The cleanup efforts at Cockrell River Camp will begin upon completion of summer camp sessions being held at Walter Scout Camp at Horseshoe Bend. Information will be forthcoming regarding any service opportunities with the Cockrell River Camp cleanup.
Regretfully, the Sam Houston Area Council will not be able to provide a camping experience at Cockrell River Camp in the summer of 2016.
All summer camp participation will be held at Walter Scout Camp at Horseshoe Bend in 2016. We will be able to provide program opportunities in aquatics, shooting sports and climbing by utilizing those elements at Cockrell River Camp.
As always, our first priority is to provide a meaningful and safe camping experience for our Scouts. We thank you for your continued support.

Sell Popcorn
Sign-Up to sell Popcorn & Register for Training / Participate in Show-N-Sell
Hundreds of thousands of dollars go back to the Scouting program in the Sam Houston Area Council as a result of the annual Trail's End popcorn sale. Over 73% of the sale goes to support local Scouting. The popcorn sale is a way for a Scout to support his or her way through the various activities during the year. For more information, contact your district popcorn kernel or district executive. Check out the popcorn page.
There are three ways to sell popcorn: Units should do all three to maximize fund raising opportunities for their unit! All three count toward Scout Rewards!
Take Order Sales
Unit sign-up & training for traditional take order sales Take order sales are the most traditional way to sell popcorn. Scouts go door-to-door with the take order forms from August 18, 2015 through November 10, 2015. Customers choose the product(s) he or she wishes to buy and writes the order on the order form. Scouts are encouraged to collect the money with the popcorn order to be delivered after November 21, 2015.
Show-N-Sell
Unit sign-up for Show-N-Sell - Deadline to sign up is July 27, 2015, email commitment form to popcorn@shac.org Show-N-Sell is similar to take order sales, except Scouts have the popcorn in hand to sell to customers. All units are eligible to participate if they agree to the terms stated in the commitment order form included in the sign up link. Dens, packs, or troops can also request permission to sell in front of a retail store or chartered organization. Units must agree to use Show-N-Sell to grow and not replace traditional take order sales. The product bundle includes: 36 caramel corn with almonds, 12 white cheddar bags, 24 unbelievable butter microwave, and 96 classic caramel corn. The Show-N-Sell campaign runs from September 1 - September 30, 2015.
Online Popcorn Sales
Scout registration to sell online Selling online is the best way to sell to friends and family who live far away. Online sales count toward Scout rewards including the $650 club, $1800 club and scholarship program. Participants can send emails to friends and family asking them to purchase Trail's End products online. The email includes a link allowing them to begin shopping right away. Customers can pay with a credit card, and the products are shipped directly to the customer by Trail's End. The advantages of online sales is that the Scout doesn't have to collect money or deliver products. Online Sales Campaign runs from August 1 - November 10, 2015.
For more information, please check out the popcorn page

Friends of Scouting
Congratulations to Orion, Antares, Iron Horse, Eagle Trail, Phoenix, North Star, and Raven Districts who have achieved 100% of their Friends of Scouting goal for 2015! Remember, it's not too late to help your district make the last push to get to goal. For more information and resources on how you can help your District's Friends of Scouting team please contact the district executive for your area.

Get Ready For Recruiting!!!!

Right now, most Packs and Troops are enjoying the hot sun and cool pools at SHAC's great summer camp opportunities at Bovay Scout Ranch & El Rancho Cima. Summer is the time when most youth learn through hands on experience, getting to enjoy days in the sunshine and nights under the stars. For unit leaders, now is the time to prepare for the 2015 Fall Recruiting Campaigns!
Each year, thousands of new youth are introduced to the Scouting program by the dedicated volunteers who go out and recruit them. Getting more youth involved in Scouting is, after all, the most important thing that we do! To help us out, the council has developed an easy to use Fall Recruiting plan which will be rolled out in every District by
August 15, 2015, many of which will take place at the August Roundtables! It should be the goal of every unit leader (or an excited representative from your unit) to attend their District's training. Make sure that your unit signs up to attend so you can see all the great new resources the Council is providing this year! Together, we can make this the best year of recruiting that SHAC has seen, and truly live up to our goal of making Scouting available to every youth!
For more information about your district's Fall Recruiting Training dates, please contact your District Executive, your District Membership Chair, check your district website, or contact the council at 713-659-8111.

Spring Woods Methodist Church
1711 Cypress Creek Pkwy
8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. $5.00
The Trainer's EDGE course provides and helps develop the platform skills of a trainer. Trainer's EDGE is part of a continuous process of updating trainers with the latest training methods, principles, and technologies available. Only practice can polish these skills, but this course trains-the-trainer on behaviors and resources while offering hands-on experiences in methods and media. Most of the sessions demonstrate good training methods, but also give participants a chance to interact and actually practice what they have learned.
This conference is for any Scouter who will be delivering training to adult leaders as well as to the young people in Scouting. All trainers, including Pack trainers, District and Roundtable instructors, NYLT and Wood Badge staffers should participate in Trainer's EDGE. To register, please click here.

Summertime Pack Award
What are you doing as a pack this summer? Cub Scouting is best delivered as a year round program. The Summertime Pack Award is designed to encourage a Pack to be active when school is out for the summer, by doing at least one activity per month in June, July, and August. The youth and adult members of a Cub Scout Pack are eligible to earn the recognition by participating in a Pack activity each month during this period.
The completed application is submitted to the Cockrell Scout Center for processing - ideally at the end of August. Individual awards may be purchased when the application is turned in.
Qualifying packs receive a colorful streamer for their pack flag. Dens with an average attendance of at least half their members at the three summer pack events will be eligible for a colorful den participation ribbon. Boys who participate in all three pack events are eligible to receive the National Summertime Pack Award pin, which they can wear on the right pocket flap of their uniform. A Cub Scout who actively participates in his pack's summer activities and earns the Summertime Pack Award each year earns a different pin that matches the neckerchief slide of his program level.
This award can be an incentive for greater attendance at your summer pack activities. Spread the news and get your pack committee planning or fine-tuning their plans for an active outdoor summer filled with fun!

A Scout is Helpful!

It is always important to remind our Scouts to keep up with their service to the community. This is one of the main cornerstones of the Scouting program. Cub Scouts are required to complete service for several rank advancements and Boy Scouts are required to participate in service projects for Second Class, Star, and Life. Many packs, troops, and crews encourage all Scouts to participate in service projects whether they need the hours or not.
Have your Scouts participated in a service project at their Day Camp or summer camp recently, or with a flood recovery\cleanup project? Local food pantries and thrift stores are also always looking for help. Scouts can sort and stock items usually at any time of the year.

Logging in your service hours is quick and easy. All service projects, conservation projects, Eagle projects, and other service counts! For the service hours website, click here.  Unit ID's can be found here.

New Merit Badge: Signs, Signals and Codes

Boys will discover this to be an exciting merit badge with lots of hands on, interactive activities for learning and practicing different types of communications such as Morse code, semaphore, and American Sign Language. The badge also encourages boys to check out cryptography, trail markers, and Braille. There are a variety of different signs, signals, and codes to have fun exploring. This would be an ideal badge to introduce at summer camp and camporees. Competitions between patrols or troops would be greatly enhanced as Scouts challenge each other to send various messages back and forth to accomplish requirements. In addition, they can mark trails and send and receive silent Scout signals. There is definitely something here for everyone. Signs, Signals, and Codes marks the 135th current merit badge. For more information, please click here.

New Lone Scout Friend and Counselor Guidebook Released
The guidebook for Lone Scouts and their counselors has been completely rewritten and can be found at scouting.org/advancement. It replaces the publication by the same name, which was last updated in 2009. The guidebook will be available only online.
The new Lone Scout Friend and Counselor Guidebook briefly describes the program's history and provides well-defined district and council volunteer roles supportive of the program. It describes how Lone Scouting may be the appropriate program for a boy who does not have access to traditional Scouting units because of circumstances in his life. Lone Scouts and their counselors can work together to achieve the best possible outcome when Lone Scouting is the right choice. The guide discusses how to register with the appropriate local council. It also emphasizes the importance of the BSA youth handbooks and stresses the need for safety and youth protection as outlined in the Guide to Safe Scouting, and the value of training for the friend and counselor. Thoughts on resources and potential activities at the local, national, and international level are provided, as well as ideas for connecting with other Scouts. Rank advancement opportunities in Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting, including the merit badge program, are described in general, with references to the appropriate BSA literature for the details.

Add STEM To Your Troop Meetings
There's one surefire way to keep your Boy Scouts coming back week after week: Make your troop meetings as fun as possible. Look for ways to bring new, innovative STEM activities to supplement your Scouting program and bring excitement to your meetings.  Give your Scouts pipe foam and duct tape so they can create an insane miniature roller coaster. Watch as they craft catapults out of sticks and rubber bands to fling marshmallows at other patrols. Let them build robots! The Scouts will have a blast, and you'll love knowing they're learning about STEM - science, technology, engineering and math - in the process. Click here for more information about STEM.  To learn more about what STEM looks like in your Troop meetings click here.

Youth Protection Training

Adults must complete the test with a score of 70% or higher to be considered trained and will receive a training card. A copy of each test will be on file for two years. Classroom Facilitated Youth Protection Training will be available in districts leading up to summer camp and day camp.  Emergency Preparedness Awareness

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is pleased to partner with the Boy Scouts of America to increase the level of citizen preparedness across the country. DHS has asked the Boy Scouts of America to build upon the foundation of the Ready Campaign and to help citizens across the country prepare for emergencies of all kinds.
Emergency preparedness means being prepared for all kinds of emergencies, able to respond in time of crisis to save lives and property, and to help a community-or even a nation-return to normal life after a disaster occurs.

The Emergency Preparedness BSA program is planned to inspire the desire and foster the skills to meet this challenge in our youth and adult members so that they can participate effectively in this crucial service to their families, communities, and nation. Giving Questions / Scouting Answers

Like most donors, your main concern is how to make a gift that best meets your needs or solves a particular problem. You probably don't care about the technical name of your gift, you just want I to be of the most value.
The following are some of our most frequently asked questions and answers regarding giving. Order of the Arrow
The Order of the Arrow is the Scouting National Honor Society.  For 99 years, the Order of the Arrow (OA) has recognized Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. This recognition provides encouragement for others to live these ideals as well. Arrowmen are known for maintaining camping traditions and spirit, promoting year-round and long-term resident camping, developing leaders, and providing cheerful service to others. OA service, activities, adventures, and training for youth and adults are models of quality leadership development and programming that enrich, support, and help to extend Scouting to America's youth. For more information, contact your OA chapter.

Arrowman Service Award
Registered Order of the Arrow members in good standing with the BSA, SHAC and Colonneh Lodge will be able to commemorate our organization's centennial by working to complete the Arrowman Service Award. This award, which some are referring to as "the sash patch," will be recognized as one of the few patches that have ever been approved by the national Order of the Arrow committee to be worn on an OA sash. The purpose of the Arrowman Service Award (ASA) is to encourage Arrowmen to recommit themselves to the ideals of the Order, increase their level of service to their local unit and council, and participate in the 100th anniversary celebration of the OA. The award will have three categories of criteria with various requirements that Arrowmen can complete. These include components on personal growth, service to Scouting, and participation in the centennial celebration.  For an application, click  here.

Ordeals
Boy Scouts who were elected into the Order of the Arrow (OA) by their troop must complete an Ordeal within one year, in order to become a member of Colonneh Lodge. If a candidate does not attend an Ordeal within one-year, then the candidate has to be re-elected by their unit. There are seven Ordeal opportunities in 2015. A candidate can only complete his Ordeal in Colonneh Lodge. For more information, click here.

Section Conclave
July 17-19, 2015 at Texas State University
One hundred years ago, the Order of the Arrow was founded at Treasure Island Scout Reservation. One hundred years later, almost everything about the Order has changed. Some things have changed only slightly, but some things have changed significantly. While we don't wear the same sash or say the same obligation, one thing has remained the same - THE CONSTANT. To find out what it is, come to the 2015 Lone Star Fellowship, the centennial section conclave of Southern Region Section 2-3 South.
Join hundreds of your fellow Arrowmen from the nine lodges in south and central Texas for an incredible weekend of fun and fellowship. Discover the opportunities in scouting and other organizations at our new training experience, the EPICenter. Compete with the other lodges and show off your skills in promotions, ceremonies, dance, and more. And, of course, celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Order of the Arrow with exciting games, inspirational shows, special gatherings, and one of only two ArrowTour stops in Texas.
You don't want to miss this is a once in a lifetime event, so make sure you're at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX on July 17-19 for the 2015 Lone Star Fellowship. To learn more, click here. Click here to register for conclave.

ArrowTour is coming to Section Conclave on the weekend of July 17-19, 2015 at Texas State University. ArrowTour is one of three programs that comprise a year-long celebration of the Order of the Arrow's centennial anniversary. In the summer of 2015, four delegations of youth Arrowmen will travel to council camps and Scouting events to bring our national centennial experience to Scouts, Arrowmen, and communities throughout the country. ArrowTour will provide opportunities to reflect, connect, and discover the Order's Centuries of Service, both past and future. Youth leaders from around the country are already hard at work building the ArrowTour program. The program has been designed for all Scouts, OA members and non-members alike. Whether a first year camper or a seasoned volunteer, the ArrowTour program will offer something for everyone. For more information click here.

OA Troop/Team Representative Summit
Sunday, August 16, 2015 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
The OA Troop/Team Representative Summit is a training experience for OA troop/team representatives and their advisers from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm at the Cockrell Scout Center. The summit focuses on building leadership skills, providing service to the troop and working with the OA troop/team representative adviser.
The summit emphasizes how the OA troop/team representative is a jack of all trades in his various leadership situations. The course also revolves around the OA Unit of Excellence Award and will give Arrowmen an opportunity to develop a plan for their troop to achieve this recognition. Finally, Arrowmen will begin to think critically about crafting their own goals regarding service to their unit. There is no cost to attend the summit.
Lead Your Unit. Be The Catalyst. Inspire Others.
The OA troop/ream representative is a leadership position held by an OA member. He serves as a liaison among the unit, chapter and the lodge. Practically speaking, this gives your unit a voice in the OA and is the avenue through which your troops questions or requests of the OA are addressed.
