Whatever You Do . . .
Mrs. Seefeld writes an amazing theme song!

CHORUS

Whatever you do, wherever you go -

Do it all to the glory of God, and with all of your soul.

Whoever you meet, whatever you say - may you honor the glory of God,

Yes, the glory of God - in whatever you do.

Think of yourself as an act of wor-ship

Give of yourself as a service to God.

HE gave us tasks since the time of Creation,

So honor HIM - not man - in all that you do ... whatever you do ... CHORUS

Keep this in mind:  it is CHRIST you are serving!

Whatever you do - don't sigh or complain!

Lift up your eyes!  Your reward is awaiting!

A heavenly inheritance, our heavenly home!   ... whatever you do ... CHORUS

Yes!  This school year we are all to be reminded that WHATever we do, WHERever we go, WHOever we meet, WHENever we interact, WHYever we are called upon --- It is the HOWEVER we perform the service that matters most.  Your teachers and entire staff pledge themselves to Christ, loving your kids, quality instruction, the intentional pursuit of excellence and customer service.  Join us in this journey so that WHATEVER we do - it IS DONE TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

We thank Mrs. Seefeld for reminding us in such a wonderful way of Colossians 3:23-24.  We love the song and thank YOU for your service!  We also thank Pastor Henke for sharing the introduction to our school theme as he led Chapel on the first day of school!
We are off and RUNNING!
Temperatures make the first weeks interesting!

We want to thank all of our students, parents and grandparents who helped to make our first three weeks of school go so smoothly despite the heat surge.  So much went so well:
  • Traffic drop-off at 8 AM and pick-up at 3:30 PM have gone very well because our families are parking in the school lot rather than at the neighbors' (Schmidt Bartlelt or Serafino Square), paying careful attention to the marked 'through' lanes and crosswalk, and slowing down to a careful crawl as they enter and exit the campus.  Your patience and attention to the rules for everyone's safety is most appreciated.
  • Health room and parking lot volunteers, library helpers and so many others are already pitching in to keep everything humming around ORLS.
  • Volunteer Hours are already being reported  via ths email address (volunteer@ orlctosa.org) or by use of the blue report page available in the school office.  Remember:  VBS hours can count from your service in July 2013!
  • Lunch and Child Care payments are coming in primarily on Mondays, which really helps your office staff.  PLEASE continue to keep your accounts current.  Remember:  hot lunch and Child Care payments need to be made by separate checks as one is a government and the other a business account.
  • We continue to receive updated phone numbers, addresses, etc. that have changed over the summer months or since the time of enrollment.  THANKS!
  • Students who will miss school due to illness and other reasons for absence are being called in absent by parents to the school office by 8:30 AM.
  • If called because their child has become ill at school, parents have been prompt in their pickup or send someone authorized to get them home where they will be more comfortable.
  • We have received many updated immunization forms which we need before the Tosa Health Department comes to check on our students' records.
  • Cool treats were provided to many classrooms to keep our kids comfortable during the high and humid temperatures - especially the first two weeks of school.  We appreciate your thoughtfulness.
National Lutheran School Accreditation Update

Celebrating Progress and PotentialNLSA

On Tuesday, November 13, 2014, a National Lutheran School Accreditation (NLSA) visit will  document our on-going progress and improvement since our last accreditation in 2009 at which time ORLS was named an "LCMS Exemplary School." The new 2014-2019 ORLS On-Going Improvement Plan for NLSA identifies the following four goals for the next five-year NLSA cycle:

  • RELATIONSHIPS ~ Our Redeemer will provide a Christian educational framework that involves and encourages relationship with our school families and congregation, as well as the whole of the community around us.
  • ACADEMICS ~ Our Redeemer will pursue academic excellence through intentionally refining our curriculum mapping, incorporating multiple intelligences approaches into our lessons, and communicating learning objectives to our students.
  • FINANCE ~ the school operates with the financial resources to achieve excellence in Christian education.
  • TECHNOLOGY ~ The integration and use of technology tools is a natural part of the teaching and learning process.

A complete copy of the objectives, strategies and actions that will be enacted over the next five years is available from the School Principal upon request.  We thank our teaching staff, NLSA Steering Committee, parents and students who have contributed their opinions, thoughts, suggestions and survey responses to assist us in crafting this solid NLSA On-Going Plan!

Constant Contact Database Refreshed
With changes in our office technology it was time to update our distribution list for this News & Notes publication.  After three years of adding new families, it was time to clean out and refresh our mailing list.  The problem arises when emails are not obvious in their appearance and we cannot tell whether this is a family who graduated their last student from ORLS, possibly a grandparent from the past, or students' families who have left Our Redeemer.  Hence, we have used what appeared to be the primary email supplied by each of our families for the school year.

*** If your family would appreciate receiving News & Notes at additional email addresses, please contact the school office by telephone (414-258-4558) or email Lynn at lynn.lenz@orlctosa.org to add another email for your family to our mailing list.  We are happy to help you in doing so!

School Lunch
As of today (Friday, Sept. 6) Kemp's milk is being served in our hot lunch program as supplied through a new distributor.  We had some concerns and complaints about the company used prior to this change, so we have - in turn - made, what we hope will be, a noticable improvement in that area.

You may notice that this year Friday will be "Pizza Day" as main entree number one.  Any form of pizza on the menu appears to be a 'fan favorite,' so regular pizza or pizza dippers will be an option every Friday.  Of course, if pizza is not your child's choice, another entree - option two - will be available as well.

Finally, we welcome Donna Smallwood to our kitchen staff.  She brings food service experience to our kitchen team.  We also thank Laura Waldron for three great years of service and wish her well in future pursuits.

Picture Day is Coming!
Wednesday, September 18, is Picture Day at ORLS.  The retake on pictures and first takes for 3K T-TH students is October 29th.  Watch for the photography information to come home soon!

We Welcome the Wauwatosa Police Department to ORLS ... SCHOOL SAFETY FIRST!
As in the past two years, we will hold a 'lockdown drill' at ORLS.  Our Tosa School Liasion Officer, Joel Kutz, will arrive on Tuesday, September 10th, with a cadre of officers who will do a wrap-around sweep of our entire campus as we practice a drill needed should we have an intruder in the building.  Following the drill, officers will visit each classroom  and answer students' questions as time allows.  We have found this to be extremely helpful and reassuring as we want to be prepared in such an event.  Our entire Crisis Management Plan is also submitted to the WPD for their suggestions and feedback.  Teachers will prepare students for this practice drill in advance.  We appreciate the help and vigilance of the WPD in this effort.  Safety first!

On-line Grades are Coming, gr. 5 - 8

Parents will be receiving an "Invitation" from LearnBoost, the online grading system being piloted in grades 5-8 this year.  Look for an email with the header "Join Me on LearnBoost," and then follow the simple directions to get started. You will receive a separate invitation for each of your child's core classes. Please remember to give your child's teacher a week's worth of lead time to record grades for completed assignments.  Grades will be updated by 9 PM on Monday evenings.   If you have questions, please email your teacher at firstname.lastname@orlctosa.org.  We are excited to begin this pilot program.  Final prepartions are being made and some tweeks may be needed along the way, so we thank you for your patience in advance!

Great News and Needed Information

The ORLS Library opened this week and the students were able to discover new books added to the collection this summer.

Our E-BOOK collection also became available to our students. Classroom teachers gave students their library user name and passwords this week.

To checkout an e-book students need to follow these steps:

  • Download the correct app for the device that you will be using. These apps can be found on the Follett web site http://www.aboutfollettebooks.com/app-shelf.cfm
  • Apple device users can go to the Apple App store and search for the Follett reader. Be sure to select the app for the correct device.
  • You will need the URL: https://wbb37608.follettshelf.com and your library username and password.
  • Once the reader is downloaded you can also access Follett Shelf through the ORLS library site: orlctosa.follettdestiny.com. When accessing Follett Shelf from our Destiny site you do not have to type in the URL for the shelf. Select "FOLLETT SHELF" on the bottom of the menu bar on the left side of the page.
  • Once on the SHELF you will select the book that you wish to check out. You can scroll through the books shown or search the e-book collection when selecting a book. Check out the book by dragging the book to the blue checkout box at the bottom of the page. The book will be returned to the shelf in 2 weeks.
  • If you have e-book questions you can use the link: http://www.aboutfollettebooks.com/faqs.cfm or contact Mrs. Clinard at maryjane.clinard@orlctosa.org
  • Due to the limited number of books that are available you will only be able to checkout one e-book at a time.
