Your Pacific Naturopathic Practitioners: What is Moving in Consciousness
The Pacific Naturopathic Newsletter is loosely thematic -- Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel suggest a theme to the other Pacific Naturopathic writers every month. In truth, mostly we write about whatever we want and the theme sometimes gets addressed. The theme we suggested for this newsletter is "what is happening in your consciousness in the present moment about your practice."
As we mentioned last week, Naturopathic Medicine is a booming profession, and health-conscious people are finally catching on to what we do. Dr. Corrine, Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel are enthusiastically attending medical conference after medical conference because so much exciting and revolutionary research is being generated in the integrated medicine field. Integrated medicine brings the best of conventional medicine together with the best of alternative and complementary medicine to form a new paradigm. Naturopathic doctors are in the vanguard of this shift in consciousness.
In the recent past, when we attended medical conferences that focused on healing illnesses by balancing body chemistry through the use of nutraceuticals, the makeup of the attendees would be 75 percent naturopathic doctors with a few MDs and chiropractors sprinkled in. Last year, we went to a bioidentical hormone conference where the majority of the attendees were MDs. Things are changing. Of course, MDs are still bound by a standard of practice (enforced by the medical board) that discourages deviation from the traditional path of pharmaceutical-based medicine. But not even a conservative medical board can stop a revolution. People do want integrated medicine, and they want it now.
It is with great pleasure that we introduce a new practitioner with a familiar name to Pacific Naturopathic -- Jane Hernandez, B.S., CCHT. That's right, yet another Hernandez, at your service. Dr. Marcel's sister (Dr. Connie's sister-in-law) is bringing her talents to Mountain View as part of our integrated health care team. Jane is a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, but she is so much more than that. She is also an EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Practitioner and a Matrix Reimprinting Practitioner. She adds a therapeutic dimension to Pacific Naturopathic that we have never had before. Read about her below.
So, what is moving in the present consciousness of your health care team at Pacific Naturopathic? In this issue, Dr. Connie writes about energy medicine -- an age old approach to healing that is being scientifically validated and reborn in a variety of ways. (Synchronistically, Jane Hernandez brings to Pacific Naturopathic exactly what Dr. Connie is talking about.) Dr. Marcel writes about his present focus in I.V. nutritional therapy, Dr. Corrine offers thoughts on craniosacral therapy as a powerful way of dealing with various types of headaches and Dr. Vivek writes about the Ayurvedic approach to weight loss.

Not Science Fiction Anymore
Ancient Indian wisdom teaches that we have recently entered Dwapara Yuga, an age which is described as the "age of energy." In Dwapara Yuga, that which was previously unimaginable becomes commonplace as minds open to energetic realities.
For years now, conventional medicine has become increasingly reliant on nonphysical therapies. Forsaking the scalpel, surgeons use precisely focused beams of light to staunch bleeding or to remove diseased tissue, Ultraviolet light, a form of electromagnetic radiation, is used to treat skin conditions. Magnetic resonance is used in imaging. Radiation is used both in diagnostics and in treatment.
Complementary medicine has worked with energy in similar, and also in less accepted ways. What are known as "black box" diagnostics and therapies attempt to read and balance energy flows in the body. Given that we are in our infancy in the age of energy medicine, results have not been as consistent, precise or predictable as we would like.
The premises on which these diagnostics and therapies are based, however, are premises which will guide the medicine of the future. We have come to acknowledge what ancient wisdom has always known. Each one of us is a being of infinite energy. We live in an energetic reality in which that which appears to be solid is solid in appearance only.
We ourselves, every plant and every stone, every bacteria and every virus, is patterned by underlying, interconnected energy fields. We each emit a unique and identifiable vibrational signature. But it isn't just that. Every thought we think, every word we utter, and every interaction we have with every other being, physical or nonphysical, affects us and affects them, sometimes in harmful ways, sometimes in helpful ways.
Homeopathy and flower essences, and light, color and sound therapies utilize resonant frequencies of the medicine and the body being treated to return energy pattering to normal. Acupuncture frees the flow of energy through the pattern. Even more far out, but soundly based on the science of vibration, are rapidly developing transformational therapies which, independent of energy inputs outside of ourselves, reprogram our energetic patterning. (See upcoming articles by new Pacific Naturopathic therapist Jane Hernandez on the Emotional Freedom Technique and on Matrix Reimprinting.)
I predict we're in for a wild and enjoyable ride as these and other energy medicine options are refined and become mainstream.

Science and Testimonials on the Myers Cocktail I.V. Therapy
* * *
An Intravenous nutrient therapy that promotes healing
and replenishes energy
(Read Dr. Connie's testimonial, below)
Last month, I wrote extensively on the Myers Cocktail, how it works in the body, conditions it addresses, ease of administration and safety. This month, I'll let others do the talking.
In a 2007 study, a Myers' Cocktail was given once a week for 8 weeks to 7 treatment-resistant fibromyalgia patients. At the end of the study, all reported increased energy levels within 24-48 hours after the infusion. There was a 80% decrease in fatigue, a 60% reduction of pain and increased activities of daily living. (J Altern Complement Med. 2009 Mar;15(3):247-57. doi: 10.1089/acm.2008.0410.)
The modified "Myers' cocktail," which consists of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C, has been found to be effective against acute asthma attacks, migraines, fatigue (including chronic fatigue syndrome), fibromyalgia, acute muscle spasm, upper respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis, cardiovascular disease, and other disorders. This paper presents a rationale for the therapeutic use of intravenous nutrients, reviews the relevant published clinical research, describes the author's clinical experiences, and discusses potential side effects and precautions. (Alternative Medicine Review (2002;7:389-403)
Although few comprehensive studies have been done on the cocktail, Dr. Alan Gaby, M.D., has documented the effectiveness of Myers' Cocktail in thousands of treatments. Some double-blind studies have been conducted, including trials of individual ingredients, including IV magnesium, which has proven effective in treating migraines, asthma, fibromyalgia, depression and some heart conditions. IV Magnesium and calcium together have been proven effective in treating the neuropathy caused by some chemo drugs.
"I highly recommend the Myers push for any allergy sufferers who are at their wits end and have tried it all. I noticed an immediate and significant improvement in my symptoms. I no longer take over-the-counter meds to control my allergies and have been able to fully enjoy exercise again."
And now, Dr. Connie's testimonial:
"As many of my patients know, I'm a bit of a skeptic when it comes to many highly hyped therapies. I respect the research, but I want to experience what what the therapy does for me. As I feel well almost all the time, it's hard for me to test things out. On my most recent return from Hawaii, however, the combination of stress from jet lag, night time charley horse awakenings, computer melt downs and other disruptive events caused me to feel exhausted, irritable and generally not myself. Thinking of the high magnesium content of the famous IV Myers' Cocktail, I thought I'd try one.
I prevailed upon Dr. Marcel to hook me up. The IV itself lasted about 20 minutes, and I didn't notice much of a difference that afternoon. Dr. Marcel, however, couldn't help but notice that evening when, instead of collapsing on the couch, I spent three hours re-organizing my kitchen. I slept very well that night, which was good, though not extraordinary. The next day, however, I started to feel really well, more like myself. It is now four days later. No leg cramps, I've slept well, woken rested, and been energized. I'm very motivated to try it again!"

The cost of a Meyers' IV nutritional cocktail is $125. If you have any questions or would like to be evaluated to determine if you are a good candidate for IV Nutrient Therapy, please phone Pacific Naturopathic at 650-917-1121. Intravenous Nutritional Protocols
at Pacific Naturopathic
* * *
Many disease states compromise the human gut's ability to adequately absorb nutrients like amino acids,
minerals, and vitamins.
* Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, ALS, and Multiple Sclerosis have been shown to greatly benefit from IV antioxidant protocols that help heal the inflammation in the brain often found with these diseases.
* Chronic fatigue states such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Brain Fog have mitochondrial energy deficits shown to be helped when specific natural supplements are given intravenously.
* Many immune system and detoxification functions can be improved with IV protocols.
* A number of cancers are very responsive to IV nutritional therapies which can be used to help treat cancer as well as to improve tolerance of conventional cancer treatments.
* Some treatments involve 1-3 hour drips and others are 30 minute treatments, depending on the nutrient mix and concentration being infused.
To name a few:
IV Alpha Lipoic Acid
IV Vit C
Amino Acid infusions
Vitamin and Mineral drips
Other Protocols for Energy and Immune System Function
We have a dedicated Infusion room that is relaxing and peaceful for all these therapies.
Dr. Marcel Hernandez has been trained in IV therapeutic protocols and will be offering treatments for those patients for whom treatments are appropriate and safe.
Phone now to get on the list for treatment consideration. 650-917-1121. An initial 30-minute consultation and current blood test is required for existing patients. A 90-minute first office call and blood test is required for new patients. Space is limited to four people receiving treatments a day.
Expanding on the Basics --
* * *
Connie Hernandez, N.D.
For this newsletter, Dr. Marcel asked each one of us, doctors and practitioners, to write about what is exciting in our individual healing practices. It is exciting to me that naturopathy is infinitely expansive.
Naturopathy never was and never will be a "cookbook" medicine. For every client, we consider body, mind, soul, environment, lifestyle, and more. For every condition, we have options of physical medicine, dietary manipulation, nutritional and botanical therapies, energy medicines, health and lifestyle counseling. Interventions are ever changing, constantly evolving, and always tailored to the individual.
It is particularly exciting to me that science, in this age of energy and in the study of vibration, is coming to acknowledge and understand the Vix Medicatrix Naturae (the healing power of nature). As naturopathic doctors in the vitalistic tradition, we were taught to work with the healing power of nature. By virtue of various healing experiences, through the practice of the Energization Exercises, and through the teachings of Parmahansa Yogananda, I came to know the healing power of nature. Through ever advancing technology, we can now characterize and quantify our work with that vibrational reality. And that way of working is bringing the understanding of the healing power of nature into the mainstream.
It is not just the vibrational aspect of nature that is fundamental to naturopathy, but also the physicality of it. Pure water, wholesome and organic food, clean air and interaction with the elements creates good health. It is exciting to me to meet and interact with so many young people with a renewed understanding of the contribution to their mental, physical and spiritual health of a lifestyle which emphasizes these things. There's a new depth of understanding and commitment in a segment of today's young people who are bringing this movement forward. I love that!
And I love that I am continuously reminded of all of these things as we grow our beautiful turmeric (olena in Hawaiian) and renew ourselves on a regular basis at Pacific Naturopathic Healing Retreat Center on the magnificent Big Island of Hawaii.

Craniosacral Therapy for Headache Relief
* * *
Safe, Effective, Extremely Relaxing
Craniosacral therapy can be beneficial for many different types of headaches including migraines and sinus headaches. I have treated many people during this allergy season with the severe congestion that has led to sinus headaches.
Along with other natural therapies such as quercetin and bromelain that can decrease inflammation, craniosacral therapy can also help with relieving the pressure and congestion of these sinus headaches. A craniosacral session can improve drainage and help clear nasal passages as the cranial bones are being worked on. Several people coming in to see me for craniosacral therapy for other reasons have had their congestion relieved as a byproduct of the treatment, so craniosacral therapy can be a great added treatment to help with allergies and sinus headaches on top of other therapies used.
Another type of headache craniosacral therapy can really benefit is migraine headaches. Often, an imbalance in the autonomic nervous control of the blood vessels in the head can result in migraines. Craniosacral therapy does a great job of normalizing the autonomic nervous system, taking the pressure off either the nerve that is controlling the blood vessel or the blood vessel itself that may be causing the headache. By helping people to relax deeply, it is also particularly effective with migraines because migraines are often triggered by stress.
Not only can craniosacral therapy benefit sinus headaches and migraines, it can improve a number of other conditions including anxiety, depression, insomnia, jaw pain, dizziness, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and more.

Meet Jane Hernandez, CCHT
Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist,
EFT (Tapping) and Matrix Reimprinting Practitioner
* * *
I was attracted to hypnotherapy through a personal event in my own life in which I was able to transform a negative belief into positive action. I learned then what hypnotherapy can do. Before experiencing it, hypnotherapy was just a curiosity that stimulated my interest. But it doesn't take an intellectual stretch to understand that our subconscious has a profound effect on what we believe and how we behave.
What if we could change some of the beliefs and concepts that hold us back? I'm not talking about will power or cleaning up one's act, I'm referring to amazing techniques (Hypnotherapy, EFT, Matrix Reimprinting) which allow you to reprogram basic patterns in your subconscious and create real change in your life. Current neuroscience and biology research are explaining the dynamics which occur in the mind and body to effect these changes. The result of these scientifically validated therapeutic approaches is deep, lasting personal transformation.
Trance in hypnotherapy is not about losing control to the hypnotherapist -- you are always in control but at a deeper level of your mind. When in a trance, you connect to those places in yourself where you want to be and elicit depths of understanding that illuminate your conscious life.
With EFT you can bring down your stress levels in just a few minutes and banish life-long phobias. Matrix Reimprinting allows you to not only open blocks in your energy but also to rewrite the perception of traumatic life events.
Among the many conditions which these techniques can be used for are:
*stress *mental/emotional blocks
*pain management *anxiety
*weight loss *fears & phobias
*trauma *life purpose
*skill rehearsal *transition
*sports performance *pre-surgery
*public speaking *self-esteem
*test taking *depression
Jane sees clients at Pacific Naturopathic in Mountain View on Thursdays and at her private practice in Oakland on other days.

Golden Turmeric Latkes
* * *
These crispy-on-the-outside-and-tender-on-the-inside latkes are
delicious paired with a subtly spicy clove-scented applesauce
* * *
Our love affair with turmeric (curcumin) continues....
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 cups shredded peeled russet potatoes
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1-2 fresh green serrano chiles, stemmed and finely chopped
- 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves and tender stems
- 1/2 cup chickpea flour (see Note) or unbleached all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 2 large eggs, slightly beaten
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
TIPS & NOTES
- To prepare sauce: Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add ginger and cook, stirring, until light brown and aromatic, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Stir in turmeric and cloves. Cook until the spices are fragrant, 30 seconds to 1 minute more. Scrape the spices into the applesauce in a small bowl and stir well to combine.
- Preheat oven to 200°F. Place a baking sheet in the oven.
- To prepare latkes: Thoroughly mix potatoes, onion, chiles to taste, cilantro, flour, cumin, salt, turmeric and eggs in a large bowl.
- Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place a heaping tablespoon of the potato mixture in the skillet and flatten with a spatula into a disk roughly 3 inches in diameter. Form as many latkes as you can in the pan without overcrowding. Cook until golden brown and crispy on the bottom, 3 to 5 minutes. Flip and continue cooking until the other side is golden brown and crispy, 3 to 5 minutes. Briefly drain on a paper towel-lined plate, then transfer to the oven to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining oil and potato mixture.
- Serve the latkes with the seasoned applesauce.
- Make Ahead Tip: Cover and refrigerate the sauce (Step 1) for up to 3 days.
- Note: Chickpea flour, or garbanzo bean flour, is commonly used in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking. It's a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour. Look for it in the gluten-free or bulk-foods section of large supermarkets and natural-foods stores or online at bobsredmill.com.

Non-Invasive,Radiation Free, Informative
Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information
Breast thermography is an exciting evaluation technique for breast health for so many reasons. For one thing, unlike the conventional option of mammography, breast thermography follows the ever great dictum of medicine "above all do no harm." No squeezing of the breasts, no radiation.
For another thing, breast thermography is an avenue of evaluation for young women and other women with dense breast tissue. It is now legislated that women with dense breast tissue be warned that mammography is not an accurate method of evaluation for them.
Yet another benefit of breast thermography is the capacity to monitor physiologic change. We can see the development of new blood vessels. We can measure the heat that accompanies breast disease.
And, for one more benefit, breast thermography can monitor the effect of hormones and meds that regulate hormones on the breast tissue itself. Frequent monitoring can detect change long before the change becomes apparent with anatomic monitoring.
The cost to you of breast thermography is $225.

Nearly two-thirds of adults in the US are overweight and about one thirds are obese. In the past two decades, the number of overweight children and adolescents has doubled.
Obesity increases the risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, high cholesterol and some types of cancers. Obesity is one of the contributing causes for about 80% of type 2 diabetes, about 70% of cardiovascular diseases and about 42% of breast and colon cancers.
Obesity in the US costs over $75 billion a year in medical expenses. Americans are spending over $30 billion a year on diet programs and products. A recent national panel concluded that no commercial diet program has long-term success and that the YOYO weight loss creates major health risks. Ever-changing research adds to the confusion. Earlier recommendation was low/no fat diet, current recommendation is balanced fat. Earlier recommendation was trans fats, current recommendation is no trans fats. Atkin's diet may create risk of kidney diseases, gout and other problems.
Ayurveda, the 5000 year old science of natural healing acknowledges that each person is a unique individual with a unique psycho-somatic constitution or mind-body type. It uses a systematic and clinically proven methodology to identify an individual's unique mind-body type. Every person's weight metabolism is different. Ayurveda focuses on understanding the uniqueness of the weight metabolism of every individual and then creating a comprehensive natural weight management program customized for that specific individual. Ayurveda does not treat obesity; it treats a unique individual with an imbalanced weight metabolism.
Ayurvedic comprehensive natural weight management approach is to balance the individual's weight metabolism using individualized nutrition, specific herbal formulas, natural cleansing procedures, customized yoga sequences, exercise and lifestyle modification which include pranayama & meditation.
Clinical research done in Europe and US has created definitive scientific evidence that individualized Ayurvedic nutrition for Vata, Pitta & Kapha mind-body types is more effective than the "one diet fits all" approach. Ayurvedic herbs like Guggulu, Garcinia, Turmeric, Trikatu, Triphala etc have been clinically proven for their natural weight management actions without any side-effects. Ayurvedic natural cleansing procedures like Udvartana(herbal powder massage), Abhyanga(herbal oil massage), Swedana( herbal steam sauna) and Basti(herbal decoction enema) have been clinically demonstrated to have detoxing and natural weight loss actions. Role of Yoga, pranayama and meditation in long term weight management has also been scientifically established.
Weight Loss benefits resulting from Ayurvedic natural methods are long lasting and without any side effects. During this process, the person learns how to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle of balanced nutrition and exercise. This prevents re-gaining weight by falling back into old unhealthy lifestyle.

New Offerings at
In our ongoing efforts to serve our patients with the latest, most effective natural health approaches, we are delighted to share our excitement about or latest offerings with our readers...
Intravenous Nutritional Therapy
This is a major addition not only to our services, but to our ability to secure dramatic, positive results with safe, effective therapies.
Here's how it works. We will need to see a comprehensive blood test not older than three months. If you have a recent blood test, you will need to have one more lab test, a G6PD, to rule out a genetic condition that is a contraindication for IV therapy. If you do not have a recent comprehensive blood test, we can order it for you.
Next, you will need a short office visit before onset of treatments to determine if I.V. therapy is safe and appropriate for your needs. Your unique personal protocol will be discussed with Pacific Naturopathic doctors and you can start IV therapy the same day as the office visit.
We offer a comfortable, quiet, peaceful atmosphere where you may read, work on your computer, listen to music or watch movies (with earphones), or just sit back and relax or nap. There is minimal discomfort. You will be able to drive yourself to and from the appointment without any difficulty.
At first, we will only be able to accommodate a maximum of four people a day for treatments. If you feel you may be helped with I.V. therapy, or would like to just explore the possibilities please phone to reserve your space soon.
Click here for detailed information about IV nutritional therapy offered at Pacific Naturopathic.
Boston Heart Diagnostics has offered Pacific Naturopathic doctors an amazing deal on their Cardiac Risk Assessment blood test, at no out-of pocket cost to you!
Yes, what you read is true. Standard blood lipid panels (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL) are not predictive of cardiovascular disease. The test we are offering includes proprietary advanced risk tests, and a comprehensive offering of lipid, lipoprotein, apolipoprotein, cardiometabolic, liver, kidney and genetic tests -- four pages of test results, plus a 54-page narrative discussing your results. And best of all, except for a $35 administrative fee, there is no cost to you! How is this possible? What's the catch? Click here to read about this extraordinary test.
Note: You must be an established patient at Pacific Naturopathic and have health insurance for this special program. Other low-cost options are available for those who do not have insurance. Unfortunately, we are unable to order this test for Medicare patients. The government does not yet allow naturopathic doctors to bill Medicare. A 60-minute return office call is required to discuss your results. The cost of the return office call is $180.
We are delighted to have found a far infrared sauna at a price most of us can afford.
Dr. Connie enjoys the sauna between patients
We have long owned two far infrared saunas -- one at our home here in the Bay Area and one at our Hawaii retreat. They are both big, bulky wooden structures that dominate the space they are in.
We have reached an arrangement with the manufacturer to distribute a high tech, state of the art portable far infrared sauna for a very reasonable price -- just $995 plus tax. Shipping is free!
Like to try one before you invest? Easy...we have one in our office specifically for you to try out at no cost. Just give a call, 917-1121, to make sure the room is free.
There are many reasons why a sauna is one of the best investments you can make for your health. Click here to read about why we think this is a deal just too good to pass up.

"We spent about five days unwinding in this brightly lit, open and relaxing place. It was hard to leave the comfortable tranquility of the home, with it's sprawling green views to the ocean."
"The listing description and all positive comments are very accurate for this vacation home. The photos are great, but in person, the setup is even better."
"I was amazed at how quiet it was...so much that any part of the day I could enjoy the sounds of the ocean, birds, and breezes."
We loved this place. Stayed for a week and didn't want to leave.
"The property is a delight, plenty of places to wander barefoot and be a kid. My favorite thing was waking in the middle of the night to the sounds of the ocean, cool breezes, tropical smells and rain."
"To echo one of the other reviews, the home is better than the photos."
"What a beautiful home and amazing retreat from the hustle and busy of life! The house was immaculate and offered spectacular views of the ocean and surrounding grounds. Avocado, mango, lemon, and tangerine trees were in the backyard..."
