In a recent announcement, Microsoft stated that support of all Internet Explorer versions below 11 will no longer be supported or patched, EFFECTIVE JANUARY 12, 2016. This means that anyone using Internet Explorer versions 7 through 10 will become more and more vulnerable to attacks. What does this mean for you?
As the IT decision maker of your company, you must decide usability over security.
- Some websites your company uses might not be ready for IE 11, causing loss in production
- Default Security setting in IE lock down users
- Some Internet Explorer settings by default block applications, ActiveX, Java
- Users might not have security rights to change settings
- Users might not understand which settings to change and therefore must open tickets
- Users may change settings that they may not understand and make their machine vulnerable to attacks
What are the options?
- Do not upgrade and depend on your firewall/UTM device to protect the environment
- Upgrade to IE 11 at a scheduled date via CCC managed services patching policy, thus resolving all end user issues (applies to ConvergeSecureŽ Managed IT Services customers only)
- Engage CCC (for a flat fee*) to build you a custom group policy for IE11, roll out settings to a single user as a test and then roll out settings for all users
*The flat fee assumes your environment meets the requirements below. If not, then a scope can be developed and presented specific to your environment and needs.
Requirements for Custom Group Policy?
- All your domain controllers need to be running Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, or 2012 R2
- All your computers must be Windows 7, 8.1, or 10*
*CCC does NOT recommend upgrading to Windows 10 for at least another three months. At that time we will re-assess software development and compatibility.
