Annual Member Show & Nat'l Juried Competition Exhibition Opening August 15th

AWA's 17th Annual Master & Signature Member Show & National Juried Competition Exhibition opens August 15th at the Addison Art Gallery in Orleans, Massachusetts. All attending exhibiting artists are invited to a Meet & Greet Welcome Reception at the gallery on Thursday evening, Aug. 14th, from 6:00-8:00pm.

The Awards Ceremony & Breakfast for exhibiting artists will be held at the gallery on Friday, Aug. 15th from 8:30 - 10:00am, with the Awards Ceremony starting at 9:15am, after which the exhibit officially opens to the public.

An opening reception will be celebrated on Saturday, August 16th, from 4:00-7:00pm.

The entire exhibit will be juried for awards by Erin Coe, Chief Curator for the Hyde Collection, Glens Falls, NY.  This year's prize packages total almost $30,000, with the Best of Show prize package valued at $9500 (which includes a $3000 cash award).  Our Masters and Signatures Member Show will be judged for Gold, Silver, and Bronze placings in both membership levels; prize packages in those categories have increased significantly this year as well, after AWA introduced awards at these levels at last year's exhibition to recognize our valuable Master and Signature members.

These awards would not have been made possible without the generosity of our show sponsors.

As a non-profit arts organization dedicated to encouraging, promoting and presenting the work of women artists at the national level, AWA relies on the support of its sponsors to accomplish this mission.

Full Schedule of Events for Annual Show at the Addison Art Gallery

A full slate of fantastic artist demonstrations and talks have been scheduled during the 17th Annual Member Show & National Juried Competition Exhibition

at the Addison Art Gallery in Orleans, MA. These demos/artist talks are open to the public, as AWA members share their talents, knowledge, and experiences as artists.

Thursday, August 14, 3:00-5:00pm: So Many Choices!

Signature member Jeanne Mackenzie will complete a plein air painting, as she shares her methods on choosing a good composition, an inviting design, correct values and colors that sing.

Friday, August 15, 3:00-4:00pm: The Plein Air Painting Addiction

Signature member Grace Schlesier, award-winning oil painter, will give a short history of plein air painting and share some of her interesting experiences in the field. She feels summer has the power to evoke a variety of memories, especially those from the shore.

Saturday, August 16, 9:30-11:00am: Dialogue from the Field: Two Artists Share Perspectives

Master Signature members Bethanne Kinsella Cople and Ann Larsen will demonstrate the process of working from a small plein air study to create a larger painting. These entertaining women will discuss the value of peer critiques and share amusing stories about painting in the field.

"If you're going to succeed as a landscape painter you need to spend many hours painting out in nature.  Painting 'en plein air' can be one of the most challenging endeavors an artist undertakes but the knowledge gained is worth the effort, " says Ann Larsen. "All the hours spent in the field yields hundreds of small color studies and compositional sketches that I can later use to create larger paintings in the studio."

Sunday, August 17, 3:00-5:00pm: Relax and let your Muse do the Work

Signature member Leah Lopez will share her experiences and demonstrate what can be done when things aren't clicking and the paint isn't flowing, so you can get back into the work.

Wednesday, August 20, 3:00-5:00pm: Colorist Painting Demonstration

Associate member and juried artist Susan Overstreet will paint plein air on the gallery's lawn. Susan is an Impressionist who works with acrylics using energetic and dramatic brushwork.

Saturday, August 23, 3:00-5:00pm: Painting Flowers from Life in Oil

Associate member and juried artist Jenny Kelley will demonstrate her process of painting from direct observation, which includes using a wet-on-wet technique to capture the beauty of the flowers quickly.

Saturday, September 13, 3:00-5:00pm: Painting the Landscape

Associate member and juried artist Valerie Craig will demonstrate her approach to painting a landscape, using sketches, small plein air studies and photographs. She will discuss how she uses reference materials in designing a piece as she works to complete a finished piece.
