Scouting for Food, Feb.  1

Today is the day Scouts will pick up doorstep donations.  We have 27% more  units serving in this project to assist those in need!  Logging in your donations will help us reach 100,000 more pounds this year and qualify you for the Scouting for Food segment patch.  The Journey to Excellence (JTE) tool is our way to measure and reward success.  Follow the instructions to make sure your service hours are reported. Find your unit IDEnter service hours here  Print your Service Hours Certificate, present to your district leadership to receive your Scouting for Food segments at your next roundtable. Friends of Scouting
The money raised through Friends of Scouting helps offset the cost of recruiting, training and providing programming to youth and adults in the Council.  Join us on February 20th, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. for the Family FOS All-Inners Dinners for a campaign update, fellowship and best practices sharing to help your district achieve success.   

 

Celebrating a Century of Service

On Saturday, April 12th, 2014 from 10 am - 3 pm, Scouts from 16 counties will unite at SCOUT FAIR at Reliant Arena to showcase their Scouting skills and participate in fun-filled activities. Ten Commandment Hike, Feb. 22  

The Sam Houston Area Council is hosting the 19th Annual Ten Commandments Hike in conjunction with Scout Sunday and Scout Sabbath which occur earlier in February.  We will host four different routes: The Museum District Hike will feature some of the older churches in the Museum District southeast of Downtown.  A Kingwood area hike will meander through the wooded areas and view newer sanctuaries with somewhat more modern motifs.  The Southwest Hike is in the beautiful Sugar Land area.  The Downtown Houston Hike, will take place along towering skyscrapers that make Houston so unique.  Participants will enjoy viewing these historic and modern places of worship and hearing a brief explanation of one of the Ten Commandments.  The hike includes an embroidered patch for each participant.  This is a walking event covering the hours of 9:00AM to 4:00PM. $5.00 per participant.  Register here   For additional information, contact: George Etier, 713-677-4159 email George Etier;

Nominations for Silver Beaver Award
The Silver Beaver Award was introduced in 1931 and is a Council-level distinguished service award of the Boy Scouts of America. Recipients of this award are registered Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the Council. This is the highest recognition a Council can bestow on an adult volunteer leader. To nominate a person for the Silver Beaver Award, the deadline for submission is May 1, 2014. More: 
  

Purchasing Advancement Awards 
Units will need to turn-in final advancement reports from Internet Advancement in order to purchase advancement awards at Houston area Scout Shops.  Draft-advancement reports will not be accepted, as this indicates that the listed advancements have not yet been posted to the Scout's records.  Be sure to check the bottom of your report to ensure it does not indicate "DRAFT" before going to the Scout Shop.  If you should have any questions please contact the Scout office and ask for assistance with internet advancement.

The new online tour and activity plan has been developed and is active. Please go to www.myscouting.org. You do not need a tour plan for Council sponsored activities or camping at Council camps. For the Council's Guidelines on when to file a tour plan, Click Here.

Certification Required  - If your unit is planning on hosting an event that requires certification (Shooting, Boating, Swimming, Climbing, etc.) you must provide certification information on your TOUR PLAN and present a copy of the certification to the Ranger / Campmaster before beginning the activity. More
  
  
Wood Badge Adult Leadership Course
Wood Badge is a six-day advanced leadership course offered four times per year for Scout Leaders involved in all program levels- Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Participants will learn techniques to become better leaders. 2014 Spring Course & Summer Course  information

National Youth Leader Training (NYLT)
Registration for our summer course at Camp Strake is now OPEN. NYLT is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he/she must KNOW, and what he/she must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. Summer 2014 course dates:

14-1 & 14-2: June 8-13, 2014.
14-3 & 14-4: June 16-21, 2014.
  

Youth Protection Training
Youth Protection Training is required for all leaders to be registered with the BSA every two years. The classroom version (per Texas law) is required within the past 2 years for all adults participating in a long-term camping experience in the state of Texas. This includes day camp scheduled over consecutive days, Cub Scout/Webelos Scout resident camp, summer camp, and winter camp. Adults must complete the test with a score of 70% or higher to be considered trained and will receive a training card. A copy of each test will be on file for two years. Classroom Facilitated Youth Protection Training will be available in Districts leading up to summer camp and Day Camp. You may also check web sites of neighboring districts. more here
  
Enterprise Risk Management 
Enterprise Risk Management Guide For Units - The purpose of this guide is to prepare adult leaders to conduct Scouting activities in a safe and prudent manner. Policies and guidelines have been established because of the need to protect members from risk and hazards that have been identified through one hundred-plus years of Scouting experience. Communicate the importance of incident and near-miss reporting and hold staff members accountable for implementing reporting procedures at unit, district, and council levels.

Bovay Scout Ranch is looking for Seasonal Camp Staff to work weekends.  
Job consists of working closely with youth and parents at different program areas we call outpost. The Camp will furnish food and lodging. Earning the rank of Eagle Scout is just the beginning of lifetime of service. This is the perfect opportunity to give back (and meet fellow Eagles) in the area you call home. The spring project is at Memorial Park doing conservation work. Work will begin at 9 am and go to 1 pm with lunch being provided. More

Scouts beginning the merit badge prior to Jan. 1 may use the current requirements. A Scout who has already earned the merit badge will not have to re-earn it with the revised requirements    
 
First Aid Meet, Feb. 15
The 36th Council First Aid Meet is Saturday, February 15, 2014 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer at Edloe St. Each district is allowed TWO (There can be no ties) representative teams from Boy Scout Troops. (This is a Boy Scout program only). Winning teams representing the district must be from regular existing (natural) patrols. . Each team should be composed of five members.  For each problem, there will be four performers and one victim and any other patrol members must "sit out". The Patrols will compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The cost for the 2014 Council First Aid Meet is $25.00 per patrol. more 

 

 

 

23rd World Scout Jamboree - Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi, Japan (July 28-Aug 8, 2015)

Eligible participants must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America as a Boy Scout or Venturer and have been born between July 27, 1997 and July 28, 2001. New Eagle Scout Reception, May 18

The hard work is done, now reap the rewards. Eagles and their families do not want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be recognized by two accomplished Eagle Scouts: Outstanding Eagle Scout Scott Parazynski, MD and Eagle Scout Sam Malone. Scott Parazynski, medical doctor, former astronaut, physician and inventor will be our guest speaker. Currently he serves as the Director and Chief Medical Officer of UTMB's Center for Polar Medical Operations in Galveston. Sporting Clays, April 24th

Join the 18th Annual Sporting Clays Tournament at the Rio Brazos Hunting Preserve in Simonton, TX scheduled for Thursday, April 24th to support the Sam Houston Area Council's Scouting programs for at-risk youth. Over $1 Million Raised for Endowment in 2013
The Sam Houston Area Council, BSA is excited to announce that the Cockrell Match Program was a big success. A special thank you to the 66 plus volunteers who gave their time and talents to promote the Cockrell Match Program to the Scouting Community. During 2013, 135 donors gave $297,451 to Endowment. All gifts to Endowment which include The Cockrell Foundation Match totaled $2,681,080, an increase of 63.1% over last year.
 
The Cockrell Foundation has renewed the Cockrell Match Program for 2014.  Thanks to the generosity of The Cockrell Foundation, gifts from $500 up to a lifetime cumulative maximum of $25,000 will be matched dollar for dollar. Take advantage of this program now until December 15th, 2014
