The Therapeutic Approach at Pacific Naturopathic: Eclectic, Personalized, Effective. No Cookbooks Here!
also, celebrating four years of Pacific Naturopathic Newsletters
Greetings!
This is our 48th Pacific Naturopathic Newsletter -- four years of monthly epublishing. We must be doing OK because the national average open rate for newsletters is about 20 percent and our open rate is always greater than 40 percent. We LOVE hearing from our readers, so please feel free to comment on articles or suggest areas that you think we might address in this Newsletter.
This month's newsletter didn't have a focused theme, its eclecticism manages to weave a strange integration anyway.
Dr. Connie reminds readers that naturopathic medicine is not "one size fits all;" rather, it is always personalized. Dr. Connie also writes about the mouth-body connection, and recounts her experience in the strange world of the "sinus lift."
Dr. Corrine writes about the thyroid and inability to lose weight, and Dr.Vivek brings us up to date with events in his world offers us an opportunity to experience an Ayurvedic weight loss program.
Dr. Marcel veers away from the I.V.s, fingernails, tongues and prostates he's been writing about and takes us on a journey to the Reservoir.
Jane Hernandez (catchy surname), CCHT, writes on how hypnotherapy can help reprogram the concepts which are limiting our experience of life and personal health.
The clinic is open M-F 9am-5pm. The clinic is closed for lunch daily from 12:00 to 1:30 PM

We Love Cookbooks,
But Not In Medicine
Folks at the front desk have learned to smile and politely suggest that patients schedule an appointment when they hear the following words. "Just a quick question for Dr. Connie. My doctor says I should (fill in the blank) for my (fill in the blank). Does she recommend that I do that?"
Naturopathic medicine, as we often say, is not cookbook medicine. Our suggestions to our patients depend on the cause and severity of the condition, the lifestyle of the patient, co-existing conditions, patient treatment preferences, and much, much more. Our interests are in education and prevention of further disease, as well as in treatment.
A recurrent example is that of osteopenia or osteoporosis. "My doctor says I have osteponia, and tells me I should take 1200 mg of supplemental calcium a day. Do you think I should do that?" For starters, we would treat mild osteopenia in a newly menopausal woman with no family history in quite a different way than osteopenia bordering on osteoporosis in a woman whose mother has had multiple osteoporosis related vertebral fractures.
In either case, we would want to know about diet, exercise, current medications, supplementation, lab values for nutrients such as Vitamin D, percentage of bone loss over the last two to three years. In the case of a woman with significant personal or family history of bone loss, we would be interested in genomic testing to reveal potential underlying variables which could lead us to more effective treatment. In both cases, we might decide to do functional bone loss testing (a urine test) to determine whether or not the patient is currently losing bone.
The Latin root for doctor "docere" means "to teach." Because we are not in the conventional system in which office visits of 5 to 10 minutes have to suffice, we are able to take the time to get to know our individual patients and their circumstances, and to teach them what their diagnosis means, how to care for themselves, and why we suggest what we suggest. Thus we generally have visits of 30 to 60 minutes, and answering those "quick questions" entails much more than a simple yes or no answer.
Readers of a certain age may remember the Human Potential Movement that began in the 1960s. The Movement espoused the philosophy that within each of us exists a huge, untapped Reservoir of expansive powers and extraordinary skills. The more we tap into our inner Reservoir, and assist other people in recognizing and accessing their own Reservoirs, the greater the personal and collective happiness. Social change is a direct result of our continued personal and collective plugging-in to our true natures, our highest selves. Let's explore this Reservoir idea a bit.
The most personally significant meaning is that the Reservoir is the great pool of Self Realization. No, I'm not talking religion or stringent conceptual frameworks, I'm talking about consciously being on a journey that would bring me closer to expressing in my every moment, in my every thought, in my every relationship with creation, all that I know to be true in my deepest heart of hearts. And sometimes the path to the Reservoir does feel like a Tolkien quest, with karmic orcs at every turn.
Bottom line is this: the Creative Intelligence, the Source, may be found in the deepest part of the reservoir pool. We already possess the skills to get there, we just have to recognize and develop them. The closer we get to the pool, the greater the happiness we feel. The greater our personal happiness, as well as the happiness of everyone around us, the sooner the world is transformed into its true identity - a blessed place. Whew! Let's digress to medicine for a bit.
Another way to look at the Reservoir is that it is filled with powers. One power is the power to heal. Think of Christ. Now immediately drop all concepts except one: Christ as a healer - a Shaman, an energetic healer at that. He knew how to attune to the energy in his own body, and also attune to the energy in the bodies of those he healed, much like a super turbocharged Reiki Master, but greater still. He had full access to his Reservoir. He was in his power. His karma was complete. We can do that, too. We can access that power.
With this power, we can also consciously recognize when an infection is beginning and direct vast armies of our white blood cells to do their job. We can keep our arterial walls plaque free. We are able to attune to the frequencies of different tissues and organs and correct aberrant frequencies to restore health. We are able to speed the reconstruction of fractures. Star Trekky, yes, but these things and more are already being performed by people who have journeyed close to the pool.
If you have followed this ramble so far, here is where we are. If we look deeply inside, we know there exists something vital and animating. We may not have a name for it, but for all of us who know it is there, we may know it by many names: The Reservoir; the pool of our Self Realization; the storehouse of our Human Potential. Isn't this is where you want to be, where all human hearts really long to be?
How do we get there? That is what it is all about, isn't it? Frankly, I don't definitively know, but I have a few suspicions -- Meditation. Mindfulness. Kindness. Martial arts. Yoga. Lots of life decisions like surrounding yourself with great souls - people who are also consciously moving towards the Reservoir. Smiling and laughing as much as you can. High Integrity. Recycling. Growing food organically. Volunteering. Reading uplifting books. Being positive. Random acts of kindness. Recognizing that everyone just really wants to be happy. Immediately forgiving and blessing those who are struggling to make inner connection, whether they know it or not. What other uplifting, consciousness-inspiring activities or thoughts are relevant to you?
So if you've read this far, why have I brought you here? The answer is that for the first time in four years, I didn't want to write about intravenous nutrient therapy, tongue and fingernail analysis or anything having to do with the prostate. I am very excited about all of these and am presently having a natural medicine research-generated nirvana experience about these and other topics. You'll get plenty of medical information from me during the next four years of Pacific Naturopathic Newsletters.
What I want to express through all these words is that vitality and good health are your birthright. In most cases, the Pacific Naturopathic health care team can provide you with the latest research and suggestions on how to care for your body. But we'd be remiss in not acknowledging that healing truly begins in your mind and heart and that only by consciously walking the path to the Reservoir can you achieve fulfilling balance and harmony on all levels of being.
May All Beings Be Happy!

Many disease states compromise the human gut's ability to adequately absorb nutrients like amino acids,
minerals, and vitamins.
* Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, ALS, and Multiple Sclerosis have been shown to greatly benefit from IV antioxidant protocols that help heal the inflammation in the brain often found with these diseases.
* Chronic fatigue states such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Brain Fog have mitochondrial energy deficits shown to be helped when specific natural supplements are given intravenously.
* Many immune system and detoxification functions can be improved with IV protocols.
* A number of cancers are very responsive to IV nutritional therapies which can be used to help treat cancer as well as to improve tolerance of conventional cancer treatments.
* Some treatments involve 1-3 hour drips and others are 30 minute treatments, depending on the nutrient mix and concentration being infused.
To name a few:
IV Glutathione
IV Alpha Lipoic Acid
IV Vit C
Amino Acid infusions
Vitamin and Mineral drips
Myers' Cocktail
Other Protocols for Energy and Immune System Function
We have a dedicated Infusion room that is relaxing and peaceful for all these therapies.
Dr. Marcel Hernandez has been trained in IV therapeutic protocols and will be offering treatments for those patients for whom treatments are appropriate and safe.
Phone now to get on the list for treatment consideration. 650-917-1121. An initial 30-minute consultation and current blood test is required for existing patients. A 90-minute first office call and blood test is required for new patients. Space is limited to four people receiving treatments a day.
Your Mouth and Your Health --Things You Need to Know
Increasingly, the medical profession understands that mouth health and dental practices correlate with bodily health. The Mayo Clinic has an excellent articleon this oral connection. Dr. Marcel's tongue diagnosis practice is also based on this correlation (read about it here).
The impact of mouth disease is obvious to patients with previously undiagnosed dental abscesses who have regained overall health after addressing the infection in their mouths. The Weston Price Foundation is well
known for their researchon the potentially hazardous impact of root canals on overall health.
Cardiologists are aware that periodontal disease is correlated with heart disease. One study found that conditions such as gum disease, cavities and missing teeth predict heart disease as accurately as do cholesterol levels.
Given all of this, when faced with the information that my gums and teeth were not as healthy as I thought they were, and that I needed a sinus lift and implant surgery, I designed a gum treatment protocol for myself. I promised to provide it to our readers after testing it out for myself. I am happy to report both that I sailed through the sinus lift and implant surgery and that my gums are substantially healthier than they were two to three months ago. Following are the most useful of the habits I initiated to improve my periodontal situation.
I started with a nutritional protocol, based on 100 mg of Coenzyme Q10 and 1 teaspoon daily of Winterberry, our bioflavanoid heavy berry extract. Coenzyme Q10 has been found to restore gum health in amounts as low as 60 mg, and bioflavonoids are integral to the health of all connective tissues.
If you do use toothpaste, I recommend either Jason's, as it contains neither sodium lauryl sulfate nor fluoride, or a tea tree oil toothpaste. I myself switched to a mixture of baking soda and sea salt. As I do have a remaining mercury amalgam, I moistened that mixture with colloidal silver. If you have no mercury amalgams, you could substitute food grade hydrogen peroxide. I flossed and brushed twice daily, using a soft toothbrush and flossing and brushing techniques taught to me by my very conscientious dentist. Initially, I followed up the brushing with Edgar Cayce designed IpSab mouthwash, an astringent mouthwash that tonifies the tissues. I dabbed Spilanthes tincture on problem areas.
To enhance gum health, I stimulated my gums daily with a Butler Gum Stimulator (readily available on Amazon, but not so easy to find anymore at your local drugstore). And for general oral health, I experimented with an Ayurvedic technique called oil pulling. Traditional Ayurvedic therapists recommend sesame oil, but I found that too strong. Almond oil is more palatable. Coconut oil enthusiasts recommend coconut oil due to its antifungal properties, and I found that that worked for me. Read about it here.
If I were to narrow down a treatment protocol to the best of all of these, after flossing, I would brush twice daily with a baking soda/sea salt powder.
I encourage all of our readers to find a conscientious dentist with an interest in oral health. If you have found such a dentist, or have a favorite dentist, do share names and contact numbers with us, as well as a few statements as to why you like your dentist. We will be most grateful and will compile a resource for our readers and patients.

The biggest topics that keep coming up in my practice the past couple months have been thyroid and weight loss issues.
Many women suffering from hypothyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism (where they may not even know that their thyroid is involved) have a difficult time losing weight. First off, having a hypothyroid condition where the thyroid is underactive decreases a person's metabolism, causing them to feel more sluggish and burn fewer calories than normal. This slowing of the metabolism in and of itself can lead to weight gain with normal eating habits or a hard time losing weight even with cutting calories and working out.
In addition, if a woman is also exposing herself to toxins through her environment via things like processed and conventional foods, artificial ingredients, plastics, conventional cleaning supplies, industrial products, etc., she can have an increased toxic load that is hard for her body to process. This increased burden on her body causes her to hold onto her weight more, as her body tries to store the toxins more safely in fat tissues. Increasing toxic load in the body multiplies the number of fat cells to help avoid poisoning and keeping toxins away from vital organs.
Thus, optimizing a woman's thyroid condition as well as doing a cleanse or a detox can really help to speed the weight loss process. Balancing the thyroid can help to bring the metabolism back to normal so a woman can feel more energy and begin to burn more calories again. A cleanse or a detox program will help with losing weight by optimizing a person's digestive and immune systems to process the toxins and decrease the toxic burden on the body to allow for more mobilization of fat stores.
Do you know of anyone who has a thyroid condition and has a difficult time losing weight? We can help to optimize their thyroid function and get them on track to feeling their best!
Here is also an informative article supporting the importance of doing a detox program before starting a weight loss regimen.
There is so much that is not understood about what actually happens in hypnotherapy. And even though it has been scientifically investigated for over 60 years, there is no accepted definition of the phenomenon. However, researchers and practitioners are in agreement about what typically occurs when a person experiences the hypnotic state, and how the hypnotic state can be used to help people with a variety of problems. When working with hypnotherapy you are engaging both the conscious and unconscious mind. Think of it this way: two heads are better than one.
You start with a goal or issue that you wish to change or influence. This intake discussion takes place with the conscious mind and there is an agreement about what change is desired. Then gradually the conscious mind is led into a deep state of focused relaxation. This state is something all of us have experienced whether in a movie, listening to music, or even driving! Though you are induced into trance, you are always in control. While in this state the hypnotherapist is the guide but you control the journey.
During the session you will be able to go deeper into the unconscious issues which are controlling your life, your mind, and your body. It is then that you have the opportunity to reprogram yourself and change what has been controlling you. If you have found yourself coming back to the same problem time and again that is a sign of negative programming and can be changed. What is primary to success is motivation to change the issue or approach a goal in a different way.
Some issues that hypnotherapy is known for treating include managing stress, reducing fear and anxiety, as an analgesic for pain, for weight loss, athletic performance, test-taking, stop-smoking, phobias and obsessions. Hypnosis is totally safe, natural, and there are no side effects whatsoever. In time you can develop your own ability to use self-hypnosis to deal with issues on your own.
Both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association recognized hypnotherapy as a valid therapeutic procedure. Since 1995, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has recommended hypnotherapy as a treatment for chronic pain.

Sweet Vidalia Onion Relish
* * *
Sweet and tangy -- great on sandwiches or cooked into cornbread
* * *
Our love affair with turmeric (curcumin) continues....
INGREDIENTS
(a canning recipe to make 20 pints, so proportionately reduce for smaller quantities)
DIRECTIONS
1. Roast red, green, and yellow bell peppers over an open flame or in broiler, turning frequently, until skins are charred and blistered. Place in a bowl and cover with plastic; let sit 5 to 10 minutes. Remove skins. Cut peppers in half, lengthwise. Remove seeds and stem, and chop into small pieces. Set aside.
2. Place grated onions in a colander to drain liquid. Place them in a large bowl, and sprinkle with 1/4 cup kosher salt. Mix by hand. Mix in cabbage and 3 tablespoons salt by hand. Let sit 1 hour.
3. Place onions and cabbage into colander, and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Place in cheese cloth or towel, and squeeze out additional water.
4. lace cabbage and onions into a large pot over medium-high heat. Add roasted bell peppers. Stir in sugar, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, mustard seed, and celery seed. Bring to a low boil, stirring constantly to prevent onions from sticking to the bottom. Reduce heat to medium, and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring often.
5. To prepare jars you first need to wash jars then place them into the canning pot with rack and boil them in water to sterilize them. Fill a small pot half way with water and bring to simmer; place the lids into water. Taking one jar out of the water at a time put on canning funnel and fill with hot relish about 1/2 inch from the top. Then take a kitchen knife a stick down to the bottom of jar and work the knife around to remove all air bubbles. Wipe off top of jar very well and clean then place a hot lid on jar the screw ring on top. Repeat until all relish is gone. Jars and relish must stay hot throughout this canning process.
6. Place in a bath of simmering water, covering the jars by one inch. Process for 10 minutes, or according to your local extension's guidelines. When jars start to seal and vacuum, the lids will make a pop sound and your canning was a success. Once jars have been opened, store in the refrigerator and use within two weeks.
Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information
Fibrocystic breasts are often lumpy and painful. The lumps feel ropey and moveable, and often change with the menstrual cycle. Breast thermography can tell us whether there is an unusual temperature between breasts in the area of the lump in question, and whether there is abnormal vasculature associated with the lump. Either of those findings would increase the probability that we would refer a patient for the anatomical evaluation provided by mammograms and ultrasound.
Lumps which seem not to move and are hard or granular are far more suspicious. While thermography adds diagnostic information, we generally subsequently refer a patient with a palpable lump of this nature. Patients often ask whether they could forego the mammogram and simply go for an ultrasound. Standard of practice dictates an initial mammogram to locate problem areas. Lumps detected on mammograms are followed by an ultrasound. The purpose of the ultrasound is to discern whether the lump is solid or fluid filled. Solid lumps are most often biopsied for diagnosis, whereas a fluid filled lump generally reflects a cystic process.
In either case, thermography is a useful tool for determining whether or not a "next step" is necessary.

The cost to you of breast thermography is $225.

Pacific Naturopathic

In our ongoing efforts to serve our patients with the latest, most effective natural health approaches, we are delighted to share our excitement about or latest offerings with our readers...
Intravenous Nutritional Therapy
This is a major addition not only to our services, but to our ability to secure dramatic, positive results with safe, effective therapies.
Here's how it works. We will need to see a comprehensive blood test not older than three months. If you have a recent blood test, you will need to have one more lab test, a G6PD, to rule out a genetic condition that is a contraindication for IV therapy. If you do not have a recent comprehensive blood test, we can order it for you.
Next, you will need a short office visit before onset of treatments to determine if I.V. therapy is safe and appropriate for your needs. Your unique personal protocol will be discussed with Pacific Naturopathic doctors and you can start IV therapy the same day as the office visit.
We offer a comfortable, quiet, peaceful atmosphere where you may read, work on your computer, listen to music or watch movies (with earphones), or just sit back and relax or nap. There is minimal discomfort. You will be able to drive yourself to and from the appointment without any difficulty.
At first, we will only be able to accommodate a maximum of four people a day for treatments. If you feel you may be helped with I.V. therapy, or would like to just explore the possibilities please phone to reserve your space soon.
Click here for detailed information about IV nutritional therapy offered at Pacific Naturopathic.
Boston Heart Diagnostics has offered Pacific Naturopathic doctors an amazing deal on their Cardiac Risk Assessment blood test, at no out-of pocket cost to you!
Yes, what you read is true. Standard blood lipid panels (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL) are not predictive of cardiovascular disease. The test we are offering includes proprietary advanced risk tests, and a comprehensive offering of lipid, lipoprotein, apolipoprotein, cardiometabolic, liver, kidney and genetic tests -- four pages of test results, plus a 54-page narrative discussing your results. And best of all, except for a $35 administrative fee, there is no cost to you! How is this possible? What's the catch? Click here to read about this extraordinary test.
Note: You must be an established patient at Pacific Naturopathic and have health insurance for this special program. You must also have a diagnosable condition, like high cholesterol, cardiac abnormalities or a strong family history of heart disease for us to be able to order this test. Other low-cost options are available for those who do not have insurance. Unfortunately, we are unable to order this test for Medicare patients. The government does not yet allow naturopathic doctors to bill Medicare. A 60-minute return office call is required to discuss your results. The cost of the return office call is $180.
We are delighted to have found a far infrared sauna at a price most of us can afford.
Dr. Connie enjoys the sauna between patients
We have long owned two far infrared saunas -- one at our home here in the Bay Area and one at our Hawaii retreat. They are both big, bulky wooden structures that dominate the space they are in.
We have reached an arrangement with the manufacturer to distribute a high tech, state of the art portable far infrared sauna for a very reasonable price -- just $995 plus tax. Shipping is free!
Like to try one before you invest? Easy...we have one in our office specifically for you to try out at no cost. Just give a call, 917-1121, to make sure the room is free.
There are many reasons why a sauna is one of the best investments you can make for your health. Click here to read about why we think this is a deal just too good to pass up.
