MISSION STATEMENT
Our Redeemer Lutheran School exists to provide Christ-centered
quality education by bringing Jesus Christ into the lives of our
students and their families, thereby equipping them for service
to the world as they share the Good News!

ANCIENT WORDS

Holy words, long preserved, for our walk in this world. They resound with God's own heart, let the ancient words impart.

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."   Micah 5:2

Words of life, words of hope, Give us strength, help us cope. In this world where we roam, ancient words will guide us home.

"I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will crush your head, and you will smite his heel."     Gen.3:15

Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you; We have come with open hearts, O, let the ancient words impart.

"And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6

Holy words of our faith handed down to this age, came to us through sacrifice, O, heed the faithful words of Christ.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." Matt. 5:8

EXPECT A MIRACLE!

Please mark Sunday, December 9th, as an important date to worship with your family! We will celebrate Consecration Sunday together and be challenged to respond to God's love which comes down from above. As we worship together, hear God's Word, pray for guidance, and consider the challenges of  our common future, we shall be reminded that the reason for this season of sacrifice is our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. You will be asked to answer this question: "Is anything too HARD for the LORD?" Your presence and participation will make our attempt to contact every family so much easier.

Pray for our success. Plan now to attend.

Congratulations on the First Lego League Honors!

Girls Scouts Jessica Gatewood, Rebecca Gatewood, Aleksey HIcks, Janelle Johnson, Natalie Wessel, and Hannah Willer competed in the

First Lego League Regional competition as Team 3137 at the

Marquette High School on Sunday, November 19th, and advanced to the State competition!  This competion was sponsored by already in the summer!

The Scouts completed three components:  core values, a competition presentation, a Lego robotics section where they had to meet the challenges described for the robot.  These young ladies even won an award for robot design!  We wish them luck at the state competition in Mukwonago on December 8th.  Way to go team and best of luck at State!

Dress for the WEATHER!

Please make sure that your student is dressed for the changing weather conditions in Wisconsin. Recess is a special time for students as they soon look forward to climbing the snow mounds or just catching some fresh air at recess time.  It is  imperative that they come dressed for the lower temps and snowy playground.  Hats, mittens, gloves and snowpants are required if they are going to enjoy the outdoors to its fullest.  Also, PLEASE CLEARLY MARK their items such as boots so that, if lost, these expensive items can return to their rightful owner.  Thanks!

Upcoming Events

Science Fair "Tutorials," Gr. 5 - 8

The Science Fair for grades 5 - 8  is approaching sooner than you might think!  Projects are due on Friday, February 8th at the beginning of the school day.  They will be judged on Friday and Saturday and then the Science Fair will be open to the public from 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM on Sunday, February 10th.

Where and how do we begin?  is often the question parents and students ask.  So - to satisfy the educational process informational meetings will be held for the appropriate grades for 15-19 minutes following each Advent Service.  All fifth grade parents are invited to the cafeteria on December 5 following the Advent Service for a brief meeting to learn about the upcoming Science Fair.  This year all 5th - 8th grade students will be required to participate in the science fair.  This meeting will provide parents and students with an overview of the requirements and important information needed to begin their science project.  In addition, sample projects will be available to view.  Please contact David Williamson or Kirsten Willer if you have any questions.

All gr. 6 - 8 parents will be similarly invited following their Christmas service on December 19th.   Since these students have participated before, unless they are new to ORLS since the last Science Fair, this will be a Q & A session for everyone interested and templates and examples will be on display rather than having a formal meeting.  Teachers will also be available to ask your questions.  We want to assist you in any way we can!

 OTHER NEWS . . .

Volunteering ~ a GIFT that Keeps on Giving!

Three months down and six to go!  How are you doing on your volunteer hours?  Some of our families have already completed their required number of hours.  Congratulations!  The good news is they continue to VOLUNTEER anyway!  How about your family?  Will some special event in the future be your opportunity to SERVE? Please remember and plan accordingly to satisfy your hours ~ together we are BETTER!

  • 5th & 6th Grade parents (or anyone interested in gr. 5/6 BB)...  Looking to earn volunteer hours while having a front row seat to your son's or daughter's riveting home basketball game?  We are looking for parents to help keep the scorebook and run the clock for the 5th and 6th grade home games.  No experience necessary and Mrs. Sapiro will be on hand to "tutor" anyone interested in learning.  Contact Mrs. Sapiro (ext. 238)
  • Would you like to bake 2-3 dozen Christmas cookies or bars for December 11th?  It would assist your ORLS staff to provide a treat for our Wauwatosa Police and Fire Departments as a 'thank you' for their work on our behalf.  Call the school office if you would be willing to spend an hour or two to provide treats for these public servants who seldom 'see' thanks.  We'd like to get enough bakery to make three large trays for the three shifts at each department.

  • See the PTL link (above) for  BB Tournament signup online!

  • Do you have some AM or PM time the week before Christmas vacation?  We need 1 more person to assist in clearing our library shelves so that they can be reinforced over the holiday break.  Call the School Office and we will suit your schedule!
  • Your Tournament Committee is still looking for an individual to fill the role of Half-time contest contact person. This person is not required to attend all tournament games, but be a contact person for the individuals who volunteer for that part of the tournament. If you are interested in helping please contact Erin Janetzke (erin.janetzke@orlctosa.org)
  • The tournament is also looking for individuals to help with decorating the hallways, cafeteria, and gym before the tournament begins. Please contact Erin Janetzke (erin.janetzke@orlctosa.org)
  • Referee 5th and 6th grade basketball games at ORLS (as suits your schedule.)  Contact Jamie Kohlmeier, ext. 246.
  • Christmas program preparations - choose from a variety of jobs:  artwork and/or scenery, practice assistance, sit with groups during actual Christmas program, props & costumes help, etc.  Contact teachers of the grade level you are interested in helping.
  • Painting stair railings at your own schedule - even throughout the school year.  Contact Michael Wormsbacher at ORLS.
  • Do you work in an auxilary organization of ORLS that could use the help of volunteers?  Please call the school office to make your needs known!

Pedometers
Document Activity!

Purpose Statement: Use of pedometers is to give students a 'real time' look at their activity level as they participate in P.E. class. It can become a motivation technique used between students (who can get the most steps), the teacher (get X amount of steps in this class period) or on an individual basis (try to get more steps than previous day). It also gives Mr. Timm a way of assessing the level at which each student participates in daily class activities. Finally, they show students easy ways they can continue to stay active through their lifetime.

Benefits:

  • Provide an opportunity to integrate technology into P. E. classes
  • Students have a visual of how much they move around during a given class/time period
  • Students learn the use of a technology tool to continue to be physically fit throughout their lives
  • Serve as accurate activity level totals for assessments
  • Offer opportunity for cross-curriculum connections; tracking # of steps taken in day, wk., month, year
  • Follows the state of Wisconsin's DPI standards that are to be used in schools

DPI Standard  #3 - Students participate regularly in physical activity.

  • 3:2:A4 (Standard 3, Gr. 3-5, Sect. A4) Monitors his or her physical activity by using a pedometer to count the number of steps taken or the distance traveled.
  • 3:3:B1 (Standard 3, Gr. 6-8, Sect. B1) Maintains a pedometer log for a minimum of two weekdays and one weekend day.

Who uses them? The goal for pedometers is to use them in gr. 5-8 on a daily basis as a % of their grade. Students wear the pedometer during each class period, unless the teacher feels the activity would be better off without the use of them (higher risk of pedometer falling off during activity). Mr. Timm will be able to use them in gr.3-4 for small units. In gr. 5-6 this would not be part of a grade for the students, but a way to introduce pedometers to them.

When will students start using them? 7th & 8th gr. will start using pedometers on Dec. 3rd and use them until winter break as a pilot program. Use in gr. 5-6 will be announced when it begins.
