Middle School Program Wraps Up Another Season

Directed by Helen Peters, AAACTA's 2013 Middle School Tennis Program was again a great success. There were over 175 students from the six Ann Arbor middle schools participating in the after-school program, which started in April and ran for seven weeks. The 12th season ended with a rockin' ralleyball tournament at the UM Varsity Tennis Center on June 7. This year's Middle School Tennis Program was supported in part by a generous grant from the Midwest Youth Tennis & Education Foundation, a philanthropic entity of the USTA's Midwest Section, and by the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center, one of the finest tennis facilities in the country.

Congratulations to Helen Peters, Recipient of This Year's Beyer Award!

The William F. Beyer Award (named after one of the first SEMTA presidents) is given to an individual who has contributed immeasurably and unselfishly to tennis. Helen Peters, who has been an active member and officer of AAACTA for many years and currently serves as our Treasurer, received the 2012 Beyer Award from SEMTA at their annual meeting last November. The following article about her appeared in the SEMTA newsletter:

Helen Peters' involvement with our District began in the summer of 2000, when she volunteered to assist at our USTA League Championships in Ann Arbor. She worked tirelessly the entire weekend. We knew we had a "keeper." Helen's involvement with the Southeast Michigan District expanded quickly. In 2002, she became a member of our District League Committee as well as a Delegate on our Board. In 2008, Helen became Vice President of the District and then in 2010, was elected to District President. It had been 12 years since the office of the President was held by a non-tennis industry professional.

The Ann Arbor Area Community Tennis Association is close to Helen's heart, where she has been a board member for more than 10 years, serving as secretary and currently as treasurer. As one of the primary coordinators of AAACTA's middle school program for last 10 years, Helen is delighted that more than 175 sixth graders at six public middle schools in Ann Arbor are introduced to the great sport of tennis annually. . . .
