Greetings!

It is always amusing and revelatory to see what our writers come up with when given the monthly theme.  For this month, we chose "Energy."  We never prompt, suggest or guide our writers in any way.  Just ponder for a moment the places where your own mind goes when you see the word ENERGY. Here are the places in consciousness your Pacific Naturopathic healing team went:

Dr. Connie writes of human's energetic potential and gives practical exercises for energetic enhancement and follows up with a discussion on the energetics of different body tissues; Dr. Marcel writes on how energy can be transmitted from one being to another; Elaine Kahn writes on being in tune with who we really are; Jane Hernandez explains how energy permeates every aspect of existence; and Lauren Hoover-West offers a recipe for making a yummy, energy-boosting broth.

This month we welcome Dr. Sage Lynn Siemon to our practice.  Dr. Sage will be working in the IV center and we'll formally introduce her in the next issue of the newsletter.

Be Well.

Dr. Connie, Dr. Marcel, Dr. Brad and your health care team at Pacific Naturopathic and the

Dr. Connie's Musings...
Dr. Connie basks in elemental energy -- the pure air, sparkling light
and rich colors at our Hawaii retreat.

Beings of Infinite Energy

Naturopathic Medicine identifies the  "Healing Power of Nature" or "Vix Medicatrix Naturae" as the source of healing. In the works of spiritual masters and healers of all disciplines, a multitude of words are used to describe that energy that animates us, patterns our being, connects us with the universal source. We are beings of infinite energy. Pain, disease and lack of energy result when the energy that is the essence of who we are is blocked.

Personally, I have been blessed for most of my life with access to energy. Napping is not something to which I have ever been drawn.  Part of it is luck of the draw... good genes, a healthy constitution, a natural desire for health promoting foods, a lack of desire for sugar and other inflammatory foods, and strength of will. Any temporary bout of low energy (bouts which occur somewhat more frequently as I age) is puzzling to me, a condition I try to address immediately.

I'd like to share what I have found to be the most useful in accessing the energy which is our birthright as human beings. It helps me to have words that describe that energy....whether life force, prana, the Word.  I favor  "conscious cosmic energy," one of the phrases introduced to me in the writings of the great guru Paramahansa Yogananda. Contemplating this phrase, I remember and believe in the intelligence and power of the energy that runs through our beings.

Mentally engaged, I then utilize an affirmation that helps me touch in to the unlimited power we each have at our disposal. While simple repetition of an affirmation serves as a reminder, affirmations are imbued when power when they are repeated with focused concentration, determination and will.  The affirmation that I use, again from Swami Yogananda, is as follows:

"Within me lies the energy to accomplish all that I will to do. Behind my every act is God's Infinite Power. "

O Infinite Spirit,Recharge my body with Thy cosmic energy,My mind with Thy concentration,My soul with Thy ever-new joy.O eternal youth of body and mind,Abide in me forever and forever.
Next for me are the "Energization Exercises," Yogananda's set of 37 exercises that provide the opportunity to consciously direct that infinite energy to each individual body part. (You may have seen the Energization Exercise poster displayed on the inside of the Pacific Naturopathic entrance door. Click HERE for more information.) Practiced properly, these exercises are said to conquer every ill of body, mind and spirit.

(Note: Other breath/movement/consciousness exercises such as are taught in yoga, chi kung or tai chi could provide similar benefit.)

Another practice that increases energy is the willingness to accept the moment as it is, to say "yes" to life. Resistance to what is, and other emotions that take us out of the present moment (such as fear, jealousy or anger) sap energy. Many people who believe they have no energy simply have inappropriately directed their energy to these emotions.

Emotional freedom technique (see Jane Hernandez's articles in this newsletter and previous issues) is one way to free emotional energy. Read my next article, below, for physiologic conditions that we consider when energy is low, and for other treatments which may be of use in freeing, restoring and increasing energy.

Energy is Contagious

Imagine this:
You are a worker in an office with 5 other people.  One morning, one of the workers is late.  When they finally arrive, they enter uttering an expletive, slamming their briefcase on their desk and kicking the metal trashcan so that it caroms noisily off the side of the desk.  There are various responses from your co-workers - one person tries to console the upset person.  Another worker escapes to the water cooler in another room.  Another worker lowers their head to the desk, pretending to just be so involved in their work they do not notice the disruption - and so on.  The distraught worker created an overwhelming, negative energetic disturbance in the office, and other workers, caught up in the energy, responded in their own, unique ways.  Energy is contagious.

Here's another story.  Dolphins are naturally socially well adjusted.  In a classic experiment performed a number of years ago (you couldn't get away with this now) on dolphins in captivity, scientists separated a dolphin from his pod buddies.  Once separated, the scientists jumbled the dolphins regular schedule - erratic feeding times, irregular periods of light and darkness, deprivation of social contact - and the lone dolphin began showing signs of neurotic behavior.  After a while, the neurotic dolphin was reunited with the pod.  Almost immediately other pod members started exhibiting the same behavior patterns as the lone dolphin.  Energy is contagious.

The "rest of the story" is that positive energy is just as contagious as negative energy, perhaps even more so.  When Dr. Connie and I lived in Japan, we operated a spiritual center where we held weekly gatherings.  People from all over the world, including many Japanese, would come to our house to interact on a high energetic level.  One American, married to a lovely Japanese woman, could not keep negative thoughts about everything, especially the Japanese, from escaping through his mouth.  Dr. Connie and I decided that for every negative utterance he made, we would gently rebut it with a positive expression.  After several go-rounds, this man broke down in tears.  He tuned in to the energetic disturbance he was creating around him.  Energy is contagious.  Positive energy is more powerful than negative energy.

For many of us, staying consistently in positive expression has become our life's work.  Many of the folks Dr. Connie and I pal around with might put it a different way - that our work in this lifetime involves expression from our highest vision - what we know to be true -- in our every moment of consciousness.  Self-Realization.  We are conscious that we become like the people we choose to have around us, so we choose carefully with whom we spend free time with.

The final story of the powerful effects of positive energy is your own.  Think of a time when you were uplifted in another person's presence; when you felt joy flowing through you; when you wished the moment would never end.  It hasn't ended.  That energy is in every one of us and living eternally in that moment is our quest.

Energy: Part Two

Perhaps the most common complaints we hear from patients at our clinic is that they lack energy. The cause of low energy is multifactoral. We might think of fatigue as originating in the body, in the mind, or in the spirit, though in fact these are not separate one from the other. When your body is damaged by an accident, your energy will be low. When your mind is full of distaste for what it is you are doing, your energy will be low. When you are not connected with the infinite source of energy, your energy will be low.

The endocrine system is the system most closely linked to the energy vortices and channels which underlie the physical form of our bodies. It's not a surprise then, that when the adrenals are stressed or depleted, or when the thyroid is functioning at a low level, or when the ovarian or testicular hormones have begun to wane, that we would feel fatigue until those imbalances are addressed.

The endocrine system is also closely connected with the neurologic system. Neurotransmitters affect our emotional state of being. Fear, anxiety and depression both have a physiologic base in our biochemistry and also can cause detrimental physiologic change. As I mentioned above in the musings, unresolved emotions deplete energy. It takes a lot of energy to be at war with the outer world or with one's inner world.

All the organ systems and tissues of our bodies, down to a cellular level, even to the mitochondria of our cells and our genetic blueprints, are affected by the neuroendocrine system.  Chaos ensues when this system is imbalanced or defective. The cardiovascular delivery system may be impaired. The respiratory system may not be able to take in enough oxygen. When tissues are starved of oxygen or other nutrients in this way, our bodies cannot function optimally, and our energy is depleted.

Tissues may be starved through external as well as internal factors. Perhaps we are simply not breathing properly or not taking in appropriate nutrients. Perhaps we are breathing or otherwise taking in toxins that poison or disrupt our cellular functioning. Or perhaps we are subject to a microbial infestation, whether fungal, viral or bacterial.  Any of these causative factors make for fatigue.

With so many factors, we find that understanding the cause of a given person's fatigue may involve anything from microscopic intracellular nutrient testing to a macroscopic analysis of the environmental, mental, emotional or spiritual situation of the person lacking energy.

Treatment may involve energy medicines. These medicines are most effective in so far as they have a vibratory frequency resonant with the person or organism being treated. Energy medicines include homeopathy, flower essences, acupuncture, therapies of color, sound, and light.

Treatment may also involve just about anything from the naturopathic armentarium... counseling, lifestyle change, hard or soft tissue adjustment, nutrients, plant medicines, glandulars,  bioidentical hormones, or, in some cases, conventional medicines. It would be rare for there to be a single intervention that would solve a person's lack of energy. And it would also be rare if there were not something that could make a significant difference. It takes comprehensive evaluation, a willingness to make small and large changes, and the courage to do so.

Energetic Alignment With Our Authentic Selves

Elaine Kahn

When people are asked about their energy, the most common response is either they have a lot of energy or lack thereof. However, it is not only the amount of energy, but the kind of energy we bring into situations that affect the outcome of our efforts.

You may be making an effort to smile, but if deep inside you are sad or depressed, people will feel the energy you are carrying. You cannot hide your energy behind a smile. When you go to a meeting with a defeated energy, you don't stand a chance of succeeding in your petitions. When crafting a vision for your future, if deep inside you are carrying a critical energy towards it, you may find it hard to carry out your vision with openness and excitement.

Oftentimes when our energy does not match our intended actions, it means we are not aligned with our authentic self. If you feel restricted from your true potential, it is wise to look to the authenticity of your relationship (with yourself and with the outside world) for ways to free yourself from such restrictions. For it is only when we are truly aligned with our authentic self that we can create the intended results and realities we wish to sustain  in our life.

How do we know when we are getting closer to our authentic self? A lot of times, our energy can give us some indication. When we are doing the things we like, our energy will be lighter and free-flowing.

Through coaching and energy work, I help clients clear away the concerns that may be causing them to hold on to unwanted or stagnant energy. Imagine a life where every conscious intention you have is possible, be it getting that promotion, or finally quitting your job so you can follow your passion. Let's tap into our authentic selves and put the right energy behind it and make it happen, together.

Everything is Energy!

Jane 2013
Right now touch the screen of the device you are reading this on. OK, now run your hands around the frame...it feels solid, doesn't it?  What if I told you that what you are touching is just energy and not solid at all?

What if I told you that your whole body is not solid but made up of spinning vortices of energy down to the smallest atomic particle?

Quantum physicists have proved this time and again. After all, it was Albert Einstein who famously said:"Concerning matter, we have been all wrong. What we have called matter is energy, whose vibration has been so lowered as to be perceptible to the senses. There is no matter."

Nicola Tesla added, "'If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration." Wow.

So what does all this mean?

The truth is that we are beings of energy and vibration and not just these solid bodies that we see in the mirror. Our feelings, thoughts and emotions play a vital role in affecting that vibrating energy.  So much manifests in your life because it matches the vibration which goes through your mind.

When we create a peaceful loving state inside, it positively impacts our health, the world around us, and the energy others feel from us.

And when we get bogged down in negative thoughts, those too are communicated all over the place.

So, you may be thinking, that's all well and good but I've got some big problems in my life that make feeling positive a difficult task. OK, that's valid, but just consider taking a new perspective that might just begin to shift things.

I'd like to offer some ideas about changing your perspective no matter what is
Everything is energy!
happening in your current life.  Yes, it requires some effort but things won't change without you taking control and changing how you look at your life and it's daily challenges. Consider it an adventure.

Firstly, I'd direct you to meditation - it's a path that, for thousands of years, has led so many to deep wisdom about themselves. It's hard to do? Not really. I would be happy to point out some tried and true easy ways to help harness your monkey mind. The best part is that you can do it at home for as long or short as fits into your life.

Or you might like yoga, qigong or tai chi - also great for your body. Sustaining a practice in any of these will certainly change your internal vibration. What I teach, EFT and Hypnosis, are tools which can also bring you deeper into self-knowledge and letting go of old demons.

So, you have some good choices here which can help lead you out of fixed behavior into expansion and discovery.

Everything is energy so that is why you don't have to accept limits.  We are always communicating through our thoughts, and the messages we generate are the most important aspect of our being because of the promise and potential we can attract.

Basic Broth Making

Lauren Hoover-West

I make this in the crockpot: put everything in the crockpot and fill it up to top with cold water, and turn it on high and cook for 24-36 hours.

Pressure Cooker Method: cook on low pressure for 1 1/2 hours.

For Vegan/Veggie: Use a variety of non-cruciferous veggies with ingredients below in #4 and only cook on stove top(Bring to boil and then simmer covered 1 hour).

1. Organic/Pasture Raised Bones:poultry, fish, shellfish, bison, beef or lamb
  • cooked bones from a previous meal, with or without skin or meat
  • raw bones, with or without skin and meat (can be browned first for flavor)
  • use a whole carcass or just parts
  • feet, ribs, necks and knuckles
2. Water: cold, filtered or bottled, enough to just cover the bones by 2 inches if it will fit in your pot.

3. Vinegar:1 tsp. apple cider or coconut

4. Vegetables: 2-3 stalks celery, 2 carrots, 1 onion(quartered) and or 1-2 leeks, 1-2 cloves whole garlic, 4 sprigs thyme, 1-2 tsp. sea salt, 1 tsp. whole peppercorns and 1 bunch parsley and or cilantro. I add 1 bunch dandelion greens, handful chard stems and a few-1/3 cup mushroom stems. Use what you have.

Directions:

1.Put everything in a large crockpot or pressure cooker or stock/soup pot.
2.Cover everything with cold water.
3.Bring to a rolling boil over high heat.
4.Over low heat, cover and Simmer 8-36 hrs for chicken, 12-72 hrs for beef/red meat, the longer the better (24 hrs is ideal).
5.Strain through a colander and discard everything except the broth. If your want to use the meat, you must take it out after a few hours of cooking when it is fully cooked or it will be very dry and have no flavor.

If you wish to remove the fat, skim the fat off the top once refrigerated.
Broth may be frozen for months, or kept in the refrigerator for about 5 days.

To Use:

1. Soup - Make soup by adding vegetables, beans, grains or meat to broth. Briefly cook vegetables and meat. Add broth and grains or previously soaked beans. Season with salt and pepper or other spices.

2. Cooking Liquid - Use broth in place of water to cook rice, beans or other grains.

3. Gravy - Use fat from broth or oil in a skillet, and add any gluten-free flour, one tablespoon at a time and whisk constantly till browned. Whisk in broth and cook till thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Sipping Tea - Don't forget you can sip broth like tea. This is especially nice in the winter months or if you're feeling sick. Since broth is simultaneously energizing and calming, it can take the place of morning coffee, afternoon tea, or evening nightcap. Try it in a thermos and sip throughout the day. Of course, the most traditional use for seasoned broth is as a first course, to enhance the digestion of any meal to come.

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- it's all about energy radiating from breast tissue -

thermography

In determining thermal risk ratings, we compare temperatures at numerous points on both breasts. At each point, there is a range of temperature variation.

We are alerted when a temperature is outside a normal range at any point, and more alerted when several temperatures are out of range. An increased temperature differential indicates that there is some kind of a process taking place in the hotter breast. The heat may represent injury, infection, inflammation or abnormal cell growth.

When heat is accompanied by abnormal vasculature, we are further alerted. We may advise a patient with this situation to follow a breast health protocol for three months and retest before moving on to anatomic imaging (mammography or ultrasound) or we may advise more immediate further imaging or even breast biopsy. The course of action is dependent on patient signs, symptoms and history.

What We Offer at the Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that
our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including
intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches helpreduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure, although we are definitely open to miracles, but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity and understanding, for however long that may be.

Link between obesity, increased risk of colorectal cancer revealed

Obesity has long been associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer, but the link has never been understood. Now, a research team led by investigators at Thomas Jefferson University has revealed the biological connection, and in the process, has identified an approved drug that might prevent development of the cancer. Their study is published in Cancer Research.

In mice, investigators found that a high caloric diet turned off expression of a key hormone in the intestine, which led to deactivation of a tumor suppressor pathway. Genetic replacement of that hormone turned the tumor suppressor back on and prevented cancer development -- even when mice continued to eat excess calories.

Dr. Marcel comments:  Obesity and excess calorie intake are associated with a large number of chronic system breakdowns.  The fear with this new information is that replacement of the hormone will decrease the incidence of colorectal cancer and give overweight folks an "out" from doing something about their condition.

Could low vitamin D
increase the risk of leukemia?

Many cases of leukemia across the globe may be caused by vitamin D deficiency as a result of low sunlight exposure. This is the conclusion of a new study published in PLOS One.

While scientists are still unsure of the exact causes of leukemia, genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role.

While vitamin D is found in some foods, including oily fish, cheese and egg yolks, it is present in small amounts. The body's best source of vitamin D is sunlight; ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun penetrates bare skin, inducing vitamin D synthesis.

The researchers found that individuals living in countries farther away from the equator, such as the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland, were at least twice as likely to have leukemia as people living in countries closes to the equator, such as Nigeria, Bolivia, Samoa and Madagascar.

The team explains that individuals who live farther away from the equator are exposed to solar energy that has traveled farther through the Earth's atmosphere, which reduces the amount of UVB radiation that reaches the skin.

Dr. Marcel comments:  I do find this research quite interesting in that every single cancer patient that enters our clinic has low levels of Vitamin D when we first test them. Also interesting is that even patients who spend a lot of time outdoors have low Vitamin D levels.  So here in the San Francisco area at 37.78 degrees latitude, we need to maintain an awareness of keeping our Vitamin D levels high through sun exposure, appropriate nutrition and supplements.

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center

Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. We are often using this therapy at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients. What people may not know is that we also have many other IV therapies that are also very helpful in supporting our cancer patients depending on their symptoms and what they need.

We often give a nutrient IV in between IV vitamin C sessions, which helps to provide more energy and rebuild our patients that may be feeling fatigued or have low blood counts.

We also have other anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer therapies like IV curcumin (turmeric) or IV silibinin (from milk thistle).

Another IV treatment that can help cancer patients from losing more weight or to help them gain weight is an infusion that includes a variety of amino acids.

These are just a few of the protocols we have for our cancer patients. For more information or to set up an appointment, please contact us at the Hernandez Center at (650) 917-1121.
