are safely eliminated through the skin, the body's largest organ of elimination. Other benefits accrue through the predictable response of body systems to the heat and sweating.

Moving on to energy medicine, whether one chooses to call it vix medicatrix naturae or the healing power of nature (as it is called in naturopathy) or whether one calls it conscious cosmic energy, there is a vibrational force which underlies and animates all physical form. For an energy remedy to work, it must either resonate with the vibrational characteristics of the vital force, balance the intensity of the force, or remove blockages such that the energy can flow freely.

Breath practices are a fundamental practice in energy medicine, requiring nothing other than the breath itself. My favorite is the deceptively simple practice of 10 conscious breaths. Done properly, this breathing will balance your sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system, normalizing systems under autonomic control. A balanced nervous system will lower your blood pressure, optimize your digestion, quell anxiety, guide you into meditation. To do the breathing, sit with your spine straight. (Energy flows better that way).  Not controlling the breath, observe the breath, breathing in through your nose and allowing the breath to escape through your mouth. Enjoy the deepening feel of stillness.

This is a remedy that really works!

Remedies That Really Work!
When More Than One May Be Needed

Have you ever been in some type of pain for an extended period of time?

Many people that come to see me have had that unfortunate experience. My job is to put an end to pain, once and for all.

When I begin to examine my client, what I often find is more than one cause for the constant ongoing pain. In fact, there is commonly two very distinct causes.

The first is mechanical. Mechanical means that there are bones out of place, not articulating properly. These are generally some permutation of dislocations ranging from very mild to very dislocated and often jammed and unable to move within the orbit of their normal pathways.

The second cause is metabolic. Metabolic means that there is some type of tissue involvement caused by a problem in the body chemistry. Metabolic may be further broken down into several categories to better understand how a metabolic problem may present itself in the body.

1. When there is a certain nutritional element that is too low for normal functioning of a very specific chemical pathway, then fibrin can build up in the healthy fascia and produce hardened tissue. This is called fibromyalgia when it occurs.

2. When the body cannot process certain materials: an overabundance of indigestible calcium, excess lactic and uric acid, excess sodium and undigested animal proteins, then the presentation of this effect is calculi arthritis. This commonly produces hard deposits in joints and may also appear as bone spurs.

3. When the body is engaged in an autoimmune response, then there is often a high amount of non-specific inflammation globally in the body. This may manifest in a number of ways, depending upon one's specific DNA according to current scientific investigation.

In my first couple of years at Pacific Naturopathic, I found that for many of my clients, the above was true. They had both a mechanical problem, and simultaneously a metabolic problem.

You could treat one of them, but because there was still another cause that was untreated, a full recovery was just not possible.

 This led to a new generation of herbal formulas that I began to design that took years to research and develop. As a result, at Pacific Naturopathic, we are able to help many of our clients to achieve a pain free life working with both the mechanical and the metabolic sides of healing.

 I often begin with the form of bodywork called Freeing or Rapid Pain Elimination (RPE) that I developed. Freeing is able to set the bones in the body so gently that many people fall asleep on my table. I specialize in all parts of the skeletal system and have also developed the capacity to reset the attachment sites of the body, bringing them back to a neutral positioning, pain free and no longer twisted, torqued and tight and painful.

Over the years I have developed all-herbal formulas that aid in:

1. Ending fibromyalgia by bringing the missing nutrient back into the metabolic chain of the body. This normalizes the chemical pathways and as a result, the body then begins to reabsorb the hardened exudated fibrinous tissue all on its own as a result of the metabolism being restored to its natural structure. The formula, Fibro-Ease received a US Patent, and a video is available about Fibro Ease online.

2. Reabsorbing the hardened arthritic deposits by once again restoring the chemical pathways. The formula, Arthritis-Ease, breaks down the hardened arthritic deposits by dismantling them and exuding the separated particles through a normal elimination pathway.

3. Calming down the autoimmune inflammatory response by recreating proper cell permeability with an herbal formula called, Cell-Ease. This lessens the inflammatory response by allowing the cell to be able to exchange properly.

So, if you are in pain, and nothing has helped, then you may be experiencing two conditions going on at the same time.

 At Pacific Naturopathic, we specialize in both-mechanical and metabolic conditions that combine to cause you not to have the pain free life that you deserve.

EFT - A Remedy
That's With You Everywhere

Jane 2013

Sometimes I feel that my talks about EFT Tapping sound like the snake oil remedies of old. How can one (very odd) technique effect so many positive results? How can this one thing lessen acute anxiety, stop smoking, help you sleep all night, lessen pain and, well, just about everything?

The evidence is piling up as more and more science is applied to test the successful efficacy of EFT.

Imagine having a technique wherever you go that you can pull out to help yourself and others when needed. It has been found to work when other remedies have failed.

EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique  is a meridian tapping technique. There are others but none so easy and elegant. It's the first thing I teach my clients and they leave after the first session with a powerful remedy that is theirs forever.

How EFT works is by tapping on acupuncture meridians while verbally focusing on the problem/emotion until we feel the negative energy clear. What we are doing is clearing blocked energy which might be affecting us physically or emotionally or both.

 Dramatic events in our lives, like trauma, are full of strong negative emotions. They are difficult to process so we cope by stuffing them. We pretend they are not there or that we are over them. That is what happens when someone suffers from PTSD.  The memory of the trauma gets triggered into awareness and the pain of the past returns in full force.

And it isn't just big T traumas which continue to haunt us, it is also what might be considered small t traumas. I was accidentally put on the second grade line on my first day of primary school and it became a small t trauma because I really belonged on the first grade line. It wasn't noticed until I started crying because I couldn't do anything that the other kids were doing. I became a life-long overachiever and perfectionist - conditions I have come to grips with using Tapping.

EFT acknowledges negative feelings, pushes them through and allows the free flow of energy.

During the tapping session we are able to notice the feeling as it grows weaker and changes during the process. It becomes clear that we are not under the control of the emotion and so it is easier to let it go.

Here's the amazing part, an EFT tapping session takes only a few minutes and almost always provides relief. You know how your own self-talk can be so destructive and cruel - well, that is exactly what you tap on. Tap it down and get it out. It's really not true anymore so why keep it going?

On average, EFT newbies have a 50% success rate but it gets better the more you do it...you know, like baseball or playing the piano. Except it doesn't take years to master it.

EFT Tapping is now used by millions of people all over the world and there's no reason that you can't be one of them.

Remedies That Really Work:
Where's the Proof?

Brad West, N.D.

Many treatments and remedies are validated to work clinically, or simply known to be effective to us all.  Among these remedies are aspirin for pain, inflammation and fever. But most remedies have never been "proven" by the current scientific gold standard of a double blind placebo-controlled trial, and yet they are used daily in modern medicine.

Even those remedies that pass clinical trials are often fraught with fraud or poor research and not effective at nor designed to treat the cause or to reverse an illness. Another often missed or forgotten fact is that virtually no long-term studies are done on any natural or conventional drugs or treatments.

Evidence-based medicine is a term thrown around loosely, sometimes, to bolster one side of an argument for the conventional or the natural side. And, Interestingly, some estimates of actual scientifically proven evidence for most drugs and conventional treatments are as low as 10 to 20 percent.

This evidence being based on the double-blind placebo controlled trial as a gold standard is often a biased model and not scientific. For instance, how would you do a study like this on commonsense remedies like putting out fire with water or using a Neti pot to rinse your sinuses or more conventionally, identifying the silver bullet or single set of molecules that "work" when nature is a dynamic and complex system that utilizes synergy.

This reductionistic model has shown to be a failure and yet is still often cited as scientific and the gold standard. Natural medicine experts and those that study nature and true science have long identified this problem and embraced the synergy model.

Further, the placebo and nocebo effects are quite well established and by far the most effective treatments ever discovered. Not really a treatment, but more of a mindset and different then the synergy effect of natural healing, placebo and nocebo effects have long been a thorn in the side of conventional drug-based science. And yet we know what you think and feel is the most important part of health and healing. So, we must be careful with what we think and how we feel on a daily basis if we intend to have vibrant health or recover from a chronic or serious illness.

A remedy that truly "works" is knowing more about yourself, your tendencies and the information we take as fact or the gold standard. For a wonderful and deeper look into this area see "Mind Over Medicine" by Liisa Rankin, MD and other works by authors such as Bruce Lipton, PhD and Candace Pert, PhD.

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- it's all about energy radiating from breast tissue -

thermography

Two things come to mind when considering what remedies really work to   reduce incidents of developing breast cancer:

The first is that promoting a change in physiology is much more likely to be successful than waiting until the physiologic change has created an anatomic change (like a tumor), and then trying to do something about it.

Sequential thermography readings allow us to follow developing physiologic change and to assess whether therapeutic interventions are successful. Mammograms can only tell us that there has already been an anatomic change.

The second is that the physiologic change must be addressed through the  underlying cause or causes. Those causes might include imbalanced estrogen and/or progesterone, errors in estrogen metabolism, deficiency of iodine, intake of inflammatory foods, lymphatic congestion such as that resulting from tight underwire bras, toxicity of some sort, trauma to the breast, emotional turbulence, or a multitude of other causes.

If these causes are successfully addressed, high thermal risk ratings on the breast thermography exam will respond, and there will be a corresponding reduced risk of developing breast cancer.

Taking time to relax, recharge and rejuvenate
is a remedy that really works for stress related conditions.

Europeans seemingly have a far greater appreciation for the benefits and the necessity of taking time off for this purpose. We see this in the Spanish custom of closing down shops at mid-day, in the shorter than American work hours throughout Europe,  in the weeks of vacation time Europeans annually spend bathing in the sun and the water on Mediterranean beaches.

Guests at Pacific Naturopathic Retreat Center almost invariably report that even a few days of rest and relaxation in the magic of the Hawaiian islands recharges them, readies them for their next step in life, sometimes transforms their lives. (A number of prior retreat center guests now reside in Hawaii.)

What We Offer at the Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that
our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including
intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

 Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches helpreduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

 The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

About five billion dollars are spent annually on cancer research.  In the United Staes alone, there are more than 260 nonprofit organizations that have dedicated themselves to cancer -- more than the number established for heart disease, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, and stroke combined.

With this amazing investment of money, resources and people, why are the cancer rates increasing?

David Chan, MD, Oncologist, is one of the many cancer specialists who don't see results from the many billions of dollars spent over the years on cancer research.

Dr. Chan says, "I'll be the first to admit that despite all the billions put into cancer research, the end results of preventing cancer and treating advanced cancer have been disappointing."

Here's the story:  Medical historian Hans Ruesch says, "Despite the general recognition that 85 per cent of all cancers is caused by environmental influences, less than 10 per cent of the (U.S.) National Cancer Institute budget is given to environmental causes. And despite the recognition that the majority of environmental causes are linked to nutrition, less than 1 per cent of the National Cancer Institute budget is devoted to nutrition studies. And even that small amount had to be forced on the Institute by a special amendment of the National Cancer Act in 1974."

Simply put, prevention is not profitable in a capitalist economic system --  in our culture, treating disease is enormously profitable, preventing it is not. So all cancer research in America is geared to developing drugs and procedures that will fill the coffers of the industrial medical complex.

Finding a simple and elegant cure to cancer will put thousands of researchers out of jobs and create an economic crisis.  Sad, but true.

Beyond Conventional Oncology
in Treating Cancer

A recent study by the University of California, San Francisco, shows that an overwhelming majority - 95 percent - of cancer patients now want to incorporate these complimentary treatments into a comprehensive approach to their overall cancer care.

While patients have sought this integrative approach for some time, the general medical community has been slower to adopt it. There was a perception that there was insufficient scientific data to support integrative services, and there was a perception that patients and their families would pursue these treatments on their own.

Dr. Marcel comments:  Adjunctive cancer care goes beyond conventional oncology - beyond surgery, chemotherapy and radiation - in order to manage the side effects traditional treatment may cause cancer patients. At the Hernandez Center, adjunctive treatments include nutrition counseling, herbal medicine, mind/body medicine, intravenous Vitamin C and more. Furthermore, the patients receiving adjunctive care have longer, healthier lives than those receiving only conventional care.

Experts Believe Lifestyle Changes, Public Health Efforts Responsible for Decrease in Cancer Deaths

The American Cancer Society's recent report of a 23-percent decline in the cancer death rate since 1991 can partially be attributed to public health efforts, social change and public policies, such as the abundance of nonsmoking spaces and the tobacco sales tax, Virginia Commonwealth University experts say.

Additionally, an emphasis on other lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, helps curb cancer deaths and other leading causes of death such as heart disease and diabetes. And although 2014 government figures show cancer as the leading cause of death in 21 states including Virginia, increased awareness, research and treatment in low-income and disadvantaged populations will hopefully continue the statistical decline, officials said.

Dr. Marcel comments:  Lifestyle is related to cancer incidence and survival?  What a novel idea! They needed to invest money in a study to determine this?  What we have offered for 25 years in practice are strategies to prevent the onset of chronic illness and non-invasive, effective, evidence-based treatment strategies for cancer and other serious illnesses should the need arise.

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center

Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. We are often using this therapy at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients. What people may not know is that we also have many other IV therapies that are also very helpful in supporting our cancer patients depending on their symptoms and what they need.

We often give a nutrient IV in between IV vitamin C sessions.  This helps to provide more energy and rebuild our patients who may be feeling fatigued or have low blood counts.

We also have other anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer therapies like IV curcumin (turmeric) or IV silibinin (from milk thistle).

Another IV treatment that can help cancer patients from losing more weight or to help them gain weight is an infusion that includes a variety of amino acids.

These are just a few of the protocols we have for our cancer patients. For more information or to set up an appointment, please contact us at the Hernandez Center at (650) 917-1121.
