"Parents are the ultimate role models for children. Every word, movement and action has an effect. No other person or outside force has a greater influence on a child than the parent."
--Bob Keeshan

Life is complicated, and it never seems more so than during legislative session. This week the House and Senate release their budgets, and the outcome ultimately negotiated will have significant impact on the future of children and families in Washington. At the same time, the Presidential primaries are rushing forward. The level of discourse among the candidates is often frustrating, and sometimes downright frightening. Will we elect a president who will work to improve outcomes for children and families, particularly those most lacking in opportunity? We sure hope so.

In the midst of this there are actions in government and the private sector that provide some signs of hope, and we share some briefly here. And through it all we always come back to parents. We are grateful to the more than 1,500 Washington medical providers who each day bring hope to families through the gift of a children's book, and the encouragement to parents that they "have what it takes" to help their children learn. Impact starts at home, and as the study highlighted below demonstrates, Reach Out and Read is part of the solution for families.

Providing opportunity for young children is a critical investment in the future of society. It is not, and cannot be, a partisan issue. So we reaffirm our commitment to stay involved in the political process, at the same time as we take steps to support the children and families right in front of us. Thank you for doing the same.

Teen Moms Benefit From Reach Out and Read

The importance of maternal well-being for child outcomes is well known, as are the challenges faced by teen moms. A new study, Reach Out and Read is Feasible and Effective for Adolescent Mothers, is particularly exciting.  The pilot study showed that mothers in the intervention group (participating in Reach Out and Read) were significantly more likely than controls to report reading as one of the child's favorite activities and had significantly lower maternal depression scores.

Executive Action for Children and Families

Governor Jay Inslee issued an executive order creating the Washington State Blue Ribbon Commission on the Delivery of Services to Children and Families. The Commission is tasked with making recommendations to create a new state agency.

According to the Governor, "Of all the resources we have in the state of Washington, our children are by far the most precious. But while we have entire state agencies dedicated to priorities like Natural Resources, Revenue, and Transportation, we do not have a department specifically dedicated to our children. Today, we are beginning the process to change that."

Community Foundation of South Puget Sound Supports Reach Out and Read

We are grateful to the Foundation for generous support for Reach Out and Read programs in Lewis, Mason, and Thurston Counties. There are 9 programs serving an estimated 7,000 children and their families in these three counties, which have large numbers of children living in poverty. Geographic diversity is an important part of our equity strategy. This grant helps assure doctors can implement high quality programs that meet the needs of the families they serve. Thank you to the Community Foundation for visionary support for parents and young children in South Puget Sound!
