Ask the Expert: Getting Back to the Windows "Start" Menu
Danny Poull, Senior ConvergeSecure® Engineer
With newer Windows operating systems coming out the screen, interface, and user personalization settings are changing. Instead of Classic Windows start menu's, you have a "metro" like interface, with random tiles and sections all over the place. Pictured below is how Windows 8, 8.1, Server 2012, and 2012 R2 operate by default. For a savvy user, they can right click and pin (or unpin) to start menu. | Windows 8.1 |
For less tech savvy users, or to unify this for a terminal server, it can be challenging to get the start menu setup the way you want. Below are the steps I will go through in explaining how to create a start menu for newer windows OS. If you want to change the start menu to classic you can always to do so, but that is not the intent of the article. Read more...

CCC Announces New Rates for 2015
In an effort to remain financially balanced and technically proficient, CCC Technologies will increase our hourly labor rates for the first time in fourteen years. Since 2001, CCC Technologies has continually adjusted and absorbed the financial burden of maintaining a staff of highly skilled and certified engineers, which includes growing compensation packages and merit increases based on performance and certification level. The increase of hourly labor rates across all Engineering/Resource tiers will take effect January 1, 2015. Please note that these rate increases will not impact existing managed services/support/maintenance agreements or existing block-of-hour contracts. The new rates will be billed for:
- MAC (Move/Add/Change) work,
- Projects
- Time and Materials (T&M) requests
- Afterhours/Weekend/Holiday support
- Any work/support that falls outside of ConvergeSecure® or ConvergeAssure® agreement parameters
In order to maintain and exceed our goal of being one of the largest customer-centric UC/Voice and IT Managed Services providers in the area we must continue to invest in our most valuable resource, our 27 industry certified engineers. However, in doing so we must also maintain a level of fiscal responsibility in order to continue to cultivate the great partnerships we have built over our 30 years in business. If you should have any questions or concerns, please call Jim Poull at 847.427.2346 or Juan Rodriguez at 847.427.2377 at your earliest convenience.

How to Get More Out of Your Virtualized and Cloud Environments
By: Brandon Butler, Network World for CIO.com, Dec 1, 2014
After Dammions Darden arrived as the new senior systems administrator for the city of Garland, Texas, he knew that the 50 to 60 physical hosts for this 234,000-person city outside of Dallas were not running nearly as efficiently as they could be. Some had excess capacity, others were running way too hot.
Traditionally if apps are slow and virtual machines need more memory the easy answer is an unfortunate one: Throw more hardware at the problem. But Darden wasn't satisfied with that. While roaming the expo floor at VMworld two years ago he stumbled across VMTurbo, a company that specializes in analyzing virtual environments.
Using VMTurbo to gain insight into what was happening in the virtual realm, the city of Garland found it could ratchet up the VM load on some machines dramatically, going from 20 to 25 VMs per host to 40 to 45 on some servers. That consolidation freed up hosts that could be used to support other initiatives. The city, for example, was considering a virtual desktop environment but was worried about hardware costs, and suddenly Darden had servers to host the deployment.
It's a lot easier to just keep adding hardware, but there's a better way, Darden says.
