The Newburgh Senior Center Afternoon with an Author
There I grew up

The Newburgh Senior Center, 529 Jefferson St., Newburgh, IN is pleased to announce that William (Bill) Bartelt, author of "There I Grew Up: Remembering Abraham Lincoln's Indiana Youth", will be the featured author for the February Afternoon With An Author.  The event will be held on Sunday, February 17 from 2 to 4 pm at the Center.

In his book, published in 2008, Bartelt uses annotation and primary source material to tell the history of Lincoln's Indiana years by those who were there. The book reveals, through the words of those who knew him, Lincoln's humor, compassion, oratorical skills and thirst for knowledge, and it provides an overview of Lincoln's Indiana experiences, his family, the community where the Lincolns settled and southern Indiana from 1816 to 1830.  Mr. Bartelt will discuss his book, read excerpts, discuss Lincoln and answer audience questions.

Bill Bartelt, a native of Holland, Indiana, resides in Newburgh Indiana.  He taught social studies at Evansville's Harrison High School for 37 years and was the social studies and fine arts department chair at the school when he retired in 2005.  For over 15 summers he was employed as a ranger and historian at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial.  He is considered a local Lincoln authority.

For more information, please contact Lisa Ashby Goff, at 812-853-5627.

Warrick County Bicentennial

The statute that recognized the creation of WarrickCounty was enacted by the Indiana Territorial Legislation and became effective on April 1, 1813, a full decade after John Sprinkle became the first white settler in the area when he landed at Newburgh in 1803.   WarrickCounty was carved out of the original Knox County, and was named after a close friend of General William H. Harrison, Capt. Jacob Warrick, who died during the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.

In commemoration of the Bicentennial of Warrick County, a group of representatives from the Newburgh Museum Foundation, Historic Newburgh, Inc., the Coal Mine Museum and the Warrick County Museum have formed a Steering Committee and plans are now underway for festivities throughout 2013 to celebrate the founding of Warrick County.

Our first Bicentennial event - April 7th at 2pm

Preservation Hall and hosted by the Newburgh Museum.

Dr. Jim Madison from Indiana University - free public lecture on "Life in Indiana in 1813"

This will be our Bicentennial Kickoff Event and will include an opportunity to visit the Newburgh Museum before and after the presentation.

Quilters Unite for Warrick County

quilters

Help us create a Warrick County Bicentennial Quilt

to be shared by our community organizations.

Here is a project you can really feel good about. Betty Cummings from the Village Mercantile, located on the westside of the square in Boonville, has volunteered to take the donated quilt squares and finish them into a wall hanging or quilt. You can be a part of history. Any design is welcome,  erson, an animal, a building, a place, a date or a childhood memory. You be creative.

All year we will be selling tickets to a drawing with the winner being announced at the end of 2013. Proceeds will be split between Coal Mine Museum, the Warrick County Museum and the Newburgh Museum.

Requirements

12" block finished on 100% cotton fabric

Any technique can be used - it can be pieced, appliqued, embroidered, or colored with crayon or fabric paint

How to be involved

Contact Betty Cummings at 897-5687 or at villagmerc@aol.com and let her know the theme of your block. Have the block to Betty by April 1st so that the quilt can be assembled in time for the Warrick County Fair. The finished quilt will be displayed at various Bicentennial events.
