New Strake Scout Shop

As a part of the ongoing plan to relocate Camp Strake to its new location in Evergreen, Texas in 2016, a new Strake Scout Shop, named in honor of the Strake family, will serve the northeast section of the Council beginning March 31, 2014. The Strake Scout Shop will consist of 3,000 square feet in Conroe at the intersection of I-45 and S.H. 105 in The Crossroads Center. The hours of operation will be 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday thru Saturday. The shop will be closed on Sundays

The Scout Shop at Camp Strake will permanently close at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, in preparation for the new Strake Scout Shop that will have a soft opening on Monday, March 31. A grand opening and dedication ceremony will occur in early April. Our new Strake Scout Shop will more than quadruple the floor space of the current Scout Shop at Camp Strake.

"The new Strake Scout Shop will be one of the finest in America with the newest Scout Shop designs and it will carry an expanded line of merchandise with more days of operation than the current Scout Shop at Camp Strake, " stated Bill Bomely, BSA Supply Group - Houston Territory Manager.

Scouting for Food Results...Amazing!
Our annual Scouting for Food effort was a great success! Huge thanks to all of our Scouts and leaders that worked so hard on this project to help fight hunger in our community. We had 10,810 Scouts and Leaders from 468 units serve in this project to collect 248,250 pounds to assist those in need! Our Scout Slogan is "Do a Good Turn Daily!" As Scouts, we are reminded to continue to serve others. The Journey to Excellence (JTE) tool is our way to measure and reward success. Service Hour Reporting is a key component for JTE. To reach JTE "Gold" status for Journey to Excellence, Cub Scout Packs and Sea Scout Ships must report four service projects each year. Boy Scout Troops, Varsity Teams and Venturing Crews must report six service projects each year. Follow the instructions to make sure your service hours are reported. Find your unit ID. Enter service hours here Print your Service Hours Certificate, present to your district leadership to receive your Scouting for Food segments at your next roundtable. Questions, contact Cesiah Molina

Spring Membership

Please join us at the Council Coordinated Meeting 7pm Thursday, March 27th at the Cockrell Service Center for more information on membership recruitment.  Here are some suggestions to get started:

For Cub Scout Packs:
This is a perfect time to get with your District Executive and District Membership Team to plan your Packs' Spring Rallies. They can help you get flyers, rally materials, and new ideas for your spring recruitment efforts. Also you can visit the Cub Scout recruitment page. Summer activities such as Day Camp, Twilight Camp, and Resident Camps can help excite new boys with fun activities and build excitement and interest for the fall program. Remember that reaching out into the Schools, Residential Communities, and local businesses to advertise your Spring Rally can help reach and impact more youth.

 For Boy Scout Troops:
Plan a Spring Open House. You can contact your District Executive for a list of all the Webelos who might be looking for a Troop to join to continue their Scouting journey and haven't found that perfect place. If your local Schools allow, plan to have 5th grade lunch visits to advertise your Open House. If you need ideas, flyers, and materials for your open house you can contact your District Executive and District Membership Team.

For Venturing Crews:
Emphasize peer-to-peer recruitment.  Encourage your members to invite a friend to a meeting or an event...like the Venturing Rendezvous on March 15th at Camp Strake in Conroe, TX. This event is designed for all Venture Crews to interact and see all the activities offered in this Program.

National Youth Leader Training (NYLT)

Registration for our summer course at Camp Strake is now OPEN. NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he/she must KNOW, and what he/she must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. Summer 2014 course dates:

14-1 & 14-2: June 8-13, 2014.
14-3 & 14-4: June 16-21, 2014.

Youth Protection Training
Youth Protection Training is required for all leaders to be registered with the BSA every two years. The classroom version (per Texas law) is required within the past 2 years for all adults participating in a long-term camping experience in the state of Texas. This includes day camp scheduled over consecutive days, Cub Scout/Webelos Scout resident camp, summer camp, and winter camp. Adults must complete the test with a score of 70% or higher to be considered trained and will receive a training card. A copy of each test will be on file for two years. Classroom Facilitated Youth Protection Training will be available in Districts leading up to summer camp and Day Camp. You may also check web sites of neighboring districts.

Nominations for Silver Beaver Award

The Silver Beaver Award was introduced in 1931 and is a Council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America. This is the highest recognition a Council can bestow on an adult volunteer leader. To nominate a person for the Silver Beaver Award, the deadline for submission is May 1, 2014. More:

Purchasing Advancement Awards
