Love is respect
February is known as the month of love. Unfortunately, for too many of our teenagers, the lines between love and abuse are painfully blurred. That's why February is also Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Statistics show that one out of every five teens is involved in a dating violence relationship by the time they leave high school.
In a world where unhealthy relationships are glamorized by print, film and internet media, our young people are challenged to know what a healthy relationship looks like. With the support of Collier County Public Schools, The Shelter's Healthy Relationships program helps teens recognize different types of abuse, the dynamics of dating violence, characteristics of unhealthy and healthy relationships, and how to set boundaries in a relationship. Last year, this program conducted 152 presentations to over 7,783 middle and high school students in our community.

It's not always easy to talk to friends and family about dating abuse and healthy relationships, but it's so important. Through open communication, we build support systems and stronger relationships with the people around us.
So let's start the conversation. If you are a parent, friend or relative of a teenager, learn more about teen dating violence. Find out more about the warning signs, prevention and intervention at http://www.loveisrespect.org. Take the healthy dating quiz.
Prevention is paramount to The Shelter's mission to Prevent, Protect and Prevail over domestic violence. Learn more about how you can support us at www.naplesshelter.org
