Dramatic Expansion of Services plus Lots More

If it seems like the content of our newsletters has shifted since the beginning of the year, that's because it's true. For more than four years we've offered a newsy, low key publication with a focus on information and education

But since the beginning of January, Dr. Connie, Dr. Corrine and Dr. Marcel have together logged around 100 hours of continuing medical education.  The seminars have been so inspiring to us that we are adapting and growing our practice to incorporate the profound ways of serving our patients that we have learned.  Here are some of the elements that emerged from our studies.

Naturopathic medicine is quietly but absolutely booming. There is no other profession that so intimately entwines the tried and tested vitalistic energetics of Nature with the most up-to-date scientific evidence and technological advances. Intricate discoveries in biochemistry are being translated and implemented in medical practices by naturopathic physicians on a daily basis.  It takes years for most new concepts to be integrated into the dominant medical paradigm. The general population is discovering this.  Our patients have always known this.

Were you ever so excited about an idea that you just couldn't wait to share it with everyone you knew?  That's how we feel about our new offerings at Pacific Naturopathic. Take intravenous nutrition therapy, for example.

At Pacific Naturopathic, by far the number one complaint among our patients is unspecific fatigue.  This is a fatigue without a diagnosed medical condition.  It is a fatigue that  one pushes through because one has to.  Well, consider this concept: most unspecific fatigue has a basis in malabsorption.

Malabsorption is a tricky thing to treat because if you have difficulty absorbing nutrients through the digestive tract you are not going to correct a the deficiency by swallowing handfuls of vitamins and minerals.  But -- if you can bypass the digestive tract and deliver nutrients right to the cellular mitochondria, that translates as energy production and that's what IV therapy can do.  It can get the food into the energy factory right through the front door. See a description of our IV nutrition program directly below.  Also, Dr. Marcel's article in this newsletter focuses on the famous vitamin/mineral formula called the Myers Cocktail and its historically restorative powers.

Then how exciting is this:  in partnership with Boston Heart Diagnostics we are offering thousands of dollars in cardiovascular evaluation tests -- essentially for free! The cost to you is a $35 administration fee plus the cost of a return office call to evaluate the results. The description of this program is also just below.

But wait!  It gets better! For years we have been searching for a far infrared sauna that doesn't come in a big wooden box and cost thousands of dollars.  What is a far infrared sauna?  Well, come into our office and check one out.  But before you do, read the sauna article below.

Finally, in this issue Dr. Connie summarizes some of the lessons we have learned about cancer prevention and treatment, Dr. Marcel speaks of the wonders of the Myers Cocktail, Dr. Corrine writes of how she integrates the her energy work with Reiki and craniosacral therapy and Dr. Vivek continues his offerings on his ayurvedic spring cleanses.

Be Well!

Three Major New Offerings at

Pacific Naturopathic

In our ongoing efforts to serve our patients with the latest, most effective natural health approaches, we are delighted to share our excitement about or latest offerings with our readers...

First: Starting April 29, we will start offering intravenous nutritional therapy in our office.

iv photoThis is a major addition not only to our services, but to our ability to secure dramatic, positive results with safe, effective therapies.

Here's how it works. We will need to see a comprehensive blood test not older than three months. If you have a recent blood test, you will need to have one more lab test, a G6PD, to rule out a genetic condition that is a contraindication for IV therapy.  If you do not have a recent comprehensive blood test, we can order it for you.

Next, you will need a short office visit before onset of treatments to determine if I.V. therapy is safe and appropriate for your needs.  Your unique personal protocol will be discussed with Pacific Naturopathic doctors and you can start IV therapy the same day as the office visit.

We offer a comfortable, quiet, peaceful atmosphere where you may read, work on your computer, listen to music or watch movies (with earphones), or just sit back and relax or nap. There is minimal discomfort.  You will be able to drive yourself to and from the appointment without any difficulty.

At first, we will only be able to accommodate a maximum of four people a day for treatments.  If you feel you may be helped with I.V. therapy, or would like to just explore the possibilities please phone to reserve your space soon.

Click here for detailed information about IV nutritional therapy offered at Pacific Naturopathic.
Second:  Boston Heart Diagnostics has offered Pacific Naturopathic doctors an amazing deal on their Cardiac Risk Assessment blood test, at no out-of pocket cost to you!

Yes, what you read is true.  Standard blood lipid panels (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL) are not predictive of cardiovascular disease. The test we are offering includes proprietary advanced risk tests, and a comprehensive offering of lipid, lipoprotein, apolipoprotein, cardiometabolic, liver, kidney and genetic tests -- four pages of test results, plus a 54-page narrative discussing your results. And best of all, except for a $35 administrative fee,  there is no cost to you! How is this possible? What's the catch?  Click here to read about this extraordinary test.

heart test

The first monthly blood draw for the test will take place on Thursday, May 9.  Space is very limited, so please phone our office to reserve your space. 650-917-1121

Note:  You must be an established patient at Pacific Naturopathic and have health insurance for this special program. Other low-cost options are available for those who do not have insurance. Unfortunately, we are unable to order this test for Medicare patients. The government does not yet allow naturopathic doctors to bill Medicare. A 60-minute return office call is required to discuss your results. The cost of the return office call is $180.

Third: We are delighted to have found a far infrared sauna at a price most of us can afford.

c in sauna
Dr. Connie enjoys the sauna between patients

We have long owned two far infrared saunas -- one at our home here in the Bay Area and one at our Hawaii retreat.  They are both big, bulky wooden structures that dominate the space they are in.

We have reached an arrangement with the manufacturer to distribute a high tech, state of the art portable far infrared sauna for a very reasonable price -- just $995 plus tax.  Shipping is free!

Like to try one before you invest? Easy...we have one in our office specifically for you to try out at no cost.  Just give a call, 917-1121, to make sure the room is free.

There are many reasons why a sauna is one of the best investments you can make for your health.  Click here to read about why we think this is a deal just too good to pass up.

Just Getting Old?

Is it Just the Way That it is?

Patients in their early 40's often come in to the office telling me that they suppose that they're feeling the way that they're feeling because they're just getting old.  Similarly, cancer patients, post chemo and post radiation, tell me that they're told by their oncologists that of course they should feel badly. They are recovering from cancer.

I find that there's something seriously wrong with these assumptions. There are many people more than twice the age of the early 40's patients who don't feel badly. While age may be a contributing factor, it certainly is not the determining factor. And while feeling badly post cancer treatment may be par for the course, feeling badly post cancer treatment is not universal.

It would behoove us to dig a little deeper and to try to understand what is happening here. Recent European research estimates that 86% of European  deaths and 77% of the disease burden are related to diet and lifestyle. Rather than the adverse effects of aging, it is far more likely that stress, poor food choices, lack of exercise, other bad habits, and avoidable and unavoidable environmental toxins of all kinds cause people to feel badly.

With regards to recovering cancer patients, most often it's not the cancer, but the treatments that have adversely affected the patient. While the treatments can be useful and even curative at times, radiation and chemotherapy fall in the realm of environmental toxins.  Unfortunately, within conventional oncology, little or no thought is given to protecting vital organs from toxic treatment effects, to detoxifying  when treatment is complete, to replenishing nutrients that are depleted during treatments, or to restoring the integrity of damaged tissues and systems.

Of course the patient feels badly!  It is left to the patient themselves and to those of us who do adjunctive cancer care to help patients weather and optimize their treatment protocols and, once the protocol is over, to help them recover their health.  (See article below)

Bad New and Good News For Cancer Patients

* * *

What you do does make a difference

Connie Hernandez, N.D.

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

First the bad news. We live in an imperfect and grossly polluted world. We breathe toxins in with every breath we take. As a result, even the cord blood of a newborn infant contains several hundred disruptive chemicals. Add to this mix, the electromagnetic smog generated by our technology and communication systems; the genetically modified and heavily pesticided foods we consume, often without knowing we are doing so; and the chemicalized personal care and cleaning products we use. The list goes on. Even with the best dietary and lifestyle choices, we are inevitably exposed to a range of endocrine disrupting, cancer causing environmental toxins.  Our situation could be construed as depressing and overwhelming.

Now the good news. Even with our current disastrous environment, there are simple dietary and lifestyle choices that can and do make a huge difference in how a person weathers their cancer treatments, how effective the treatments are, how the person feels when the treatments are over, and how susceptible they are to recurrence of their cancer.

Bad news again. Cancer patients are often confronted by their oncologists with terrifying statistics.  Treatment percentages are presented to them. If you do this, you have an 85% chance of living 5 years, as opposed to if you do that, you have a 69% percentage of living 5 years. And so on.

The good news is that the cancer patients we see in our naturopathic practice are not the general population on whom these statistics are based. The general population is generally advised that what they put in to their bodies or what they do in addition to the recommended treatment protocol makes absolutely no difference to the outcome of their treatment. "My doctor says I can eat whatever I want" is a common refrain. In somewhat of a contradiction, the general population is also advised to avoid complementary treatment because it may hamper the efficacy of their conventional treatment protocol.

More good news is that we know better. There is a tremendous body of research sorting out for us just what helps and what hinders the growth and regression of all kinds of cancers. In the past several months, Dr Marcel and I have attended days of lectures detailing out the biochemical pathways, the results of innumerable studies, and the clinical expertise of naturopathic oncologists who team with conventional oncologists. The body of research has grown considerably. And on the basis of that research and of clinical efficacy, we can definitively say that what a cancer patient does does affect the outcome of treatment protocols. Those who take things into their own hands or seek adjunctive cancer care are way ahead of the game.

Here are some of the very simple dietary and lifestyle choices that make a difference in the treatment of cancer, particularly endocrine cancers.

1)     Eat five servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit daily. (One serving is cup raw or 1 cup cooked.) Refer back to the dirty dozen list mentioned last month by Dr. Corrine to know what produce really must be organic to be safe.

2)    Increase dietary carotenoids and bioflavonoids by ensuring that some of those fruits and veggies are richly colored, as in berries and cherries. Or try using our VeryBerry in your smoothies. (VeryBerry is a liquid bioflavanoid supplement, extracted from quantities of multicolored berries.)

3)    Increase the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids in your diet. Consume Omega 3 rich wild salmon twice weekly, walnuts, ground flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, and/or Omega 3 supplementation. Reduce your consumption of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids such as are found in vegetable oils.

4)    Decrease your intake of alcohol. In very susceptible individuals, even one 4 ounce serving of wine daily can adversely affect outcome.

5)    Increase cruciferous vegetables in your diet.

6)    Choose green tea over black tea and coffee.

7)    If you must have milk products, the best would be raw organic milk from pasture fed Jersey cows. However, know that the highest percentages of the disruptive polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the U.S. are found in milk. As is true with radioactive residue.

8)    Reduce your intake of sugar and simple carbohydrates. The extreme of this advice would be the ketogenic diet, found to be therapeutic by cancer treatment centers worldwide.

9)    Increase exercise to at least four hours weekly.

10) Read the labels of your personal care and cleaning products, and go for the simplest products available. More on this in a later issue.

11)   Limit electromagnetic exposure. Don't wear your cell phone on your body. Don't place your laptop on your lap. Turn off wireless connections when you are not using them.

12) Detox by sweating at least twice daily. See the information on infrared sauna in this newsletter, or click here for further information on our website.

13) Try forest bathing. Japanese research has shown that spending time in the company of trees, among other things, increases natural killer cells.

14) Spend time in natural sunlight to build your vitamin D levels.

15) Seek expert advice as to what supplementation is indicated, and what is contra indicated under your treatment protocol.

These are simple guidelines, synergistic in beneficial effect, and under the control of each one of us. What you eat and what you do does make a difference!!!!

Introducing the Myers' Cocktail

 * * *

An IV nutrient therapy that promotes healing
and replenishes energy

                   Marcel Hernandez, N.D.

No, the Myers' Cocktail is not a new alcoholic drink we are recommending.  A Myers' Cocktail is a nutritional mixture given intravenously (IV), or through a vein.  It consists of magnesium, calcium, various B vitamins, and vitamin C.

John Myers, MD, was a Baltimore physician who pioneered the use of intravenous vitamins and minerals as part of the overall treatment of various medical problems. Dr. Myers discovered that by administering his formula intravenously, he could help his patients achieve dramatic results for a number of conditions, including

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with or without Epstein-Barr virus
  • Chronic depression
  • Acute or chronic muscle spasm
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Migraine headaches- often within minutes
  • Tension headaches
  • Narcotic withdrawal
  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • Respiratory problems
  • Acute of chronic asthma
  • Sinusitis
  • Bronchitis
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Ischemic vascular disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Athletes who need quick recovery for athletic events
  • Acute viral illness/colds
  • Acute infections

Dr. Myers also noticed that even relatively healthy patients who received his blend of nutrients enjoyed enhanced well-being for periods of a week to several months.

How does IV Nutrient Therapy Work?

IV administration of nutrients can achieve blood concentrations not obtainable with oral (pills or liquid), or even intramuscular (IM) administration. For example, an IV of Vitamin C can raise the blood levels 50 - 100 times higher than what a person can do taking it orally.  Because of this, a person doesn't develop diarrhea and at these higher blood levels, IV vitamin C can exert effects similar to pharmaceutical drugs such as antivirals (influenza drugs), anti-histamines (Benadryl or Claritin), or smooth muscle relaxants (asthma and angina drugs). IV nutrient therapy is also more effective for correcting nutrient deficits inside cells, where the nutrients are needed.

How many treatments are needed to achieve results?

Patients vary in the number of treatments needed, but most require infusions 1 to 2 times per week. Some patients experience improvement after only one treatment, and many report significant healing by the fourth infusion. People who have chronic conditions may need ongoing treatment of several IV's per week, or periodically every few weeks to regain their energy.

When treating patients with IV nutrition, some patients get progressively better and after a series of treatments no longer require therapy.  Other patients need regularly scheduled infusions in order to better control their medical conditions. In some cases, continued IV therapy may be necessary because a person's disease state is advanced and ongoing IV nutritional support is allows the person to maintain their quality of life.

How is the protocol given?

Dr. Marcel Hernandez mixes all the ingredients with 200mL sterile water in an IV bag. It is infused slowly over a period of 30 to 45 minutes.

Is it safe? What about side effects?

The main side effect of a Myer's Cocktail is feeling better and having improved stamina and energy.  IV Nutrient Therapy is generally very safe, well tolerated and poses minimal if any negative side effects.

If the protocol is administered quickly (we don't do this!) there may be a sensation of warmth and flushing. This is due to the rapid rise of magnesium in the tissues. Some patients may also have the taste of vitamins in their mouth shortly after they are given the infusion.  Dr. Alan Gaby, a well-known researcher and advocate of the use of the Myers Cocktail, said in his paper "Intravenous Nutrient Therapy: The 'Myers' Cocktail,'" that "for most patients the heat does not cause excessive discomfort; indeed, some patients enjoy it."

Dr. Gaby also said that some patients reported a sharpening of their visual acuity and color perception after an injection - an effect that could last as long as a day or two.

Patients taking digoxin (Lanoxin) or potassium-depleting drugs should be cautious and should inform Dr. Hernandez that they are using these medications before beginning the Myers' Cocktail protocol.

Thousands of doctors now regularly use the Myers Cocktail for both treatment of specific conditions and as a type of tonic to improve the well-being of healthy patients and provide an energy boost. Many celebrities have been getting the treatment for years to boost improve their energy, complexions and immune systems. For example, X Factor judge Simon Cowell is an advocate of the treatment and has been quoted as saying that he has it administered on a weekly basis.

How much does a Myers' Cocktail cost and how you can begin treatment.

The cost of a Meyers' IV nutritional cocktail is $125.  If you have more questions or would like to be evaluated to determine if you are a good candidate for IV Nutrient Therapy, please phone Pacific Naturopathic at 650-917-1121.

Intravenous Nutritional Protocols

at Pacific Naturopathic

 * * *

Many disease states compromise the human gut's ability to adequately absorb nutrients like amino acids,
minerals, and vitamins.

* Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, ALS, and Multiple Sclerosis have been shown to greatly benefit from IV antioxidant protocols that help heal the inflammation in the brain often found with these diseases.

* Chronic fatigue states such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Brain Fog have mitochondrial energy deficits shown to be helped when specific natural supplements are given intravenously.

* Many immune system and detoxification functions can be improved with IV protocols.

* A number of cancers are very responsive to IV nutritional therapies which can be used to help treat cancer as well as to improve tolerance of conventional cancer treatments.

* Some treatments involve 1-3 hour drips and others are 30 minute treatments, depending on the nutrient mix and concentration being infused.

To name a few:

            IV Glutathione

            IV Alpha Lipoic Acid

            IV Vit C

            Amino Acid infusions

            Vitamin and Mineral drips

            Myers' Cocktail

Other Protocols for Energy and Immune System Function

We have a dedicated Infusion room that is relaxing and peaceful for all these therapies.

Dr. Marcel Hernandez has been trained in IV therapeutic protocols and will be offering treatments for those patients for whom treatments are appropriate and safe.

Phone now to get on the list for treatment consideration.  650-917-1121.  An initial 30-minute consultation and current blood test is required for existing patients.  A 90-minute first office call and blood test is required for new patients.  Space is limited to four people receiving treatments a day.

Integrating Modalities: How Reiki and Craniosacral Work Together
* * *
Restore, Relax, Heal

Craniosacral therapy can help with many different conditions including chronic pain conditions, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, and more.   The therapy works through deeply relaxing a person, decreasing their stress, and stimulating their own healing systems.

Reiki, another gentle hands-on healing technique, also works in this fashion and can improve many conditions.  Founded in Japan by a Japanese Buddhist monk Mikao Usui, reiki works with the vital energy that flows through our body, or what some people call qi in Chinese medicine, or prana in Ayurvedic medicine.

A reiki practitioner will put their hands on different parts of a person's body during a treatment, and the person may feel warmth, tingling, or other sensations as this vital energy is balancing out.  The treatment can bring a person into a deep space of healing, evening out their nervous system in similar ways that craniosacral therapy can.  Reiki is therefore a great adjunct and combines well with craniosacral work.

During a craniosacral session, I now also use reiki alongside it as a powerful blend to stimulate a person's healing.  Thus, through these therapies, I can help people reach deep levels of relaxation and restoration that can aid the healing process in any number of conditions.

To try this work, Dr. Corrine offers single sessions or package deals.  Please visit her website for more details.

Breast Thermography
at Pacific Naturopathic
Non-Invasive,Radiation Free, Informative

Normal thermog photo
Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information

It is so much easier to prevent a cancer than to cure a cancer. This is true for any condition. If you veer slightly off track in a disease process, it is so much easier to get back on track. Months or years later, when you are way off track and into diagnosable disease, a far more considerable effort is required to change things.

We all have cancer cells growing in our bodies all of the time.  It is estimated that it takes breast cancer cells as much as 10 years to grow to the point where a tumor might be visible on a mammogram. Breast thermography, however, monitors changes in physiology that indicate that a process of some kind is occurring. Thermography does not differentiate whether that process is inflammation or tumor growth. But it does tell us that something is happening. And it does give us a way to monitor whether a given treatment is decreasing the inflammatory nature of the process, or whether the process is heating up and taking off.

This information enables the development and monitoring of anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic treatment protocols that can be put into place years before a tumor might otherwise have a chance to grow and become evident on anatomical monitoring devices such as a mammogram. We call that preventive medicine.

The cost to you of breast thermography is $225.

What is Spring Cleanse & Ayurvedic Pancha Karma?

Dr. Vivek Shanbhag, ND, MD(Ayu), BAMS, CYEd.
Licensed Naturopathic Doctor, Ayurvedic Practitioner & Professor

Pancha Karmas are natural cleansing & rejuvenation procedures for effectively removing accumulated toxins from the body.
Pancha Karmas first loosen the toxins. Next they liquefy the loosened toxins and remove them from the body. Pancha Karma includes use of individualized diets, nutritional supplements, mild fasting (langhana), customized herbal oils( Snehan), sweating (Swedan), herbal purgatives (Virechan), nasal drops (Nasya) and enema therapy (Basti) to rid the body of accumulated toxins.
Unlike many other health-promoting recommendations of Ayurveda, Pancha Karma should not be self-administered. Like all medical procedures, Pancha karma starts with an initial consultation by experienced Ayurvedic doctor who determine your Ayurvedic Mind-Body Type (Prakruti), the nature of the health problem(Vikriti), the type of cleansing to be carried out and its appropriate dosage.
The process is supervised by experienced Ayurvedic doctors who can recognize signs of correct and incorrect cleansing. If required, they take care of any disturbing symptoms and treat them appropriately. The healing effects can be both subtle and profound. For instance, you may begin to notice your skin and eyes glowing. You may feel renewed health and vitality. Many people also experience weight change, according to their needs.

Cleansing at

Pacific Naturopathic in Hawaii

Openings Beginning in May
* * *

While many of our guests simply rent our beautiful View House as a vacation rental, others come to enjoy the opportunity to cleanse and rejuvenate while they relax in Hawaii.

Far infrared sauna awaits your presence

At Pacific Naturopathic Retreat Center, we have very appealing cleansing options.   While we love the portable infrared saunas featured in this newsletter, we also love our more spacious outdoor infrared sauna. This sauna sits on a private deck which overlooks the property. Guests follow a protocol, moving through cycles of infrared sauna to cold shower to cold tub, to infrared sauna.  Ending with a plunge in the cold tub invigorates. Ending with the hot tub relaxes.

Colon therapy is an additional water cleansing option, available when the Drs. Hernandez are on island.  And, for those detoxifying, rebalancing Epsom salts/ baking soda baths, there is a private soaking tub in the View House bathroom.

If you are interested in cleansing your diet, finding creative ways to enjoy those recommended 5 to 7 servings of mostly raw vegetables and fruits is no problem, given the abundance available on the island. Lemons and limes are virtually always available.  Drs. Connie and Marcel supplement their garden produce with produce from any of a multitude of colorful Farmer's Markets on the island.

And then, for cleansing the mind, there's the opportunity to meditate in the Peace Garden, or sit on the bench at the end of the property, soaking in the energy of the earth, of the air, of the fire of the island.  We heartily recommend you try it!

Pacific Naturopathic in Hawaii is also always available for meditation retreats, honeymoons, getaways or as a base for exploring the island.
